The computer generated audio was very distracting and often with inappropriate intonation and pronunciation. The characters were poorly developed and the timeframe of the books were difficult to discern. The main character presented as a pulp fiction character like Alan Quartermain or Doc Savage. I couldn't relate to him as he presented as a character out of time in the presented framework.

Please stop with the accents
Revisado: 10-15-24
The story, while begging belief, has been enjoyable. However, the narrator has the worst American accents ever attempted for his cast of characters. They are so poor they border on insulting and are very distracting from what would otherwise be an entertaining yarn.

Robert Pendleton is a chemical genius with a fertilizer worth a fortune to whoever controls the formula. Not surprisingly, the Bank, his notoriously exclusive backer, wants to keep an eye on its investment. But so does the CIA. And the Chinese government. And a few shadier organizations. So when Pendleton disappears from a conference in San Francisco, along with all of his research, Neal Carey enters the picture.

Don Winslow went to China and wrote this book as a tax write off
Revisado: 05-23-24
Historic and cultural references were too deep and. character development was way too shallow. Main character fell in love with a woman he met for 5 minutes, drops everything and chases her to the other side of the world. Attempts to be romantic, but comes off as immature because the author spent all of 30 seconds on Neil/Neal falling head over heels in love with a woman he has shared all of 10 sentences with. I'm halfway through this price of trash and the plot so far is main character sees a hot girl, "falls in love", stalks her to another continent where she says leave me alone. He doesn't get the hint and the gets his feelings hurt when she tries to kill him because he can't understand why a woman he met once and shared a very brief conversation with doesn't love him back and wants his crazy/toxic persona away from her. To be honest, most of the story was just disappointing frosting on a poorly written and plainly boring travelogue that made up the rest of this cake. I might not finished this book and definitely won't read the rest of this series. save yourself time and money and avoid this. I'm sure the only reason it was written was so Don Winslow would write off a vacation to Hong Kong and China in his taxes.

Tropish
Revisado: 12-26-23
I could not finish the book. The MC was such an insecure, "alpha"/toxic male that I could not find any way to empathized and there for connect with him. I didn't complete the story, but it was pretty obvious the only female character in the story was going to fall for his AH charm and have a brief but passionate love affair. This would be in spite of him being a narcissistic, racist sociopath who refuses to take responsibility for his role in his sister's death and instead blamed everyone else for ruining his life at it's prime. Pass on this one, it reads like an 80's action movie that would star Michael Dudikoff...

The sound engineer and narrator were awful.
Revisado: 03-24-22
I could only attend to ~50% of the story because the sound engineering was so bad and the narrator sounded as if he was running out of air at the end of his proclamations. The narrator would begin audibly, but as he expounded, his volume would drop to a whisper, forcing the listener to raise the volume to hear him. Just as you did that, his volume would increase to normal again and it would sound as if he was screaming. Additionally, he would vacillate between a high tenor and a bassy whisper in conversations between characters forcing you to choose between turning up the volume and bursting your eardrums to hear the whole conversation or keeping the volume level and missing half of the story. I opted to leave the volume level as I had anticipated the story half way through the narration and it was quite poor. Give this book a miss, you mind and ears will thank you for it.

Frustratingly bad
Revisado: 07-05-21
Got this as a vacation book for the flights. It was aweful. There were inconsistencies and story holes all over the book. The writer was obviously oblivious to even basic American laws (convicted felons not being able to own or possess arms, would have been an immediate charge for the protagonist). The high school level love affair that felt forced into the novel just to increase page numbers was a painful read. The grandfather that allowed his son to be killed and then nearly allowed his grandson to be killed as well was completely unbelievable. Not to mention him being able to speak post being shot in the throat. None of the characters were lileable or even relatable. The dialog reads like an old Cannon script. And the "twist" at the end? -> I haven't even finished this book yet, but I know exactly where the money is.

Historia
Nathan Stone was killed in action while serving as a covert CIA operative. Or so everyone thought. In reality he’s become a ghost, a black-ops asset with a new identity and controlled by a secret government organization. The Commission has one aim: to hunt down and assassinate anti-establishment enemies of the state. Its number-one target is Senator Brad Crichton, an ambitious politician with growing support. Stone is ready to take him out, but his plan is soon compromised....

No redemption
Revisado: 03-21-19
I find that most of his main characters have anger issues and rather severe personality disorders, but Nathan Stone is just awful. He's an absolute sociopath with a very poorly written history. Other reviews have compared him to Jason Bourne, he presents my like Jason Voorhees. This was a book with exactly one potentially likeable character and the pro/antagonist killed him to steal his vehicle and further his agenda. The only reason I finished the book was because I was hoping the main character would die in the end, thus redeeming the novel. In retrospect, I remember having the same hope for Reznik (one of the authors other characters in another series) as well. I would skip this book and this author overall. There are much better writers and characters in the genre that engage the listeners/readers instead of disgusting them. TLDR: Terrible read/listen, I felt filthy when I finished it.
