Such fun!

Engaging story, interesting characters take turns as storyteller, red herrings, like Midsomer Murders. Leslie Manville is a fantastic narrator. I really enjoyed it. can’t wait to start Book 2 of the series.

Enjoyable, yet too long
Revisado: 07-01-24
Overall, I enjoyed this book. It’s a very tame crime novel with overly emotional characters. The story was a bit all over the place. The narration was great. If it had been 100 pages shorter with less preaching, it would be a solid 4.

Historia
The kingdom of Cornucopia was once the happiest in the world. It had plenty of gold, a king with the finest moustache you could possibly imagine, and butchers, bakers, and cheesemongers whose exquisite foods made a person dance with delight when they ate them. Everything was perfect - except for the misty Marshlands to the north, which, according to legend, were home to the monstrous Ickabog. Anyone sensible knew that the Ickabog was just a myth to scare children into behaving. But the funny thing about myths is that sometimes they take on a life of their own.

Historia
In 1975, a baby just minutes old is taken from its devastated mother. In 2010, the gruesome corpse of a nun is found in a Dublin public park. Detective Inspector Tom Reynolds and his team are on the scene and he’s convinced the murder is linked to historical events that took place in the infamous former Magdalene Laundries, institutions for “fallen women.” As Reynolds and his team follow the trail to an isolated convent, everything seems perfectly normal and it seems perhaps they’ve followed the wrong lead. But it soon becomes disturbingly clear that the killer is amongst them.

Revisado: 02-12-24
I’ll say up front I’m a huge fan of all things Ireland & crime fiction. Jo Spain ticked every box for me. I’m rarely surprised when the killer is revealed, so I was happily surprised at the end. I’ll ride along with Det. Tom Reynolds & team from now on. My 4 stars are for the narrator, he’s perfectly fine & easy to listen to, just not stellar. I’ll listen again.

Historia
Jean McConville's abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.

Historia
Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

The story is good, the narration is not. I’m not sure who decided it should be read by someone with a voice better suited for commercials. I’m just glad it wasn’t any longer.

Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

Disappointing
Revisado: 04-18-21
I had high hopes for this book - 4 & 5 star reviews - Carey Mulligan narrating - even Collin Ferrell in on the production of a possible movie version. I tried, I really did. After the first several chapters I couldn’t have cared less if the library shelves crashed in on everyone. While I didn’t expect literary fiction, I did expect to be required to think. I wish I had paid more attention to the 1 or 2 star reviews. If for some tragic reason a movie version is made I don’t want to know.

My expectations were too high
Revisado: 08-13-20
The Good People is a book worth your time to listen. The story is good, filled with Hannah Kent detail & lovey prose. The narration could not be better. Hearing it made me want to learn to speak Irish Gaelic! The only reason I gave it 3 stars instead of 5 is that I had set my expectations too high.
I absorbed Burial Rites. You know how it is when you are looking for a book & happen onto one that you think will be a nice distraction, instead becoming lost in it. I unintentionally compared The Good People to Burial Rites from the start, which only led to my “meh” attitude.
Give this book a shot, without pre-judgement. I will dive into Hannah Kent’s next book with an open mind.

Fascinating & Insightful
Revisado: 08-08-20
I applaud Mary’s bravery. Her credibility, not only as a PhD, but a Trump family member speaks volumes. She comes from a unique vantage point, giving us critical insights into the dangerous man in charge of our country. I always enjoy when an author reads their own work, this is no exception. She never comes across bitter, this not tabloid fodder. I’m certain she is resentful, but it is not her main focus. Instead she tells her story pragmatically. This book is undoubtedly worth a listen.

Waste of time
Revisado: 03-19-20
This book is a perfect example of why I am often hesitant to try hyped psychological thrillers. The story is predictable, narration annoying - punctuated with drawn out drama and over-explanations. There is a bit of romance, which is unengaging and unnecessary. Long pauses, gasps, and over the top revelations. The main character is supposed to be a professional and behaves like an unstable lunatic. Give me a true psychological thriller with a complex predator any day. Nothing new or remarkable here. I kept thinking this should have been in the YA category. Glad it was free.
