Had to DNF after 3 hrs.
Revisado: 04-04-25
The writing was decent and the performances were fine. But after 3 hours the story hadn’t progressed at all. I still had very few clues as to the point of this book and that is not what I signed up for. The protagonist wasn’t likable enough to compensate for the lack of plot and I grew tired of and ultimately very irritated with how much writing was spent on her outfits and the sound of her laugh.

Suspenseful but too dark
Revisado: 01-22-25
This is my first of Marrs’s books. I found the pacing and writing to be great. I couldn’t put it down. But this book was way too dark for me. Like other reviewers I found the repeated scenes with children to be too heavy. Not sure I’ll be reading any more of this person’s books despite the obvious talent in storytelling.

Historia
After the Renegade mission by the crew of the starship Flying Dutchman, the UN Expeditionary Force thought Earth was safe for hundreds of years, at least. After there was trouble on the home front and the president had to authorize a nuclear strike on an American city, UNEF decided they did need the Merry Band of Pirates again. So, the Flying Dutchman is sent out on a simple recon mission. But for the pirates, nothing is ever simple, and their mission will become Armageddon.

Wow. Edge of my Seat!
Revisado: 05-08-24
For the most part, like every other EF installation, this one had me laughing out loud and totally immersed.
But this is the first one that made me CRY.
Alanson proves that he is not only skilled at writing believably funny characters and dialogue, he is also really good at making you love and grieve for them.
This one is probably my favorite one yet. Moving onto Book 9–full speed ahead!

Historia
After the latest mission of the starship Flying Dutchman, Earth is safe not just for a year, but for hundreds of years. The ship’s weary crew wonders what they will do with their lives in peacetime, but the enemy has other plans, and there is danger on the Homefront. Starring Zachary Quinto, R.C. Bray, Kate Mulgrew, Robert Picardo, and everyone's favorite AI, Skippy the Magnificent, alongside a full cast. Includes plenty of pew-pew-pew, original sound composition, and maybe some singing by R.C. Bray.

Skippy and Joe to the Rescue
Revisado: 05-03-24
Before i get into my review I will say you SHOULD listen to or read this installment. Don’t skip it!
BUT…
All this installment did was prove what a GIANT talent RC Bray (original voice actor for previous books) brings to his performances. With a few exceptions, Bray’s performances of men, women, aliens, and robots were FAR more persuasive than the performances of the cast in this installment. Indeed, I am hopeful that the voice acting of certain beloved characters won’t be permanently stuck in my brain going forward (they were not good).
I will say that the voice actors playing Brock and Nagatha were quite good—Nagatha in particular was “fleshed out” by this performance in a way I really enjoyed. Everyone else did NOT match what Bray’s performance (supplemented by my own imagination) created.
I also found many of the scenes hard to follow—particularly the battle scenes. It felt a lot like trying to watch a movie with just the sound. And not in a good way. The sound effects were ok but also distracting at times (I am sorry but no one can snap ceaselessly for that long—you’ll see what I mean). The background music did little to enhance the drama/suspense in most scenes and was downright inappropriate at some points.
The story, though, is simply unskippable. And Bray’s portrayal of our favorite duo was more than enough to make this installment still enjoyable.

Historia
Before my world came crashing down, I had it all. The successful career I dreamed of. The beautiful red-brick home where I could relax in front of the fire. The handsome, devoted husband whose blue eyes and charming smile always made me feel safe. As I call time of death, my voice is steady. My colleagues stand hushed around me, their eyes on me, confused, concerned.

Narrator is Intolerable
Revisado: 09-19-23
I made it through about 1/3 of the book before quitting. The narration is so awful, I could no longer tolerate it. Between the constant self-centered, repetitious whining by the protagonist and the always “on the brink of tears” reading by the narrator, I found this book to be totally unlistenable. The story seems interesting though so I may just read the rest of it.

Interesting story concept but I couldn’t get past the 1-dimensional characters and unimaginative performance. Stopped after about an hour.

Great writing, decent reading
Revisado: 10-19-20
I really like Ms Brant’s writing and I’m glad she didn’t include so many romance novel scenes in this one.
The reading was decent. Ive gotten accustomed to the reader’s style but two big comments—his female voices make them sound weak and fragile, which is very irritating; and, for the love of all that is holy, forte is pronounced “fore-tay”, NOT FORT.
