Acerca de esta escucha

The best-selling author of In the Heart of the Sea, Mayflower, and In the Hurricane's Eye tells the story of the Boston battle that ignited the American Revolution, in this "masterpiece of narrative and perspective" (Boston Globe).

In the opening volume of his acclaimed American Revolution series, Nathaniel Philbrick turns his keen eye to pre-Revolutionary Boston and the spark that ignited the American Revolution. In the aftermath of the Boston Tea Party and the violence at Lexington and Concord, the conflict escalated and skirmishes gave way to outright war in the Battle of Bunker Hill. It was the bloodiest conflict of the revolutionary war, and the point of no return for the rebellious colonists. Philbrick gives us a fresh view of the story and its dynamic personalities, including John Adams, Samuel Adams, John Hancock, Paul Revere, and George Washington. With passion and insight, he reconstructs the revolutionary landscape - geographic and ideological - in a mesmerizing narrative of the robust, messy, blisteringly real origins of America.

Living within an hour of Bunker and Breed's Hills, this story resonated with me perhaps a bit more than most. In these times, being aware of our country's history-the sacrifices and noble goals which shaped it from its onset-is something every school child should intimately know. I found it refreshing to revisit my local-and our early history-once again.

Should be required reading...

The birth of the rebellion in Boston, thru Lexington & Concord & the full siege of Boston is glossed over in much of the history of the Revolution. This well done piece adds many "never taught in school" aspects we all should know.

A great work to cover a rarely recorded time

Narrator had strange tone and mispronounced many New England place names. Writing is excellent however, so still worth a listen

Great book, poorly read

The most exactingly researched and detailed account of the British occupation of Boston and its eventual forced evacuation. Even I, Boston born and raised, and a lover of history am humbled at the vast, untold story this book chronicles. If you love history. If you crave documented facts. This is your welcomed account of how we actually became a free and independent country. This is the unfiltered truth of the simple people who challenged the greatest power on Earth and won. Not by their strength, or military wisdom. But by a simple conviction of what is just and right and for which it is worth sacrificing everything.

Birth of Liberty, in stark detail. Not your father's history book.

Driving the narrative of Bunker Hill forward for its first three-quarters is the story of General (Dr) Joseph Warren. Having read biographies of other New England patriots, I was surprised to find how little I knew of this great character. Nathaniel Philbrick does an excellent job bring all the characters to life but in choosing a lesser discussed he allows the read to explore the story anew.

The book sets the context of the state of rebellion and takes us to the eventual evacuation of the British Regulars from Boston. I found it rounded out my knowledge of a topic I thought I knew a bit about.

Highly recommend the book. I found the narrator took a bit of getting use to though.
