Imagine two worlds at war. In one, citizens with jetpacks and ray guns have colonized Venus. In the other, magic reigns supreme, and history turns on swords and spells. Now imagine they have just discovered a third world. Our world. Our timeline of rideshare apps and strip malls is about to become the newest battlefield in the long war between science fiction and fantasy.

fun listen
Revisado: 01-10-22
It was a little hard to follow the jumps from one set of characters to another. The story was fun and the settings were a pleasant change. There were enough twists to keep it interesting and the characters were very likable.

I wanted to like it
Revisado: 02-16-21
The premise was good and I enjoyed the characters, but I could not suspend sufficient amounts of disbelief to enjoy the story. Time traveling heros who can only go to a specific point in time seems far fetched. Puritanical virtues imposed on 15th century Scottland (and kitls are not skirts). Even the scenes of passion seemed unrealistic. Oh, there was also a Renaissance Festival which clearly came only out of someone's dream, possibly a nightmare.

interesting but not captivating

there seemed to be many references to modern institutions in this 14th century setting. it did a void job of providing an interesting story. it also shows some of how times have changed, but it misses on other points.

Historia
Sarah Gilchrist has fled London and a troubled past to join the University of Edinburgh's medical school in 1892, the first year it admits women. She is determined to become a doctor despite the misgivings of her family and society, but Sarah quickly finds plenty of barriers at school itself: professors who refuse to teach their new pupils, male students determined to force out their female counterparts, and - perhaps worst of all - her female peers who will do anything to avoid being associated with a fallen woman.

unexpectedly engaging story

This book was an easy listen. The plot was engaging and there were several unexpected twists. while it has all the normal aspects of a who dun it, the book also shows how society and moral practices have changed.

Revisado: 11-25-20
The action seemed a bit forced. There was one bizarre occurrence after another. Glad to see Florence set out as a real person and a good role model. brought out many of the problems women faced in the 19th century. The unfolding seemed contrived. Still a pleasant listen.
