Not Garth Nixs is best, but not his worse either
Revisado: 04-21-25
Reasonable story. The characters were a little bit, annoying, and to some extent it was a bit formula. On the other hand, it’s much more straightforward without the unusual gender relations of some of his newer books.
I still prefer the old kingdom

Historia
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

A compelling and interesting story
Revisado: 11-23-24
The first book I’ve read on Fort Sumter in the beginning of the war. I found it compelling and found the first person accounts very interesting. However, I still feel that contemporary historical versions of why the war was fought and what the southerners were fighting for, has pendulum from southern honor to it’s all about slavery. The truth, I still feel is somewhere in between. In this case, the authors use of Edward Ruffin and Mary Chestnut, tend to in advertently paint most if not all southerners with the brush of despicable racism. I wish he had elaborated more on the point of view of those people who we’re not so easily despised, such as Robert E Lee
One aspect I did appreciate was his discussion of Edward Stanton whose conduct towards General Sherman at the end of the war is abominable
I also enjoyed the discussion of why James Buchanan is clearly the worst president we have ever had.

Revisado: 09-23-24
I continue to enjoy these stories. This particular one was very fascinating, particularly in the concept of what would’ve happened if society had rejected the choice of the dark one.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

J.R.R. Tolkien famously described the Second Age of Middle-earth as a ‘dark age, and not very much of its history is (or need be) told’. And for many years readers would need to be content with the tantalizing glimpses of it found within the pages of The Lord of the Rings and its appendices, including the forging of the Rings of Power, the building of the Barad-dûr and the rise of Sauron.

A good book for diehard Tolkien fans
Revisado: 01-26-23
I am an intense Tolkien fan. I found this one very interesting, although the first part of it was hard to get through because it was honestly a little dry. Once I got used to the fact that they would be constantly interrupting the story with commentary it worked. It worked even better once it got past, describing the flora and fauna of Numenor and getting to the actual story.

General Sherman's 1864 burning of Atlanta solidified his legacy as a ruthless leader. Yet Sherman proved far more complex than his legendary military tactics reveal. James Lee McDonough offers fresh insight into a man tormented by the fear that history would pass him by, who was plagued by personal debts, and who lived much of his life separated from his family.

Excellent biography of general Sherman which I enjoyed it very much
Revisado: 11-19-22
I have never known a lot about general Sherman. I had heard he was a Civil War general, and everybody had heard about Shermans march to the sea. Not surprisingly, he was a much more complicated figure.
The most important post he ever had, was being quartermaster. It was his ability to manage logistics which made him such a successful general. This is not to be emphasized his strategic abilities he developed at West Point. However What really made his accomplishments most meaningful was his ability to move a very large army through the countryside without a supply train in tow. This was the reason for his success at Chattanooga, Atlanta, across Georgia to Savannah, and into south and North Carolina
I appreciate how the author gave a full picture of him warts and all if you will. he was an excellent general and a very good friend, but a bitter enemy and had some opinions that are probably not politically correct at this point. For those who will despise him because of this, my response is that it’s important to look at historical figures in the world they lived in not to judge them by today’s standards which would’ve been so foreign to them that they probably wouldn’t of even comprehend them. Certainly his opinions towards both African-Americans and Indians is not acceptable by today’s standards. However they largely reflected the opinions that the majority of people had at that time. Furthermore, it should be remembered that many of the freedoms enjoyed now are the result of actions by general Sherman. While it is probably not correct to say that without general Sherman the north would not have won the Civil War, the loss of him and several other key generals very well could make that a reality.
It is a bit of a slow read at the beginning, and really didn’t get particularly interesting until he got to West Point and particularly after Gila left West Point. I had never known that he left the army for a time. I also did not know that he had spent his early army years both in the south and in San Francisco. While I disagree with his opinions on a number of things, including that of religion and of the desirability of living in the southwest, I known the less respect him for all that he did and all that he was.

Historia
In the opening volume of his acclaimed American Revolution series, Nathaniel Philbrick turns his keen eye to pre-Revolutionary Boston and the spark that ignited the American Revolution. In the aftermath of the Boston Tea Party and the violence at Lexington and Concord, the conflict escalated and skirmishes gave way to outright war in the Battle of Bunker Hill. It was the bloodiest conflict of the revolutionary war, and the point of no return for the rebellious colonists.

Good but not Philbricks best
Revisado: 05-14-22
I’ve previously listen to several Mr. Philbrocks books, so I anticipated another well-than story. But to Lord Voldemort, “I find myself disappointed.“ The story at times dragged, and I feel that he could’ve pulled it with fewer words and fewer chapters.
He seemed bent on unmasking and revealing many of the characters is less than worthy and flawed, which is common in historical novels, but he seem to take to an extreme with this particular book. He particularly seem to enjoy depicting the early revolutionaries as uncouth and civilized cruel ununited and generally reprehensible. Granted he didn’t depict the Tories in British in any better of a light, but at the end of it it just seems like he was disparaging everyone. It’s not that I think that they were perfect people, in fact I’m sure that they weren’t. But sometimes the negativity got extreme.
By the end of the book, I was ready to be done and not inclined to read another one of his books, which is unfortunate because it was reading one of his previous works that made me decide to buy this one
