The audio engineer should be fired
Revisado: 10-06-24
As others have said, the audio mixing on this book is TERRIBLE. Of the six red rising books, only this one is a problem. Headphones, car speakers, everything needed literally full blast volume to hear this book and even then I had to hit rewind regularly to catch what was said. Sadly, all of this should have been easily fixed with a normalization or proper compressor setup before publishing.
As for the story, even by red rising standards, this book is especially gut wrenching. This book is "the empire strikes back" but exponentially more epic. The emotional trauma and impossible decisions the characters deal with are tragic. It is an outstanding story, as all of his books are, but this one is far from uplifting.
Just like the real world, but unlike most books and movies, nothing is black and white. Difficult decisions are always gray areas, a compromise where either direction comes with heavy cost. Pierce Brown is absolutely brilliant at capturing that kind of reality.

Historia
Mass is humanoid, but genetically evolved to cope with greater pressures, stronger gravity, and heavier densities than those of an ancient planet he never knew, nor probably ever would. For Mass, Earth is millennia in the past. His companions are equally diverse, differently evolved, and most unsuitable to him and to one another. Each live on a separate plane they had grown on separate worlds. Yet survival might depend on communication.

Entertaining
Revisado: 06-01-21
I found this to be an entertaining listen though it was nothing mind blowing. Feels much like a sub story set in Asimov’s “Foundation” universe after the fall of the empire. Big powerful empire mysteriously disappears leaving thousands of planets behind to get by on their own. The story kind of shifts gears a few times from sci-fi space explorer to personal drama to love triangle to philosophy debate. The overall effect is like one of those tv shows that you keep watching as mindless entertainment. It’s quite enjoyable as long as your expectations are set appropriately.

Historia
Civil war looms in the Bobiverse in this brand-new, epic-length adventure by Audible number one best seller Dennis E. Taylor. More than a hundred years ago, Bender set out for the stars and was never heard from again. There has been no trace of him despite numerous searches by his clone-mates. Now Bob is determined to organize an expedition to learn Bender’s fate - whatever the cost. But nothing is ever simple in the Bobiverse. Bob’s descendants are out to the 24th generation now, and replicative drift has produced individuals who can barely be considered Bobs anymore.

Great follow up but with a caveat
Revisado: 01-16-21
I absolutely loved the first three books. In fact, I think they are the only audiobooks in my library that I have listened to multiple times. I suppose that how much you adore the series might corelate with your personality type to some degree. To some, becoming a Bob would be their own personal hell. To others it would be the ultimate pinnacle of existence. Although I can see both sides, I fall into the later category.
Part of the appeal is the peaceful and "happily ever after" way the original trilogy ended. It was idyllic without being cliche and that made it very satisfying. However, utopia is an unstable state that can not last forever.
So, in a way, this book messes up that perfect happily ever after ending by logically progressing through time to the inevitable result of reality doing what reality does. The only constant is change.
That isn't necessarily a bad thing and this book does an excellent job of continuing the story. I thoroughly enjoyed it. But I still feel a touch of regret for allowing myself to face the fact that even being a Bob can get complicated.

Historia
George Orwell depicts a gray, totalitarian world dominated by Big Brother and its vast network of agents, including the Thought Police - a world in which news is manufactured according to the authorities' will and people live tepid lives by rote. Winston Smith, a hero with no heroic qualities, longs only for truth and decency. But living in a social system in which privacy does not exist and where those with unorthodox ideas are brainwashed or put to death, he knows there is no hope for him.

As relevant today as it was in 1949
Revisado: 10-21-20
It's incredible that a book written so long ago could still be so relatable today. I'll leave my review here using Orwell's own words. This one passage is sufficient to give me chills as it is almost prophetic in how it relates to the modern political climate.
"Oceanic society rests ultimately on the belief that Big Brother is omnipotent and that the Party is infallible. But since in reality Big Brother is not omnipotent and the party is not infallible, there is need for an unwearying, moment-to-moment flexibility in the treatment of facts. The keyword here is BLACKWHITE. Like so many Newspeak words, this word has two mutually contradictory meanings. Applied to an opponent, it means the habit of impudently claiming that black is white, in contradiction of the plain facts. Applied to a Party member, it means a loyal willingness to say that black is white when Party discipline demands this. But it means also the ability to BELIEVE that black is white, and more, to KNOW that black is white, and to forget that one has ever believed the contrary."

Historia
No espionage missions have been kept more secret than those involving American submarines. Now, Blind Man's Bluff shows for the first time how the navy sent submarines wired with self-destruct charges into the heart of Soviet seas to tap crucial underwater telephone cables. It unveils how the navy's own negligence might have been responsible for the loss of the USS Scorpion, a submarine that disappeared, all hands lost, 30 years ago.

Really enjoyed these untold stories
Revisado: 08-02-20
If you are into submarines at all or simply enjoy learning the personal stories behind historical events this book is for you. The subject matter is a rare category of history that was highly influential in the way the world turned out yet is still largely unknown to the public.

Just get it!
Revisado: 08-19-18
Forget the vague title and the book summary that sounds like every other "one guy rises from nothing to overthrow the evil oppressor" cliche.
This book is OUTSTANDING and I loved every minute of it. The reader is compelling and adds to the excitement without ever being too over the top. Lots of creative twists you never see coming in the story. The character development is excellent.
My only critique is that there are so many secondary characters I sometimes struggled to keep track of which was which. But I'll admit that a big part of that I was listening rather than reading and you really need to pay full attention to this story. No multitasking while this one plays!
In summary it's one of the best books I've experienced in a long time. I'll be looking forward to sequels!
