Loved it
Revisado: 03-27-25
Realistic, well-written, and engaging. Kept my interest throughout the story...I liked how the author kept the story interesting and suspenseful without making all the characters cliche archetypes and didn't try to impress the reader with overly nerdy infodump in an attempt to impress the reader with how much nuclear war knowledge he possessed. Great audio book and well worth a listen.

Forty years later, the pain of his personal tragedy still echoes within John Hopper. He retreats to the small town, Ripley, West Virginia, and is content being alone and in peace. He spends his evenings as an amateur podcast host, anonymously broadcasting rants about what is wrong with the world. didn't like it
Revisado: 03-09-25
I didn't like it.
There was no reason given at the beginning of the story for us to actually like the main character.
Therefore it was an arduous journey for the reader to have to trudge through the entire book (that dealt with transportation problems more than anything else). If this is supposed to be a tale about redemption and repentance, then it gives us a reason to actually care about the main character from the offset.
The second letdown was that I thought the book was supposed to be about a nuclear war, not an asteroid storm hitting the Earth.
What a letdown. I'm glad it was short because I would have had trouble enduring it if it had been longer. The only part I enjoyed was the roof collapsing in on the people. At least about 4 sentences of the story were remotely interesting.
And “300 days” of what?…whatever happened to what the title of the book was about in the first place? Great…stay inside for 300 days because it’s cold out?….what a “thrill ride”.
Man, these positive reviews seem very very suspicious.

HOLY COW! Very boring, cliche, and trashy
Revisado: 03-04-25
The only remotely good thing about this audiobook was some of the technology the author spoke about but my goodness how boring.
I could care less if the characters lived or died because there was absolutely nothing stated that defined them as moral.
It seemed like everybody was Mr. and Mrs. Tough Guy/Tough Girl tactical expert.
Kind of repulsing how the secretary talked about having "F" buddies when the commander was trying to flirt with her.
And the story was utterly vapid, non-engaging, boring. How could you make a nuclear war so boring? You'll literally have to go out of your way to do that but this author somehow succeeded.
What surprises me is that there are so many other audible "nuclear war" books that received lower reviews that are 10 times better than this rubbish.
The narrator's voice kept on reminding me of the "Little Nicky" voice Adam Sandler used for his movie. LOL
DO NOT waste your time.

Historia
Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have. Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario.

Revisado: 02-03-25
Love the information in this book but Jacobsen's breathy warbling whiny narration is horrible. I can't understand why she chose to narrate the book herself. Anyone else she got to narrate this book would have been better.

Wow! One of the best, if not the best.
Revisado: 01-28-25
If this book is not the best audio book i've ever listened to, it is one of the best. I enjoyed every single part of this book. It's like a fine wine. Wow!....super! The narrator's voice worked better for some of the charaters than for others but where it's not the "best voice" it's not irritating, it's just kind of funny sounding (i.e. Roger Breakstone) lol. That being said, she does do a great job for the general 3rd person narration.

Why does this series have such high reviews?
Revisado: 10-31-24
I can't understand why this book has such high reviews. It reminded me a Twilight/The Hunger Games non the planet Mars as a Greek Saga.
It's just another rehashed spin on the same old "oppressed people's rise up to overthrow the wealthy imperialistic aristocrats".
You could almost predict every progression of the plot sequence.
I found it to be utterly boring and somewhat pushing the same old liberal woke narratives. i.e. "everyone is a fascist if they don't agree with me".
This particular book was not for me.

Historia
President John F. Kennedy once said, “Mankind must put an end to war or war will put an end to mankind.” Today, a new element has been introduced to the preparations—artificial intelligence. The United States, in its quest to rapidly and effectively defend the nation from a nuclear attack, has incorporated AI into its operation plan of response. But what if the artificial intelligence relied upon by the nation’s decision-makers is wrong? What if AI takes the controls of America’s nuclear response? Might it trigger nuclear war without justification?

1 hour left in this book and where are the nukes?
Revisado: 08-15-24
I'm sure a lot of research went into this book and I hate giving bad reviews, but I am literally on chapter 47 with 1.5 hours left in the book and the author is still giving info dumps on lobster fishing and some couple getting married? I am beginning to doubt many of the positive reviews were legit.
Since it's a relatively new book -- at the time I am writing this -- I guarantee there will soon be dozens of others expressing the same level of disappointment that I have. I could care less about the author trying to impress readers with his info dump on fishing boats and lobster fishing, Moreover, I have little concern for the labored detailed focus on the couple getting married. These two characters are so uninteresting and canned that I don't even remember their names.

There are a few points that I thought were ...
Revisado: 05-20-24
There are a few points that I thought were a bit unrealistic, and boy-scouty and other points were incorrect. For instance "using passenger pigeons" to send messages?
And “yes”, you can use a Berkey water filter to remove radioactive particulates from water (the author claimed you could not).
I like that he suggested a way to build an above-ground structure to avoid fallout as opposed to always having to bury a structure even though the above-ground structure would be virtually impossible to conceal.
He did however have a considerable amount of points that were factual and very useful and overall I thought the book was very worth the money.
If you want a more brutally honest idea of what will happen after a SHTF I recommend reading Survival Theory II by Jonathan Hollerman.
I’m sure a lot of the information in this book is things most preppers have heard dozens of times already, but at the end of the day, this book is worth reading and I’m sure you’ll learn something new no matter who you are.

I don't think the author understands the audience
Revisado: 04-01-24
I don't think that the author understands that most readers don't care about the characters. Readers want to hear more about the science behind the EMP and how people will cope with it. The characters of this story are not that much of a concern.
I loved the first book, but in this book, it seems the author focused too much on character development when nobody even cares to know any of the boring explanations of details regarding them.
I would have liked to hear more about the ingenuity of the people and how they dealt (or failed to deal) with the circumstances they found themselves in. I'm disappointed that this book was such a dud.
Perhaps if the characters weren't such a typical GI Joe archetype, it would have been more interesting.

A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

This audiobook seems a scam and the reviews fake
Revisado: 12-07-23
Sorry guys. This story was puerile relativistic "blow-em-up" rehashed sci-fi adventure movie clips with cartoonish dialogue and unfunny schoolboy humor mixed in. I was completely bored out of my mind. No theme, no structure, no irony, no goals, no depth of character, and no suspense, the attempt at humor was not remotely funny or witty. About as engaging as watching a lava lamp for 40 hours straight. I guess the cartoonish cringeworthy Princess cat was supposed to be funny, but was really stupidly insulting and nauseating to the listener. Either the 5-star reviews are just kids (that have never read any other books) or it's fake reviews trying to get this utter garbage sold on Audible. Really disappointing. Please do not waste any money on this scam.
