Great book
Revisado: 01-22-23
I really loved this book. Great characters and storyline. I feel I also learned more about the American War of Independence and the Charleston area. Great performance as well. I was surprised, at the end, to learn it was written in 1959. There was little in it that denoted anachronistic sensibilities.

Assuming their roles as the new Lord and Lady Kenefick and returning to Robinswood with the plan to drag it back from the brink of dereliction is taking its toll on Kate and Sam. With a young family to raise, a very limited budget, and only Kate’s parents to help, the task seems insurmountable.

Historia
Robinswood, Co. Waterford, 1939. The once grand house is home to two very different families. Despite delusions of grandeur, Lord and Lady Kenefick and their adult children live a life of decayed opulence as the money needed to keep such a large house and grounds ever dwindles. Meanwhile, the Murphy family, Dermot, Isabella and their three almost grown-up girls, live and work on the estate and do their best to keep everything running smoothly.

I had never read any Jean Grainger before, but as she was compared to Maeve Binchy, whom I love, I thought I would try this book which was on sale on Audible. Although I wasn’t sure for the first few minutes, I quickly become absorbed in the story and the characters. Great performance on the part of the narrator, who manages the different voices and accents very well. It’s well worth a listen and I am now moving on to the second book in the series. I feel as if I’ve discovered a wonderful “new to me” author.

Great story and characters woven together masterfully by Quinn. Great narration as well although some foreign language pronunciations were off, but not distractingly so. I loved Quinn’s Empress of Rome series and I look forward to reading more of this author. Highly recommended.

I really enjoyed every aspect of this book. It’s a world I know very little about. The author wove the pieces of the story together extremely well. It took me a while to warm up to the reader, but I ended up enjoying her performance very much. I recommend this book.

In this intimate, haunting, literary memoir read by the author, an American icon tells her story for the first time, in her own gorgeous words - about a challenging and lonely childhood, the craft that helped her find her voice, and a powerful emotional legacy that shaped her journey as a daughter and a mother.

I have always enjoyed reading (or listening to) the memoirs of people in “show business.” This book is more than just reminiscences about her career, but a deeply insightful book about Sally Field’s lifelong emotional development. It is beautifully performed and deeply moving. Well worth a listen.

I really enjoyed this book, and Julia Whelan’s performance! It is a book that will make you feel what is was like to live in Depression era America as you root for the protagonists. It is not necessarily a “feel good” book, but I found the ending satisfying.

Never really grabbed me.
Revisado: 10-26-20
This is a period of history that interests me a lot and I have read quite a lot of historical fiction. This book failed to pull me in, in part due to the monotonous voice of the narrator, who failed to create any sense if suspense or adventure or to use different voices for the characters except those with non-English accents. Her Scottish accent was terrible. At one point I checked to see if this was not the first book in the series as it seemed to presuppose some knowledge of the characters and circumstances. But it IS the first book. The situation and characters were not presented well at the beginning. Thus, I really did not care that much about our heroine or her issues. The most vivid characters were the heroine’s dogs. Some of the action scenes close to the end were fairly suspenseful, but otherwise, not so much. I would not listen to another book narrated by Sarah Nichols. At some point I might read, rather than listen to, the next book in the series to see if my perceptions are actually due to the lacklustre narration. But I’m not in a rush yo do so, despite the first book having set the scene for book two in its final chapter.
