Historia
When Brandon Drew issues an edict that his youngest daughter will not be allowed to make her come-out unless her elder sister secures the attentions of a duke, Miss Charlotte Drew is understandably horrified. As a confirmed bluestocking and dedicated spinster, she has neither the charm or the ability to attract the attention of a duke- never mind the inclination. Luckily, help is at hand from Charlotte's friends and fellow wallflowers, and soon she is swanning around London on the arm of the Duke of Penrith. True, he is rude, proud, and terribly toplofty, but Charlotte assumes she can ...

Historia
VBI (Vermont Bureau of Investigation) head Joe Gunther and his team are called in to investigate a series of violent deaths that appear unrelated until telltale clues reveal a linkage between them and that all of the deaths are, in fact, murders. However, apart from a single drop of unexplained blood left at each crime scene, there are no obvious connections between the victims or the cases. In the search for the elusive truth, the VBI must plumb the depths of every suspect's past.

Death of a Series
Revisado: 03-22-25
Loved this series until the last 3 books, when the language became progressively crude and the liberal prejudices against people of faith and Republicans by way of ridiculous characterizations. Sorry to say goodbye to Joe Gunther and the VBI, but the author has alienated his audience -- dumb move, Mr. Mayor.

Historia
Over the years investigator Joe Gunther has battled drug pushers and corporate swindlers, grappled with environmental conspirators, and foiled gangs and home invaders. But while usually successful, Gunther hasn't always come out on top. Thirty years earlier, store owner Klaus Oberfeldt was robbed and beaten senseless. Gunther, distracted by his wife's losing struggle with cancer in the same hospital where Klaus was slipping from life, did something that would plague him for the rest of his career: He let the case go cold, burying it in the past along with his private sorrows.

Disconcerting Political Theme
Revisado: 12-26-24
I have loved the entire series...to this point -- great character development, interesting plots, clean language, and an engaging narrator. This last book is troubling in that the author has danced dangerously close to ethnic hate speech cloaked in a "political" discussion of military sales to Israel. While I am not Jewish, I find the premise of the plot and character motivation too close for comfort to pro-Palestinian antisemitism. Really?!? With all the possibilities for human conflict, Mr. Grainger had to pick this bone for a work of fiction that supposed to be entertainment? Am seriously reconsidering whether I will purchase books from the Kings Lake series now.

Too Many F-Bombs
Revisado: 11-14-24
love the characters in this series but the over abundance of f-bombs is off-putting. also, am more than a little annoyed that yet another british mystery author has a "thing" against religion, making the person of faith a hypocritical villain. show me ANYone that is human that is not hypocritical to some degree...honestly! the prejudice is blatant and insulting.

Angry Author?
Revisado: 01-06-23
My book "finished" after I fell asleep but I'm not rewinding. I was disappointed at how angry and psychologically wrecked most of the characters (especially the heroes) were. Coupled with repeated social diatribe on the unjustices of Regency England (yes, we're all aware of how women and the poor were treated), the book wore me out...not relaxing. I felt like the author had an ax to grind. no thanks.

Surpisingly Off-putting
Revisado: 11-11-22
I read Regency novels to "get away" from Corporate America, where it can get a little rough and tumble. It was like this book was written by two different authors -- one whom I've come to love, filled with witty dialogue and interesting characters -- and one who inserted gratuitous vulgarity and f-bombs that jarred me while listening. Sorry, but not relaxing to me…didn’t finish…returned for credit…won’t be buying another in the series.
