Historia
One night less than two weeks before Christmas, a single mother is violently assaulted. It’s a brutal crime at the time of year when there should be goodwill to all. When DI Barton begins his investigation, he’s surprised to find the victim is a woman with nothing to hide and no reason for anyone to hurt her. A few days later, the mother of the woman attacked rings the police station. Her granddaughter has drawn a shocking picture. It seems she was looking out of the window when her mother was attacked.

Goodness what a mess. Love the narration as ever but a totally disconnected story line. Hard to review without spoilers. Essentially the worst by far in an otherwise great series.
Shame

Historia
In 1994, an aspiring young cold-case investigator in California’s East Bay, Paul Holes, puts aside trying to solve the Golden State Killer case as he waits for science to catch up. Paul returns to an old file cabinet at the back of the forensic lab to look for another cold case he can work—something with DNA. He finds one. The 1978 murder of a married mother who went for a morning jog in a nearby park. The original investigators believed that a serial killer named Phillip Hughes was responsible; they just couldn’t prove it.

Moving and at times very disturbing
Revisado: 08-26-21
An incredibly moving narrative of “cold” cases, though the victim’s are not forgotten. Wonderful producing, writing and narration including the voices of the relatives.
The predators, as they really should be called are, I believe, fairly represented without completely demonising clearly very disturbed people.
It will always raise the debate on the death penalty or not. I shall not comment on that.
Be prepared to be upset by the description of the crimes - very painful to hear but necessary.
And of course-let’s not forget the courage and determination of the investigators who try to give families some peace and closure.

Historia
On the brink of defeat, Hitler commissioned 10,000 V2s - ballistic rockets that carried a one-ton warhead at three times the speed of sound, which he believed would win the war. Dr Rudi Graf who, along with his friend Werner von Braun, had once dreamt of sending a rocket to the moon, now finds himself in November 1944 in a bleak seaside town in Occupied Holland, launching V2s against London. No one understands the volatile, deadly machine better than Graf, but his disillusionment with the war leads to him being investigated for sabotage.

Very disappointing. Disjointed and very "thin".
Revisado: 10-17-20
In the credits, Harris states it was written during the lockdown and maybe that is the explanation for this misfire. I am a big fan and pre-ordered this, and so am even more disappointed.
The usual mix of interesting historically accurate (?) events and some character development - though a lot less than usual. It was all so disjointed. All of sudden I am fast-forwarded by a few months and no explanation of what had happened in-between times. It felt like the book had to be drastically edited or it was a short story that was bloated out to be a full novel?
If you're a fan then you will buy it anyway, if your not I really wouldn't use any credits.
I'll go and sit in the corner and be sad for a while now. :(

Engaging and (almost) believable

A post apocalyptic world that’s similar to the dark ages. Throw in a murder mystery and have Robert Harris write it. Nearly perfect.
No spoilers but to say there a few points where it lets itself down but certainly well worth a listen.
Reminds me very much of Pullman’s His Dark Materials stories.
Excellent narration.

The next big thing in artificial intelligence is here. Codenamed Cronus, the machine is capable of having its own thoughts and ideas - an absolute dream come true, until it wasn’t. When Cronus responds with the word “No” to a specific task it is assigned, Anagnorisis Technologies brings in Gilles Guattari to investigate. His combined background in psychiatry, psychology, and AI research makes him their best hope in evaluating Cronus, and determining if the machine is only malfunctioning or if it has become something more.

Agree with other listeners
Revisado: 09-12-19
I was willing to go with the self serving “look what I know about consciousness” first quarter as the story began to pick up after then . The beginning of the second part also was promising with a complex (if very contrived) relationship storyline. However it then descended into an action caper with no real connection to the previous sections. Then with 20 minutes to the end there is a very cryptic (but not clever) ending. Which I still don’t understand!
Huge potential thrown away by severe editing, rushing or just inability to weave threads into a compelling and/or satisfactory conclusion.

Historia
The debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives. Every day the same. Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life - as she sees it - is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

Bridget Jones meets Miss Marpel!
Revisado: 05-13-15
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Well really this is for people who want to watch someone's personal lives crash and tumble into a morass of, hate to say it, patheticness! Really this seems a tragic romance/early life crisis for a divorcee and a serially unfaithful woman. One can either empathise or enjoy some schadenfreude, but relax and enjoy a gripping novel... nope.
As my headline says I feel like I'm listening to Bridget Jones. Amusing and appealing in its place, but this novel "isnt as advertised".
Would you ever listen to anything by Paula Hawkins again?
Unlikely.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
Its not the narrators fault - although her attempt at a male policeman is, I'm afraid to say laughable. She sounds like a children's TV presenter.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
In all honesty - no. I'm 4 hours in and keep trying and assuming the drunken, immature, self centred ego's will become background noise. But they get worse. This "aint no" thriller.
Any additional comments?
I don't like criticising anyones creative exploits - I certainly couldn't write a novel - email is hard enough! But I did want to counterbalance the amazing reviews this book has had. The sample you hear is pretty much the rest of the book.
A real missed opportunity and an unfortunate start to a writer's career.

Perhaps it wasn't from our time, perhaps it wasn't even from our universe, but the arrival of the 300-kilometer long stone was the answer to humanity's desperate plea to end the threat of nuclear war. Inside the deep recesses of the stone lies Thistledown: the remnants of a human society, versed in English, Russian and Chinese. The artifacts of this familiar people foretell a great Death caused by the ravages of war, but the government and scientists are unable to decide how to use this knowledge.

Very confusing and disjointed
Revisado: 10-31-14
Is there anything you would change about this book?
There is an excruciating amount of detail on the geography, technology and peoples of the world. So much so that even after 5 hours Im horribly confused on who is who, what technology is what. Im very used to technology and sci-fi but this one leaves me muddled.
Has Eon turned you off from other books in this genre?
The endless descriptions!
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
Performance is good but check out the sample to see if you like his voice. Very deep and gravelly.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Yes - visuals of this would make it so much easier to follow. Also I assume it would be abridged!
Any additional comments?
maybe its me, but give this one a miss, there are so many other classics out there.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes tales are rightly ranked among the seminal works of mystery and detective fiction. Included in this collection are all four full-length Holmes novels and more than forty short masterpieces - from the inaugural adventure A Study in Scarlet to timeless favorites like “The Speckled Band” and more. At the center of each stands the iconic figure of Holmes - brilliant, eccentric, and capable of amazing feats of deductive reasoning.

Historia
Sam Dryden, retired special forces, lives a quiet life in a small town on the coast of Southern California. While out on a run in the middle of the night, a young girl runs into him on the seaside boardwalk. Barefoot and terrified, she's running from a group of heavily armed men with one clear goal - to kill the fleeing child. After Dryden helps her evade her pursuers, he learns that the 11-year-old, for as long as she can remember, has been kept in a secret prison by forces within the government. But she doesn't know much beyond her own name, Rachel.

Tech/psych thriller with some heart.
Revisado: 09-22-14
Where does Runner rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Given I've listened to so many I cant rate it in the very best. The character development is shallow for instance, however surprisingly for this genre I did feel connected to the main characters and their relationship. Its an emotional ending (wont say happy or indeed sad) which again is surprising.
Great narration from Raul Esparza as usual.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Rachel and Sam - there arent that many others!
Which scene was your favorite?
The last.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Yes but I wont say!
