Historia
Charlie knows he’s not the main character in his own story. He’s just another schmuck in the Ivy League looking to be somebody. He plays in a terrible jazz band, falls in love too easily, and struggles with the human being business. Written in a wry, comedic style, A Comedy of Nobodies: A Collection of Stories traces one fall semester in the lives of four typical but unforgettable university students who, as compensation for their existential anxieties, just want to feel understood.

So well written. So sweet and melancholic.
Revisado: 06-14-24
Fantastic writing. Melancholic and witty. Beautiful and reflective. He is fully aware of his own mortality and the fleeting of every moment.
There is an expiration date to all of this. I don’t have to tell you that none of us is permanent. We’re just passing through. Here and gone and then somewhere else.
The world is just a rental.

Historia
In the late 1930s, 16-year-old Billy Parham captures a she-wolf that has been marauding his family's ranch. But instead of killing it, he decides to take it back to the mountains of Mexico. With that crossing he begins an arduous and often dreamlike journey into a country where men meet ghosts and violence strikes as suddenly as heat lightning - a world where there is no order "save that which death has put there".

Rough and raw told with beauty and breadth. He is a master and this collection of unyielding dives into existence and strife and struggle is one I will return to again and again.

Historia
Based on Cartarescu's own role as a high school teacher, Solenoid begins with the mundane details of a diarist's life and quickly spirals into a philosophical account of life, history, philosophy, and mathematics. One character asks another: when you rush into the burning building, will you save the newborn or the artwork? On a broad scale, the novel's investigations of other universes, dimensions, and timelines reconcile the realms of life and art.

Dancing and lights. Beautiful and brilliant. Some of the brightest flashes of brilliance and introspection. A blending of dream, philosophy, existential and self awareness. Our beautiful irrelevance. How melancholic.

Author of the National Book Award-winning All the Pretty Horses, Cormac McCarthy is one of the most provocative American stylists to emerge in the last century. The striking novel Blood Meridian offers an unflinching narrative of the brutality that accompanied the push west on the 1850s Texas frontier.

Historia
A lowly government clerk, Akay Akakiyevich, must scrimp and save to purchase a new coat for the cold Russian winter in “The Overcoat”. But after one night of basking in the warmth of his new coat and the respect of his colleagues, Akaky’s one-of-a-kind overcoat is stolen. In his pursuit of justice, Akaky receives no help and is consumed by the loss of his prized possession. In “The Viy”, Gogol recounts a popular folk story in which a monstrous creature, known to Little Russia as the king of gnomes, helps a witch get revenge on a young student who escaped from her trap.

Historia
Hailed as one of the world’s masterpieces of psychological realism, The Death of Ivan Ilyich is the story of a worldly careerist, a high-court judge who has never given the inevitability of his death so much as a passing thought. But one day death announces itself to him, and to his shocked surprise he is brought face-to-face with his own mortality. How, Tolstoy asks, does an unreflective man confront his one and only moment of truth?

No one dies with dignity
Revisado: 03-23-23
I’ve not read this book for one reason or another. It might be that I had an unjustified air about Tolstoy. But this is beautiful, suffering humanity. It’s a book I believe everyone should read, in order to better understand our own journey and have empathy for other’s journeys. If it all for naught, shouldn’t we make the most of it?

Historia
One of the world’s greatest novelists, Leo Tolstoy was also the author of a number of superb short stories, one of his best known being “The Kreutzer Sonata.” This macabre story involves the murder of a wife by her husband. It is a penetrating study of jealousy as well as a piercing complaint about the way in which society educates men and women in matters of sex - a serious condemnation of the mores and attitudes of the wealthy, educated class.

How relevant and horrible. How well does Tolstoy understand what we all have understood at one point or another. The overwhelming insanity of jealousy and rage. The narrator was perfect.

Hypocritical bias
Revisado: 03-20-23
I agree whole heartedly that the assumptions that seem to be set in stone by the “historical” and “archeological” communities concerning the rise of cities from the advent of agriculture need more skepticism when analyzing. However, these two are not only questioning, they are unabashedly smearing other’s work. Insinuating that their conclusions don’t lack any evidence or that the gaps are too warily being filled in. Meanwhile, these two do the exact same thing.
They nit pick through evidence and then apply their own conclusions and fill in their own gaps. However, they don’t use the evidence to allow themselves guided to a solution. They, instead, have a solution (bias, ideological belief) already and use that evidence to manipulate it into their own solution. This book is hypocritical in its analysis and biased in its proposals.
I have no doubt they are wise in their field, but they should stick to digging in the dirt and not step into economics, philosophy and sociology.

Historia
An ordinary family man, geologist, and Mormon, Soren Johansson has always believed he'll be reunited with his loved ones after death in an eternal hereafter. Then, he dies. Soren wakes to find himself cast by a God he has never heard of into a Hell whose dimensions he can barely grasp: a vast library he can only escape from by finding the book that contains the story of his life. In this haunting existential novella, author, philosopher, and ecologist Steven L. Peck explores a subversive vision of eternity.

Borges, Kafka… beautiful
Revisado: 03-17-23
A gem of metaphysical beauty. It lies somewhere between Borges’ prose and imaginations of immortals and never ending libraries and Kafka’s blunt absolutes of this absurd existence. I adored this book.

Dee Brown's eloquent, meticulously documented account of the systematic destruction of the American Indian during the second half of the 19th century uses council records, autobiographies, and firsthand descriptions. Brown allows great chiefs and warriors of the Dakota, Ute, Sioux, Cheyenne, and other tribes to tell us in their own words of the battles, massacres, and broken treaties that finally left them demoralized and defeated.
