Plot never became evident

I could not finish this book because I could not discern any plot. The performance was excellent.

Toopa toopa toopa

The performance was extremely irritating. Every time a weapon fires the AI voice says various versions of toopa toppa and other really silly sounds. The story is so full of holes that one can't take it seriously.. If you just want noise in your ear this is the book for you.

Starts good then gets really irritating.

As other reviews have related, the story was great and then became a rambling nonsense. I admit I have a hearing loss problem but I wear a headset to better understand the narration. As the characters are added, I understood less and less even with playing sections over.
So, the book seemed to be a winner and collapsed in a smoldering heap of who cares.

Finally a really good book

I've been struggling to find audio books that I would consider page turners, this was one of them. Great character development and extraordinary narration and very good story. I am an old Heinlein fan and enjoyed the connection to this book. The lead character is a joy to experience. Go for it, I think you will like it.

Great story and performance

A fabulous tale of epic determination and intellect. The author must be a scientist to be able to plot all of the technical details in terms lay persons can understand. Character development is very good and with Ray Porter performing the book is twice as good. Porter is my go to performer for entertainment in audio books. I klick his link to pick books for a good listen. Give me more Andy and Ray.

I look forward to listening to more of the story. It’s been a while since I have enjoyed an audio book as much as this one.

Sparse Character Development

I think characters should be detailed enough to develop interest in the story line. About the only character developed was the ludicrous asshole Russian that hates everybody and everything and is willing to destroy the mission because his daddy treated him badly. The story concept is good but somehow I never actually cared for the central characters.

Good solid entertainment

The premise of the book is similar to his Boboverse, but still entertaining. The Narrator is excellent, same as Bob. Hopefully another is in the works.

Would you try another book from Jeff VanderMeer and/or the narrators?

I tried to like it but could not get by the listless characters that seemed to have no will to live. The book doled out a slow plot development with no real substance. I would not try another book from Jeff VanderMeer.

Did the narrators do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Narrators were fine, material was not.

What character would you cut from Area X?

All of them.

I think the plot was trite and rediculous. I could not finish it. Don’t bother with trying to read.
