I want to love it BUT.....
Revisado: 03-02-25
I am only a few chapters in, and I will finish this book because I love the author, and the story is good, HOWEVER, this narrator is HORRIBLE. If she's not yelling, she sounds extremely abrasive. Almost angry. She also finishes all sentences in a low negative tone. There isn't much influctuation in here sentences. When she does other character voices there is a strange echo sound... and lastly.. I had to go in and SLOW down the voice speed because she is speed reading through the book like it's a race. Just terrible. I think I will skip any other books she is narrating. I really hope this author doesn't use her anymore. It's not enjoyable to listen to this lady, unfortunately.

Historia
They call it tribute. It's just another word for sacrifice. When a weak human king offers brides to appease the goblin horde, the goblin king sees his chance. He'll wed them to his oldest generals; warriors whose time has passed. Two birds, one stone. Keep the humans in check, remind his generals they're disposable. Only problem? These battle-scarred veterans didn't survive decades of warfare by being stupid. And they didn't earn their scars by being merciful. Between assassination attempts, political schemes, and a royal family that makes rattlesnakes look cuddly, the tribute brides are ...

Revisado: 10-27-24
I like the storyline. I really don't like the virtual voice, it cheapens the affect. There are a lot of missed emotions.. and even a couple glitches. And... where is book 2?? I listened to this... now ready for the next... and it's not on here?? Very disappointed.

I can't finish...
Revisado: 07-14-24
I was excited... a long listen fantasy, for free, now that's my jam. However, each chapter is long, and while at chapter 13, I finally couldn't listen anymore.
Up to this point, all the MCs are having conversations that basically explain to the reader.. magics, histories, etc. Way too much time "setting the scene" giving the reader information. And OF COURSE she shows up from the human world and is unknowingly EXTREMELY powerful, and beautiful, and accepted and lived by all. (cue my eyeroll)
Ok.... so I could possibly overlook all this and continue to listen to this very immature book, BUT.. the narrators swap back and forth constantly which is distracting and the female narrator has given a voice and tone to Aryn that is loud, baby-ish, immature, and has no depth. IE: (small spoiler) When Kai wakes up in the hospital bed and she is next to him... he talks to her. Now... My mind has set a scene... a semi darkened room, it's quiet, and they are laying close to each other. He talks.. and it's ok.. normal. But I would think their conversation would sound intimate, speaking in low voices and yet the narrator has her practically yelling like a spoiled baby in a petulant tone... and it sounds AWFUL. The intimate face to face moment is trashed. Just no. nope. it's bad... I can't listen to this.

Shy, introverted Dr. Cate Kensie never imagined that she would inherit a beautiful, and oddly quirky, castle nestled in the picturesque Scottish Highlands. Truthfully, she was sure that she didn’t have any family left after her parents died in a car accident several years before, but then, she had gotten the phone call, and her entire world had turned upside down.

I wantednto like this, but....
Revisado: 07-06-24
I really wanted to like this story. I am on Chapter 20, and I am not sure if I can keep going.
First.. What a great storyline this could have been. I encourage you to read the other reviews, because they have the same concerns I do. No imagination.. no descriptions of the characters, the castle, London, Scotland, or really.. anything. Tons of step by step movements, the weather, and how she slept. Tons of repetitive days and a lot of sitting on a chaise, eating, walking, hugging, looking for her dog. She is supposed to be an intelligent lady, but is pretty dumb about everything. She has no life, no friends, no family... things that could have been exciting were not. When I say she does the same boring things over and over ....and over and over... I mean......seriously. She explores constantly, then finds stuff and takes a break and makes a mental note to come backntonit later, constantly. Good grief. She cannot figure out that there is a mystery in anything. I mean nothing........
(spoiler alert/ she is filthy rich now, she sends no money to the poor lady who lived down the hall? She just shuns her before she leaves? Why ever bring her up then? What about Jeff? I mean... we couldn't rub the new fortunate opportunity in his face at all after he was so ugly? Missed opportunity. She worked at this place for how long and made ONE semi friend? Everyone else hates her enough not to wish her good luck after the email was sent? Weird. She has never been out of the country, but just says.. yep.. I'm moving. Gets to London and stays in her hotel and orders room service. What???? All she talks about is how much chillier it is in London and Scotland compared to her home in the U.S. She could have made a good friend who could have helped solve mysteries with her with the lawyer lady, but no... And why the sudd en possible recognition in the photo of the MC and her parents, but nothing comes of that?? She finds 9009 closets with things in them to look at later. Um.. I've never seen a castle with closets, but ok. Where is the dank dungeons down below? Or maybe secret passages in the walls? Is there electricity in this castle? and...WIFI? Really? She is perplexed about the state of dress of the servant she saw... but what is the difference between what she was wearing and what Mrs. Frasier wears. we don't know what Mrs. Frasier wears. Cate considers everyone's words. Almost as if she has a really hard time understanding normal everyday conversation. And how many times are we gonna choose where to eat, plan to read a boom but then put it down, plan to do research but do it later..etc. And don't get me stared on this watch.)
The NARRATOR... holy smokes.. this lady cannot pronounce her R's. Definitely has a speech impediment. She sighs and sounds tired while reading... she trips over words, and does not have proper undulation in her voice. She reads the story in a very monotone voice. You can hear her swallowing, breathing, sighing, and she sounds exhausted while reading. And those missing R's.... I can't stand that. Oh, but when the MC is missing her dog, she screams his name over and over. Very startling. had to adjust volume. I don't like that either. Don't scream!
I wanted this to be good. I am very disappointed.

great..however.....
Revisado: 06-12-24
I am loving the storyline and creativity.. however.. I just have a few little things that I find hard to deal with. First off... I just started book 3.. and there is a different narrator for each book. It's really hard to adjust to that. A whole new voice for the same characters... when you read.. you have those voices in your mind, and they never change. You find familiarity in those voices. It's irritating to have to get used to an entire new voice reading the names and voices aloud.. and even pouncing things slightly different. Now.. the story. I'm OVER the word "prick" how many times can that word be used??? And "Indeed" has become the authors favorite word. I know Feyrahs anger leads to a lot of the transitions that are needed, but goodness. That girl has a lot of overly angry periods of time. Granted.. some is warranted.. and I do understand the trauma. But... maybe the maturity level is a tad bit low in some cases. I'm hoping for growth in book 3.

The summer in question started out with hot, fun-filled days and new friendships. We had just turned thirteen and had our whole lives ahead of us. But that was before her. Before we became known as the Hixton Five and our lives become defined by one night. It’s hard to believe twenty years have passed since she was locked away. But now she’s free and strange things have started to happen. When I close my eyes, the creeping anxiety and fear is overwhelming and all too real. Because the monster is back, and I know she has a score to settle with us.

good.. but...
Revisado: 03-17-24
good story.. but the narrator was HORRIBLE. Her voices.. were awful and she whispers constantly then in the same sentence will SCREAM something out. so constant up and down on my volume and anger because she screamed. I cannot stand high pitched whining for girls and over exaggerated men's voices. pretty awful. I'm going to write her name down so I don't have to hear another book read by her.

Revisado: 11-06-23
I was really looking forward to this podcast, but by mid episode 1 and the intro.. the VERY loud commercials and sooooo many of them over and over and over.. I gave up. it made me angry. I'm just going to find another podcast. Playing Bjs wholesale commercials 15 times in a row it HORRIBLE. and why are all the commercials SO LOUD?! VERY disappointed.
