Not Putney’s normally superb writing
Revisado: 10-26-24
Most of the book is in a wartime setting, with the anxiety & violence permeating such contexts. Not a setting I enjoy when seeking relaxation. The plodding, not particularly interesting story, made it worse. Not worth the time or expense. Hard to identify any other Putney book that i have returned.

Weak
Revisado: 02-11-24
Cathy Maxwell is capable of outstanding novels with original, captivating story lines. This one was relatively weak & overly predictable. More a short story or novella than a novel. Mary J Wells turned in a quality performance with easy to distinguish voices for each character.

Fabulous!
Revisado: 11-10-22
Superb continuation of the Wallflowers & Ravenels saga, with a few new characters. Phoebe’s best friend, Merritt, meets a challenging Scot who ultimately wins her.
Many surprises in the plot & lovely times with old friends Evie, Sebastian, and many others.
Mary Jane Wells delivers a first rate performance with all characters’ voices & personalities exceptionally well wrought. Another great pairing of Kleypas & Wells.

Not nearly Putney’s best
Revisado: 10-23-22
I loved all of Putney’s books before encountering this one- adored both print & audio. And I thought 16 hours of a Putney book would be a rare treasure. But this book was not well edited. The story dragged significantly over the first half and then the end was close to dropping off a cliff. I stayed with it until the end but often did not look forward to listening to it. It’s print copyright was 1990, so does not reflect Putney’s talents as her considerable writing skills developed.

Maxwell & Wells team better in other books
Revisado: 09-29-22
Self-absorbed Tara was annoyingly egotistical in earlier books but she's the star here. We obtain a more sympathetic view of her as she matures and marries. But the annoying voice she was given in earlier tomes is a bit much here. Mary Jane Wells is normally my favorite narrator in period stories, but here Tara brings down the overall enjoyment of the book. Is it possible to have an annoying character, whose voice is originally reflective of her deeper problematic character, mature in her voice as well, to reflect her inner growth? That might help!

A reissued book- with Audible not flagging it
Revisado: 09-29-22
For yet another time, Audible did not note that this book was already in my library. It was reissued with a new cover & perhaps some other changes but Audible did not disclose these points & allow the customer to decide whether to repurchase the book at full price. Author should insist that Audible stop these deceptive sales practices. Otherwise, I liked the book when first read & recommend it.

Historia
Augusta Ballinger was quite sure that it was all a dreadful mistake. The chillingly pompous and dangerously disturbing Earl of Graystone could not possibly wish to marry her. Why, it was rumored that his chosen bride must be a veritable model of virtue. And everyone knew that Augusta, as the last of the wild, reckless Northumberland Ballingers, was a woman who could not be bothered by society's rules.

Revisado: 09-29-22
One of my favorite Amanda Quick books, I was hopeful the audio version would be top notch. Flosnik (narrator) is good on many books but doesn’t bring off the wit and personalities of the characters here.

Such a delight!
Revisado: 03-13-22
Perfectly plotted story of Ethan Ransom’s courtship of the prickly doctor Gibson who had saved Pandora Ravenel’s life. I love the manner Lisa Kleypas handles intrigue, suspense & violence: she avoids graphic details that cause me to avoid other books & writers but skillfully paints the scenes nonetheless so the reader is immersed but not deprived of of sleep when bedtime arrives. (Thanks!)
Mary Jane Wells complements Kleypas’s superb writing with vigorous & memorable renderings of the characters’ personalities. This combination of author & performer is a stroke of genius & a thorough delight! The entire Ravenel series is a phenom.

Medical details & violence too gory for me
Revisado: 11-19-21
This is a beautifully written book and Mary Jane Wells turns in an excellent performance. Normally I read novels at night, so don't have much tolerance for detailed autopsies and vigorous descriptions of criminal violence against good people just before I go to sleep.
The tension and threat of violence is well-wrought. But its very success on those points means it's not a book I can read/listen to at night before bed. So I am returning. For those with tougher skins or who read at other times of day, it's quite a good romantic mystery.
