Unpredictable
Revisado: 04-05-25
Pleasantly surprised. The plot was interesting and had some unexpected turns. I wish there was more structure in regards of which characters perspective was telling the story because it got confusing at times. Too much happened/ was implied for this to be labeled as a “clean” read - listen. Audio was distracting.

Different
Revisado: 04-03-25
Overall it was a decent story. Personally Im not a fan of the relationships. Nun of them are good examples of what a healthy romantic relationship should be. I know the age gap was normal at the time but it made me feel a bit uncomfortable. My biggest issue with book is that it’s advertised as “clean” and although there aren’t explicit scenes (there is one that comes pretty close) there is a lot implied and frequent descriptions of female anatomy. So reader beware.

Best out of the four. Interesting and unique plot. Like all her books it’s lacking in character development and relationship development but even that was better than the others in the series.

Historia
Originally published in 1778, Evelina is Frances Burney's first and most beloved novel. It was a landmark in the development of the novel of manners and went on to influence such enduringly popular authors as Jane Austen. By turns hilarious and grim, witty and lyrical, the story follows young Evelina as she leaves the seclusion of her country home and enters into late eighteenth-century London society - both its pleasures and its dangers. Life in eighteenth-century England is vividly rendered as Evelina is educated in the ways of the world and, eventually, love.

This book has greatly exceeded my expectations! It’s masterfully written and incredibly funny! For those who don’t know, this was Austen’s favorite book and it is easy to tell why. The recording was excellent. The story is told through letters written by several different characters and the reader of the book changes depending on who wrote the letter. Once you start listening you won’t want to stop!

Exceeded my expectations!
Revisado: 04-02-21
So good! Mary Barton exceeded my expectations! Not quite North and South or Wives and Dughters level but still a great read. If you are a fan of North and South I highly recommend this book. It give a lot more context to the industrial Victorian world and the relationship between the works and the masters and the governments perspective on the matter. As for the story itself, it has a slow start but really picks up and becomes a very exciting read!

Historia
Written at the request of Charles Dickens, North and South is a book about rebellion that poses fundamental questions about the nature of social authority and obedience. Gaskell expertly blends individual feeling with social concern and her heroine, Margaret Hale, is one of the most original creations of Victorian literature. When Margaret Hale's father leaves the Church in a crisis of conscience she is forced to leave her comfortable home in the tranquil countryside of Hampshire....
