Historia
A debut novel already praised as "unbearably poignant and beautifully told" (Eimear McBride), this captivating story follows - over the course of four seasons - a misfit man who adopts a misfit dog. It is springtime, and two outcasts - a man ignored, even shunned by his village, and the one-eyed dog he takes into his quiet, tightly shuttered life - find each other, by accident or fate, and forge an unlikely connection. As their friendship grows, their small seaside town suddenly takes note of them.

You have to listen rather than read: pure poetry
Revisado: 03-21-16
Each sentence reads like a line of poetry. I heard an interview with the author, she describing how each sentence had a rhythm for her. Also, even if you don't love good writing, if you love dogs, you have to listen to this book.

Rodgers and Hart. George and Ira Gershwin. Cole Porter. Lerner and Loewe. For most people who've grown up with and shared America's musical heritage, great songs open the floodgates to memories and feelings. Perhaps nowhere is this more profound than in the world of Broadway musicals, with their iconic melodies and memorable lyrics.Revisit the standards, originally written for the stage, that have both delighted and helped mend the broken hearts of Americans for decades.

Historia
Every economics textbook says the same thing: Money was invented to replace onerous and complicated barter systems - to relieve ancient people from having to haul their goods to market. The problem with this version of history? There’s not a shred of evidence to support it. Here anthropologist David Graeber presents a stunning reversal of conventional wisdom. He shows that for more than 5,000 years, since the beginnings of the first agrarian empires, humans have used elaborate credit systems to buy and sell goods - that is, long before the invention of coins or cash.

Overturning your assumptions about money
Revisado: 06-15-15
Seldom has a book so thoroughly undermined a set of assumptions I had, in this case assumptions about the nature of economic exchange and money that were so ingrained that I never questioned them.

Learning is a lifelong adventure. It starts in your mother's womb, accelerates to high speed in infancy and childhood, and continues through every age. Whether you're actively engaged in mastering a new skill, intuitively discovering an unfamiliar place, or even sleeping-which is fundamental to helping you consolidate and hold on to what you've learned-you are truly born to learn around the clock. But few of us know how we learn, which is the key to learning and studying more effectively.

Awe and exhilaration—along with heartbreak and mordant wit—abound in Lolita, which tells the story of the aging Humbert Humbert's obsession for the nymphet Dolores Haze. Lolita is also the story of a hypercivilized European colliding with the cheerful barbarism of postwar America.

This is an incredible narration of an incredibly well-written book. This is a prose that makes you want to read everything that Nabokov ever wrote, which is exactly what I am undertaking to do.

Historia
Ulysses is regarded by many as the single most important novel of the 20th century. It tells the story of one day in Dublin, June 16th 1904, largely through the eyes of Stephen Dedalus (Joyce's alter ego from Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man) and Leopold Bloom, an advertising salesman. Both begin a normal day, and both set off on a journey around the streets of Dublin, which eventually brings them into contact with one another.

This is a real treat, at least for someone who already has read the book. The reader is superb and quite easy to understand. Some others commented about Irish dialect but I can't remember a single phrase that wasn't crystal clear.

Inspiring even if not what it claims to be
Revisado: 11-14-10
This is a very inspiring account of putting the creation of a classroom community and the building of character first in a way that brings amazing dividends in student growth. The author does not tell you that he is teaching a gifted class of Mexican and Asian immigrants but let's you think that he is dealing with all o the problem that a teacher of inner city youth deals with. Still, I came away with dozens of ideas for my 4th, 5th and 6th classroom by listening to this book.
