Historia
Declaring he needs to clear his conscience, a dying man walks into Scotland Yard and confesses that he killed his cousin five years earlier during the Great War. When Inspector Ian Rutledge presses for details, the man evades his questions, revealing only that he hails from a village east of London. With little information and no body to open an official inquiry, Rutledge begins to look into the case on his own. Less than two weeks later, the alleged killer’s body is found floating in the Thames, a bullet in the back of his head.

Interesting mystery overall, but midway through the killer became apparent due to their being featured so much. I do feel that the main character is rather wooden and the author could show other aspects of his personality rather than just focus on his shell-shock. Simon Prebble is excellent as always.

Miss Marple: The Complete Story Collection gathers together in one magnificent volume all of Agatha Christie’s short stories featuring her beloved intrepid investigator, Miss Marple. It’s an unparalleled compendium of murder, mayhem, mystery, and detection that represents some of the finest short form fiction in the crime fiction field, and is an essential omnibus for Christie fans.

Unable to finish
Revisado: 04-24-24
Although I am a Christie fan, the narrator's grating voice made it impossible to listen past a few stories. None of the characters were soothing to listen to; it was a nonstop barrage on the senses.
The stories were too dated and although they were probably fresh when first published, the plots have become so overused that the story endings were obvious. Christie did overuse the impersonation device in her writing. Still, I would have finished listening had the narration not been so annoying.

The long-awaited sequel to Time and Again . Si Morley is back and the world may never be the same. When Time and Again was published in 1970, it immediately developed a loyal following that has grown with each passing year. With this book, Jack Finney returned to the same magical territory and finds Ruben Prien still at work with the Project, still dreaming of altering man's fate by going back in time to adjust events... to interfere, some might say, with destiny.

Disappointing Sequel
Revisado: 04-21-24
The concept of time travel is intriguing, but due to a thin plot and ineffectual hero who is out-witted by almost everyone he encounters, the reader is let down. There is far too much padding in this novel with endless descriptions by the author of places he never could have seen. The main character spends all his time gaping at women and his surroundings (as well as meeting every historical figure the author could squeeze into the story) rather than focusing on what he has been sent to accomplish. The overlong side stories are distracting and added little. I felt disappointed, but not surprised by the ending. The hero could have done so much more, but seemed to just bumble along without ever understanding other characters' motives.

Two police officers are about to head home after a long night shift when they receive one last call. En route to investigate, the patrol car spins off the road, killing one of the exhausted cops and leaving the other in critical condition. Detective Peter Diamond is assigned to look into the case. His supervisor is desperately hoping Diamond will not discover the officers were at fault. Instead Diamond discovers something even worse - a civilian on a motorized tricycle was involved in the crash and has been lying on the side of the road for hours.

Disappointing
Revisado: 03-30-24
This book was very interesting in the beginning, but then the supposedly brilliant detective focuses on the most unlikely character until close to the end. The obtuse detective had no real evidence, yet persisted in his tunnel vision until a last minute eureka moment gave him all the answers. He was so panicky in the ending crisis that he calls the hospital demanding they close the entire ward, rather than calmly asking them to have nurses stay with the patient until he arrives. The "super" villan was unconvincing. This author pads the content too much with constant, irrelevant huddles by the crime team.

Revisado: 03-29-24
The story was dull and the characters uninteresting. I struggled to finish, but kept with it to see if there would be an interesting ending. I thought it would be a mystery with plots twists, but the story was just endless, pointless police interviews. The ending was disappointing as well. I'm glad the book was included in my membership so I didn't have to waste a credit.

Disappointing Book
Revisado: 03-23-24
The initial backstory was very interesting and showed promise, but the story got bogged down with the usual clashes between police personnel and excessive side stories that led nowhere. The protagonist was annoying throughout with his rigidity and judgmental behavior. I could hardly finish this one because the inspector was so aloof and self-righteous that he was hard to care about him.
As usual, Simon Prebble was excellent as narrator, but I'm done with this series.

Not Christie's best and poor narration
Revisado: 09-11-23
This book was predictable and the main character was clueless as to the perpetrator. The two main characters were wooden; the only animated and somewhat interesting characters were the suspects. Unfortunately the narrator can't do male voices effectively. it was hard to listen to the end.

Weak Story
Revisado: 08-28-22
The start to this book was interesting enough, but the characters were never fully developed and the story dragged on with no purpose since the solution was pretty much known quite early on. The murder plot was improbable with far too many red herrings. This book is basically about Morse's love fantasy.
The narration was good, but the constant quotes for each chapter were distracting. Heading quotes are fine in print because the reader can skim past them, but don't work well for audiobooks.

Who was that masked woman? That was the question plaguing Perry Mason. No one loves a good mystery more than Mason - but being asked to represent a client who is concealing her identity, not to mention the particulars of her case, has given even the legendary legal eagle a case of ruffled feathers. Yet the intriguing cloak-and-dagger tactics have Perry hopelessly hooked. As for the silent siren behind the mask, is she heiress Byrl Gailord or penniless Adelle Hastings?

Disappointing
Revisado: 07-19-22
A weak story, uninteresting characters, transparent plot, along with the annoying dialog made it an effort to finish this one. The conversations are just too dated and corny and the narrator just barks out the lines in a grating manner. Della's "voice" was especially odd and annoying. The actual murderer was obvious from their first appearance.

Overall it was a thought-provoking and poignant novel. I felt the characters were less developed than they could have been and their reactions to the crisis were not believable. Everyone seemed to retreat into a fantasy world, which seemed inconsistent with what the reader knew of their otherwise strong characters. I especially thought the mother's interaction with her baby was unnatural. Still, the book was incredibly interesting and I still think about it. Not sure about the science either, but of course it was written in a time when much less was known about possible effects of nuclear disaster. I especially liked the narrator; he's one of my favorites.
