Way too repetitive
Revisado: 03-28-25
I think it was okay at first? For the usual reasons, I chose this book because I found the idea of an optimistic book about being with an alcoholic incredibly compelling, and hopefully useful. But I kept finding myself monitoring the time clock because I literally thought that portions of the book were stuck in a loop. Now I think they were just the same words, in slightly different orders and combinations, repeated over and over. I had to stop listening eventually because I couldn't tolerate hearing another description of her self reflective journey of collaborative transformation; she just kept saying those same words over and over
At its best, though I appreciated hearing some experiences similar to my own, I didn't really find any useful advice, as I was hoping for.

Michigan. To tens of thousands of womyn from around the globe, the word meant not a state in the upper Midwest of the U.S., but a state of mind, a state of freedom. A culture, a community, a revolution. The Land. From 1976 to 2015, the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival was home ground for the lesbian feminist movement. There we strove to embody the principles of matriarchal feminism and bring that wisdom to life in every aspect of the town we created, and the values that guided our lives together.

I missed this
Revisado: 08-25-24
I have missed this space, your voice, the laughter, strength, and tears of our community. Thank you for bringing it back to me, if only for 12 hours. I so deeply appreciate your service to our sisterhood, how bravely and passionately you have cared about, and for us, and how you have modelled sincerity, vulnerability, growth, creativity, and leadership for the rest of us, now, and in the future. Knowing you has been a blessing, as is this book. Thank you, Amazon. <3 TBair

Historia
It is the story of 11-year-old Pecola Breedlove--a black girl in an America whose love for its blond, blue-eyed children can devastate all others--who prays for her eyes to turn blue: so that she will be beautiful, so that people will look at her, so that her world will be different. This is the story of the nightmare at the heart of her yearning and the tragedy of its fulfillment.

beautiful and touching
Revisado: 05-12-22
I loved hearing this excellent book in her own voice, and hope many more will enjoy this same pleasure. I admit it's disappointing to me that a such a talented and accomplished writer doesn't have more or better reviews. I can only imagine this is due to the demographics of audible readers and the innate discomfort of the subject matter. But of course, it should be uncomfortable for all of us; I believe that's much of the point. It never feels contrived or gratuitous, however, and I'm grateful to have been guided through this emotional journey via such striking and beautiful prose. It took me a little while to realize how the Dick and Jane book was used to outline and juxtapose the storyline and characters, and found it brilliant.

i needed to hear this
Revisado: 09-26-17
I'm an open, honest, take-the-plunge, do-er type. But I struggle all day everyday to get it all done and stay sane by the end of the day; I fail regularly. I really needed to hear this. I started it two days ago, finished it today, and already I've made important positive changes in my life. The way she states and reframes my own struggles is particularly poingnat. And the specific changes in strategy she suggests are fantastic. I'm excited to see how my future changes. Thank you!
