Historia
For Landon Stackhouse, being called up from the Calgary farm team is exciting and terrifying, even if, as the backup goalie, he rarely leaves the bench. A quiet loner by nature, Landon knows he gives off strong “don’t talk to me” vibes. The only player who doesn’t seem to notice is Calgary’s superstar young winger, Casey Hicks. Casey treats Landon like an old friend, even though they’ve only interacted briefly in the past. He’s endlessly charming and completely laid-back in a way that Landon absolutely can’t relate to.

Oh my god I love these characters so much!
Revisado: 02-06-25
They're both NHL players, professional hockey players, so they should follow the stereotype of being big brutes. But they are absolutely adorable! At least one of them is. This one has a boyish personality and pretty much says whatever comes into his mind. He constantly gives in to cravings for Christmas Cap'n Crunch, McFlurries and lemonade. He gets drunk a lot and keeps letting it slip that he's crushing on the team's new goalie. And he's a bit of a fashion queen. The goalie isn't really adorable. In fact he's a bit of a wuss. But he falls in love with his adorable teammate and that makes him adorable too. The story also takes place in an adorable universe where not only NHL players are cool with their teammates being gay but everyone is cool with NHL players being gay. Even when two dudes are making out on a Las Vegas dance floor. Because two dudes making out on a Las Vegas dance floor is absolutely adorable! At least the author made it seem that way.

This seemed like an unpolished work
Revisado: 02-04-25
The author used a lot of lengthy flashbacks to build his characters. Leaning so heavily on this device and doing so repeatedly became bothersome, like a five-minute commercial break during a TV show. Just forget the plot -- if there was a plot -- and pay attention to this tertiary information. It got to the point that when another flashback would start I'd think to myself, "Oh, no! Not another one!" The author's tortuous storytelling also presented itself in many dramatic episodes concluding with the main character waking up and realizing it was only a dream. Very junior high school-ish. Then there was the author's use of foreshadowing so heavy-handed that it was obvious when, where and why the story was going to turn. Foreshadowing is fun. So are canards to keep the reader guessing where the story might go. But there was no mystery in this title. The author made it plainly obvious where he was taking the story. Finally, and perhaps the writer's worst sin, was how contrived so many of the scenes were. Having the characters act like no human ever would seemed to be the author's only way of putting the characters in a conflict they would then have to work out of. Or just ignore until the next dream sequence, flashback or obvious foreshadowing. Basically this book was awful. I'm giving it two stars instead of one because I actually made it to the end. So it must have had something going for it.

Extremely boring
Revisado: 01-25-25
Scott Brick’s narration is the best thing about this tedious “story” on politics, but only insofar as it might provide a white noise alternative to a loud airplane cabin or crowded train. There was virtually no character development. It was difficult to tell who was who. The story takes place in the distant future as the galaxy falls into interstellar chaos. It is a future where newspapers and encyclopedias still exist. Talk about a lack of imagination. Ugh.

Constant conflict and personal growth
Revisado: 12-28-24
A really spectacular historic novel and MM romance woven together. A bit of a cliffhanger ending makes you wonder if the author was simply making a point. A gay romance in early 1900s England was all about navigating the inherent dangers of a world that had outlawed you. A couples conflicts would never end. Wonderful main and supporting character who all grew throughout the novel. I was sorry when it ended and those characters were taken away from me.

Historia
As his family falls apart day by day, Robin finds himself pulling away from the unquestioned, unexamined life that has been carefully laid out for him. Small acts of rebellion lead to larger questions of what it means to stand on his own. Falling into a fevered triangle with two other outcasts, Todd Spicer and Scott Schatz, Robin embarks on an explosive odyssey of sexual self-discovery that will take him beyond the spring-green lawns of suburbia, beyond the fraying fabric barely holding together his quickly unraveling family, and into a complex future, beyond the world of normal boys.

But I couldn't stop listening to this coming of age drama about family dysfunction and teenage angst. The protagonist is searching for his identity while trying to shed his boyhood humiliations that earned him the nickname "Girlie Underwear," only to suffer further humiliations and rejections. Yet he struggles onward in such a touching way. He'll tug at your heartstrings, leave you sympathetic to his decisions and exasperate you at the same time.

Di Canzio follows their story past the end of Maurice to the front lines of battle in World War I and beyond. Forster, who tried to write an epilogue about the future of his characters, was stymied by the radical change that the Great War brought to their world. With the hindsight of a century, di Canzio imagines a future for them and a past for Alec—a young villager possessed of remarkable passion and self-knowledge.

I could not stop listening, not even at work. I canceled social engagements so I could keep listening. I walked to my destinations rather than take a commuter train so I would not have to stop listening. The author puts his characters into a long string of impossibly difficult circumstances, and through it all the main characters beat all odds to come together, stay together, grow stronger and enrich the lives of everyone around them. Maybe my favorite work of historical fiction.

Spoiled teenagers complaining about life
Revisado: 12-21-24
For 12 hours. They feel misunderstood. They just want to have a great junior year. They feel unseen. But they also want to hide. They feel entitled. So they steal stop signs that cause accidents and don't feel guilty. They feel excitement through their social media personas. So they use these personas to destroy their friends and rivals. They moan about life and manipulate those around them and basically nothing else happens. This is the story. Just slide down a steep, icy road naked. It'll be less painful than listening to this wretched piece of attempted fiction.

Miscast narrator
Revisado: 12-06-24
They hired some old man to narrate this otherwise rollicking teenage enemies to lovers romp. When the romance ended up in the bedroom it sounded like some politician bragging about his trips to Jeffrey Epstein’s island. It was disgusting to hear some old dude describe two teens getting frisky. I wanted to strangle him. Or maybe call the FBI to have him arrested. He completely destroyed an otherwise excellent story. Don’t waste your credit. The miscast narrator will make you fight the urge to throw up.

I was able to push through for almost 7 hours
Revisado: 10-21-24
in listening to this account of a 1950s gay couple who ran away from each other, fearing the political climate of the day. Joe McCarthy, Roy Cohn, Richard Nixon and a host of other 1950s politicians play roles in the story, which as you might suspect is just dreadful. I'm not sure what the story was or even if there was a story as I could not discern a plot in the seven hours I kept hoping for one. Having now decided to give up on this title, I feel like I've been released from a long prison term.

Caspien Deveraux was poison. It took me years to realise that he hadn't been born like that. He'd been cultivated and nurtured by a careful hand and a bitter heart. When I first met him, he was a bud. One primed to bloom beautifully and deadly. One I should have torn out at the root.

Revisado: 10-15-24
The beautiful writing stands out in this story of treachery and young love. But so do the characters, the dialogue and the torrid love-making. You won’t be able to stop listening as the mystery builds, as the author drops hints, as the characters ever so slowly reveal their true nature. Absolutely brilliant.
