Historia
Robert Howard grew up in poverty in a small town in Alabama, with a strong sense of faith and determination. When he enlisted in the army at age seventeen, his Granny Callie’s words echoed in his head, and he pledged to follow them to the bitter end. In the most dire of combat experiences, Howard ran directly toward his opponents, sacrificing his body to protect others and to complete the mission above all else. Time and time again, he survived battles that should have claimed his life, suffering countless bullets, a spinal injury, and shrapnel and blast wounds.

Well written and narrated - graphic and real. The author appropriately goes into detail on military jargon and field craft to bring greenies up to speed. I wish the author had given more background on the “nards” and the bond shared by those under close combat. Great read about a great breed.

Revisado: 03-15-25
An outstanding tail of seafaring warriors and the perils of living on the edge. The detailed plot is both interesting and fast moving - no boring hoop lah here. A recommended reading for sailors, skimmers and bubble heads alike. The interaction is realistic. The author is gifted and shares a snapshot of a sailors life both at sea steaming and in harms way. As a retired Navy Chief Boatswain’s Mate, I can attest to the realism. I’d recommend this book to shipmates and landlubbers alike.

December 7, 1941 - America is attacked by the Japanese and dragged into a worldwide struggle for power unlike anything ever seen on Earth. While the United States and the Navy reel from the devastation of Pearl Harbor, the Nazis begin a brutal campaign within sight of the shores of the nation. Newly promoted Master Gunnery Sergeant Richard Rhodes returns to Vietnam after thirty days leave in Hong Kong and three months training in the states to take over as Operations Chief for the Third Recon Battalion in Dong Ha. Master Guns Rhodes was expecting a tour on the operation staff after an eighteen month extended tour in I-Corps with 3rd Battalion 4th Marines. Wow - these were true heroes even hippies had a soft spot in their hearts for! A must read story that takes you from hanging off the side of a mountain, hidden under vines and brush with a venomous snake staring him in the eye as a north Vietnamese solder stands above peering the jungles below, to walking past hippies as he returns home and getting a warm welcome. Great book full of action.

Historia
The island of Iwo Jima was the epic land and sea battle that produced one of the iconic images of WWII: the Marines raising the American flag on Mount Surabachi, an active volcano that was the site of intense hand to hand combat. In this gripping novel, P. T. Deutermann follows a young gunnery liaison officer, Lee Bishop, who during the ferocious battle for the island is pulled from his station aboard the USS Nevada to serve onshore as a spotter, calling in coordinates for the ship to target with missiles.

20,000 Japanese troops resist 100k strong amphibious force!
Revisado: 12-12-24
Simple put - the Japanese had years to fortify defenses that survived naval bombardment prior to amphibious landings - that includes 16 inch naval guns from battleships. Each 16” round weighs the same as a VW bug or 2000 pounds! This story gives a first person account of when “valor was an uncommon virtue.” Great read.

Revisado: 11-07-24
Great story - the Korean War is commonly referred to as the forgotten war and unfortunately, rightly so. Not many books out there about it. Like, did you know that America has fought the Chinese before, and it was bloody! This story gives a snapshot following the chosen valley loss - highly recommend this book

Historia
Author Doug Beed relates his memories of the men and missions during his year (1968-69) as a combat soldier with the First Infantry Division in Vietnam. After two years of college he couldn't afford to continue, so he was forced to relinquish his student deferment and enter the draft. He tried various strategies to get a non-combat job; nevertheless, he ended up in the infantry and was assigned to Vietnam. The stories in this book depict the year Doug spent in Alpha Company, where he spent days on patrols finding and killing North Vietnamese soldiers.

Reflective and real
Revisado: 04-06-23
Told from the view of a grunt trudging through the knife grass and blood sucking leeches of Vietnam. Read this book and the next time you see an old guy wearing a hat with the words Vietnam over rows of ribbons you’ll want to pay his back or shake his hand. The author takes you to those jungles, the firefights, loss, friendship, the fine line of fear and rage, and finally an understanding which leads to healing invisible wounds.
