Historia
Fifteen years after graduation, four old university friends get together to celebrate Luke’s stag party. Tucked away in a remote village in the Lake District, they expect a weekend of real ale, log fires and gentle hikes – but a stag party of locals have other ideas. Unwillingly drawn into one-upmanship and animosity, the four friends find themselves being hunted across unfamiliar ground in a game of deadly consequences. With only one of them guaranteed to survive, old wounds and resentments threaten to tear them apart as much as their pursuers.

A story well-told and well-performed
Revisado: 11-22-24
Dan Howarth's novel concerns four friends who travel to the countryside for a stag party only to find themselves hunted by the locals.
What I think separates Howarth's story from other with similar plots--man hunting man--is his characters. First, in the opening scene Howary deftly draws multiple characters quickly. While I didn't necessarily like all of the characters, I did like following them through their story. Howarth quickly drew me in, made me feel like I'd enjoy hanging out with them at the pub. Second, once the hunt starts, it quickly becomes apparent that the first, most important battle they will fight is the one against themselves. Their lifelong quibbles and grudges become major impediments to their cooperation in dealing with the dangerous situation they've found themselves in. The novel focuses as much on the characters trying to reconcile their long-held hard feelings toward each other as it does their pursuit by the locals. The tension is ratcheted up because, in order to survive the immediate physical danger, they are forced to contend with their genuine attitudes toward each other. Counter-intuitively, the latter grow to feel an equal, if not greater, obstacle to their survival. Because of this setup, the ending feels much stronger than similar stories, as well.
This is a novel about men being hunted but also a race to see if they can grow wise before old. Or dead.
The performer, Aubrey Parsons, feels perfect for this novel. He sounds like he has lived among and knows these characters, their dialects, their personalities. I generally prefer reading to listening to novels. When I do go with an audiobook, I always appreciate when the performer adds something to the story I would not have gotten out of reading it myself. Parson delivers.

Historia
After years of city life, Orla and Shaw Bennett are ready for the quiet of New York's Adirondack mountains — or at least, they think they are. Settling into the perfect farmhouse with their two children, they are both charmed and unsettled by the expanse of their land, the privacy of their individual bedrooms, and the isolation of life a mile from any neighbor.

Good story, great audio performance
Revisado: 01-17-22
I really enjoyed the narrator, Xe Sands. I liked the story but expected a bit more creepiness / scariness. It didn't really deliver that for me, but I did still enjoy the concept as it unfolded throughout the story.

Good story and good audio performance
Revisado: 11-28-21
I liked the story pretty well. The concept was fun. Some of the plot was stereotypical for the type of character presented in Repairman Jack. In fairness, I think had I read the novel when it was released, it would have felt a lot fresher. A bit unfair to look back on it not and see all the common tropes that might not have been as overused back then. Despite some of the plot feeling overly familiar, I enjoyed the novel and thought Joe Barrett's audio performance was really great.

Historia
Alan W. Watts' "message for an age of anxiety" is as powerful today as it was when this modern classic was first published. We spend too much time trying to anticipate and plan for the future, too much time lamenting the past. We often miss the pleasures of the moment in our anxious efforts to ensure the next moment is as enjoyable. Drawing from Eastern philosophy and religion, Watts argues that it is only by acknowledging what we do not and cannot know that we can find something truly worth knowing.

Interesting Concepts
Revisado: 10-16-21
I felt like this was an interesting philosophy that provides a valuable way of looking at things. Not sure I am adopting it as my own life philosophy, and I feel like there are some situations it wouldn't be particularly helpful (but I am also not sure that I misunderstand application of the philosophy, rendering it less useful in certain situations). At any rate, I finished this audiobook almost a week ago and think about it just about every day. Even if I choose not to or lack the understanding to adopt the philosophies it presents, thinking about them versus my own ideas has helped clarify what and how I actually think and has highlighted some areas where my own philosophies are probably not healthy. It has been valuable in forcing me to engage with the ideas Watts presents and test my own against them.

Historia
Ike Randolph has been out of jail for fifteen years, with not so much as a speeding ticket in all that time. But a Black man with cops at the door knows to be afraid. The last thing he expects to hear is that his son Isiah has been murdered, along with Isiah’s white husband, Derek. Ike had never fully accepted his son but is devastated by his loss. Derek’s father Buddy Lee was almost as ashamed of Derek for being gay as Derek was ashamed his father was a criminal. Buddy Lee still has contacts in the underworld, though, and he wants to know who killed his boy.

Welcome to Derry, Maine. It’s a small city, a place as hauntingly familiar as your own hometown. Only in Derry the haunting is real. They were seven teenagers when they first stumbled upon the horror. Now they are grown-up men and women who have gone out into the big world to gain success and happiness. But the promise they made 28 years ago calls them reunite in the same place where, as teenagers, they battled an evil creature that preyed on the city’s children.

Excellent audio performance of a horror classic
Revisado: 09-30-21
I first read It almost 30 years ago. Revisited the novel in audio version. I still love the story and characters, and found the audio version wonderful to listen to. Truly a performance rather than a mere reading. Well worth the time it takes to listen.

Until the End of Time is Brian Greene's breathtaking new exploration of the cosmos and our quest to find meaning in the face of this vast expanse. Greene takes us on a journey from the big bang to the end of time, exploring how lasting structures formed, how life and mind emerged, and how we grapple with our existence through narrative, myth, religion, creative expression, science, the quest for truth, and a deep longing for the eternal.

Interesting study of science and humanity
Revisado: 08-03-21
I've read some reviews that criticize the book for veering from hard science into softer sciences. Not sure if those folks didn't finish the book, or just expected hard science throughout. It gets back to hard science at the end. The middle discusses various facets of humanity--art, religion, language, philosophy, free will, etc.--to show how the author reconciles aspects of humanity that seem to defy science with the hard science. I enjoyed that part of this book as well, and so didn't feel it made the book uneven. The premise given up front involves how long intelligent life might exist in the cosmos, so it seems to necessitate some discussion of what qualifies as intelligent life and how those aspects are or are not governed by physics. I can see how people who expect something different might be disappointed, but I thought it was a fascinating read. I also appreciate that most of the concepts are discussed in plain language, often paired with analogies or metaphor to make the concepts understandable to those of us not well-versed in hard science.

Creepy story of a child in peril
Revisado: 07-24-21
I know some people don't like child protagonists, and some people are averse to any child abuse. If either isn't your thing, this story isn't for you. I thought the story was well-written, a quick, entertaining listen, and darker than I expected it to go. I enjoyed it overall, and thought the audio performance was solid.

Historia
F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic American novel of the Roaring Twenties is beloved by generations of readers and stands as his crowning work. This new audio edition, authorized by the Fitzgerald estate, is narrated by Oscar-nominated actor Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain). Gyllenhaal's performance is a faithful delivery in the voice of Nick Carraway, the Midwesterner turned New York bond salesman, who rents a small house next door to the mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby....

Re-reading classics
Revisado: 07-07-21
Read this in high school, and twenty-plus years later don't remember much that happened, and don't remember enjoying that. Listening to it now, I think it is a pretty brilliant take down of how the rich and powerful families of America view and treat everyone else in the US and in the world. I certainly didn't have the perspective to appreciate it in high school. The plot is slow but worth the payoff. The performance of this audio version is great.
