Historia
On the world called Hyperion, beyond the law of the Hegemony of Man, there waits the creature called the Shrike. There are those who worship it. There are those who fear it. And there are those who have vowed to destroy it. In the Valley of the Time Tombs, where huge, brooding structures move backward through time, the Shrike waits for them all.

Quite good
Revisado: 09-20-19
It really is Canterbury Tales in space. All of the stories are pretty good, some obviously better than others. Each of the characters had a good deal of depth and their individual performers did a great job. The universe at large was richly imaginative and frequently introduces new and interesting concepts. The only flaw is that the book really front-loaded the best stories and the last two were pretty mediocre by comparison. Also, the story just kinda ends, clearly to be finished in the sequel. Still, very enjoyable overall.

Historia
Morrigan Crow is cursed. Having been born on Eventide, the unluckiest day for any child to be born, she's blamed for all local misfortunes, from hailstorms to heart attacks - and, worst of all, the curse means that Morrigan is doomed to die at midnight on her 11th birthday. But as Morrigan awaits her fate, a strange and remarkable man named Jupiter North appears. Chased by black-smoke hounds and shadowy hunters on horseback, he whisks her away into the safety of a secret, magical city called Nevermoor.

Promising start
Revisado: 06-16-19
Really enjoyed this one, got some definite Harry Potter vibes but it brought over a good number of unique spins. The only downside was the way some of the characters were voiced. The antagonists especially got very irritating after a while, the worst offender was over-the-top valley-girl voice of one of the main character's rivals. Overall, liked the story and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

Decent story stretched far too long
Revisado: 06-09-19
Man there is a TON of padding in the last third of the book. Content about the dog and the Outsider was interesting but it felt like the conflict between the two was a minor part of the story. Also, the main characters (who are on the run from the law in the latter half of the book) meet up with all-too-convenient supporting characters who are willing to do anything and everything to assist them during their time of need. Also, as others have mentioned, there is a side-plot involving a serial killer/hitman that was completely redundant. It was simply another threat chasing down the main characters and offered no unique contributions to the story. With all of this unnecessary content, I was glad to finally finish the book.

Well worth it
Revisado: 04-28-19
Great suspense story, mysteries and revelations are given at a good pace. The conclusion was certainly unexpected without being totally outlandish. Definitely piqued my interest for the other books in the series. My only criticism is that one of the larger side stories didn't really tie in that much with the main plot and felt unnecessary.

Lovecraft in name only
Revisado: 03-13-19
Generic post-apocalyptic sci-fi story, but with some Lovecraft references sprinkled in. Characters spend a great deal of time discussing previous events that seem much more interesting than what's going on in the present story.

Nothing of value
Revisado: 01-18-19
Only listened to the first few lectures. The goal of these lectures is to promote positive changes to behaviors and thinking patterns in common, everyday situations. The main issue with these lectures is that it greatly implies that most behaviors are influenced by one main factor; this is NEVER the case. He also fails to present potential downsides to his recommendations. An early example is when he recommended ways of increasing motivation. He recommends to immediately tackle the most difficult task first before moving on to easier ones. His reasoning is that if you accomplish smaller tasks first you won't have enough energy left when it comes time to complete the more difficult task. There is some truth to this, but it is also true that immediately trying to do something very difficult without gradual steps towards it can GREATLY increase that chance that you will give up altogether.
The other issue is that the supportive research studies he described were dubious at best. No mention of how many participants were in the study, when it was conducted, or how many trials were involved. Instead, he spends most of his time repeating the same poorly-supported conclusions over and over again.

Historia
An 11-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

A ton of nothing
Revisado: 11-29-18
I've read quite a few Stephen King books in the past. For the most part, I believe he tells some good stories....eventually. With Outsider, it feels like King has become a parody of himself. The dialogue was the worst offender. Everyone is absurdly long-winded at all times. The police interviews were especially bad; every interviewee would go off on 5 different tangents that have absolutely nothing to do with the investigation. This completely broke my immersion, I have a very difficult time believing that anyone would talk like that given the circumstances. Maybe the story eventually picks up, but I have no interest in finding out one way or the other.

Okay at first
Revisado: 09-25-17
Started off great, then about half way through there was very little story to speak of. Sure, events occurred, but it wasn't really a cohesive plot.
