A bustling port city, Charleston, South Carolina, is the crossroads of the American Revolution, where supplies and weapons for the rebel army must be unloaded and smuggled north. From the window of the dressmaker's shop where she works, lovely Celia Garth, recently engaged to the heir to a magnificent plantation, watches all of this thrilling activity.
When the unthinkable occurs and the British capture and occupy Charleston, bringing fiery retribution to the surrounding countryside, Celia sees her world destroyed. The rebel cause seems lost until the Swamp Fox, American general Francis Marion, takes the fight to the British - and one of his daring young soldiers recruits Celia to spy on the rebels' behalf.
Out of the ashes of Charleston and the Carolina countryside will rise a new nation - and a love that will change Celia Garth forever in this historical romance hailed by the Chicago Tribune as "an exciting tale of love and war in the tradition of Gone with the Wind".

The author went to college in Alabama, studied journalism for a year at Columbia in NYC then moved to New Orleans, where her parents had moved, and got a job with the Times Picayune as a reporter. There she met her husband and together they wrote several books which did well, one even being made into a movie, but the depression hit and times were tough. But then Hollywood came calling and they move west where they got involved in movies, scriptwriting, he in directing and producing, and they both started writing novels in just their own names. This book was written in 1959. I suppose to a certain extent they were Hollywood glitterati.
I'm a bit of an historical history buff and knew the Civil War started with the bombardment of Fort Sumter in Charleston, the setting of most of this book, but never really thought much about its role in the Revolutionary War. It stand to reason Charleston was a major port during the growth of the colonies so when the war broke out there were lots of people that supported the rebels and the new country but many who were still loyal to King George of England. This story is a fictional account of how that played out. The book started several years into the war, going through the Battle of Charleston, which was mainly a six week or so siege, the victory by the British and the aftermath of that victory until the rebels eventually won. It is all told through the eyes of Cilia Garth.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book and how much I enjoyed it.
