Interesting Tidbits of History
Revisado: 05-19-25
Really enjoyed learning things about Paul Revere that I never knew, and what a fantastic American patriot/entrepreneur he was. I felt the Audible performance was a bit lacking, but I can’t quite put my finger on why it sounded a bit flat. Still, it was a nice, interesting little book.

Learned So Much
Revisado: 03-30-25
As we always hear about Pearl Harbor in the United States, I really enjoyed learning what happened in the Philippines to these brave nurses and civilians during World War II. I didn’t feel a close connection with the characters or their dialogue, but the underlying history, and the suffering was a very emotional experience.

Historia
Thomas Jefferson and John Adams could scarcely have come from more different worlds or been more different in temperament. Jefferson, the optimist with enough faith in the innate goodness of his fellow man to be democracy's champion, was an aristocratic Southern slave owner while Adams, the overachiever from New England's rising middling classes, painfully aware he was no aristocrat, was a skeptic about popular rule and a defender of a more elitist view of government.

I had no idea about these two men and their complicated relationship in regards to American history. It was fascinating to learn the differences between them, as well as their common goal to form a sustainable country. Very well done!

Engaging, fascinating story of a real woman who rose to the heights of her career, working for an extremely famous financier, while all the time having to pretend who she was or wasn’t. Couldn’t make it up if you tried.

Historia
The Roman Republic was one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of civilization. After its founding in 509 BCE, the Romans refused to allow a single leader to seize control of the state and grab absolute power. The Roman commitment to cooperative government and peaceful transfers of power was unmatched in the history of the ancient world. But by the year 133 BCE, the republican system was unable to cope with the vast empire Rome now ruled.

"Where you staying?" the Bedouin asked. "Why you not stay with me tonight - in my cave?" Thus begins Marguerite van Geldermalsen's story of how a New Zealand-born nurse came to be married to Mohammad Abdallah Othman, a Bedouin souvenir-seller from the ancient city of Petra in Jordan. It was 1978, and she and a friend were travelling through the Middle East when Marguerite met the charismatic Mohammad who convinced her that he was the man for her.

Disappointing

I felt like I was listening to a travelogue. Although the author tells us she loved her husband, there was so little personal information about their relationship or communication with each other, that I felt no connection to her or her life.

In the 1920s, the richest people per capita in the world were members of the Osage Nation in Oklahoma. After oil was discovered beneath their land, the Osage rode in chauffeured automobiles, built mansions, and sent their children to study in Europe. Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off. As the death toll rose, the newly created FBI took up the case, and the young director, J. Edgar Hoover, turned to a former Texas Ranger named Tom White to try to unravel the mystery.

Loved the Book - Despite the Story
Revisado: 11-02-23
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I knew nothing about these events and found it fascinating - and horrific - the level to which people will stoop for money. And the pain caused in the Osage community by blatant criminals and corrupt government officials is a story that should be told as a part of American history.
I saw some people complained about the narrators, but I don’t know why. I liked that the voices changed and didn’t find them at all distracting.

Historia
Scions of a once-great southern Chinese family that produced the tutor of the last emperor, Jun and Hong were each other’s best friends until, in their twenties, they were separated at the end of the Chinese Civil War. One became a model Communist, the other a model capitalist. On Taiwan, Jun married a Nationalist general, established a trading company, and emigrated to the United States. On the Communist mainland, Hong built her medical career under a cloud of suspicion about her family and survived two waves of “re-education” before she was acclaimed for her achievements.

Historia
First published in 1952, Witness came on the heals of America's trial of the century, in which Whittaker Chambers accused Alger Hiss, a full-standing member of the political establishment, of spying for the Soviet Union. In this penetrating philosophical memoir, Chambers recounts the famous case as well as his own experiences as a Communist agent in the United States, his later renunciation of communism, and his conversion to Christianity.
