Historia
Though he’s officially retired from the Navajo Tribal Police, Joe Leaphorn occasionally helps his former colleagues Jim Chee and Bernie Manuelito crack particularly puzzling crimes. But there is that rare unsolved investigation that haunts every lawman, including the legendary Leaphorn. Joe still hasn’t let go of his “last case”—a mystery involving a priceless Navajo rug that was supposedly destroyed in a fire. Nine years later, what looks like the same one-of-a-kind rug turns up in a magazine spread, and the man who showed Joe the photo has gone missing.

Wonderful storytelling
Revisado: 11-16-24
I really enjoyed all of it, especially the slyly humorous tone of the narrator as the story weaves a rich tapestry of character, folktales, high desert atmosphere and mystery. The relationship between Leaphorn and the Hmong refugee is especially rich.

I enjoy Laurie King’s books but this narrator’s voice was grating. Sorry I didn’t return it immediately.

What you would expect
Revisado: 06-02-24
Hard to review this book. I was informed by and enjoyed much of it but by the end the some themes seemed very repetitious and I was eager to get it over with. If I’d had it in book form I would have skimmed some chapters. Can’t do that with audio unfortunately.

Historia
In this intimate and funny collection of essays on the sometimes confusing, sometimes poignant, sometimes hilarious condition of being a woman over 60, Susan Moon keeps her sense of humor and she keeps her listener fully engaged. Among the pieces she has included here are an essay on the gratitude she feels for her weakening bones; observations on finding herself both an orphan and a matriarch following the death of her mother; musings on her tendency to regret the past.

Very relatable
Revisado: 01-23-24
Loved the authors voice, insight and humor taking us into the process of aging. Loved the specificity of some chapters, ie. Zen practice with aging knees. Found myself saying and thinking “me too” with delight in not being alone in thinking and experiencing these things. Highly recommended.

Boring. Didn’t finish it. The reader is good but all the details about inter-tribal warfare and politics were not. I really wanted to like this book but it seems like it’s aimed at middle school students.

Historia
In a case that spans 20 years, Harry Bosch links the bullet from a recent crime to a file from 1992, the killing of a young female photographer during the L.A. riots. Harry originally investigated the murder, but it was then handed off to the Riot Crimes Task Force and never solved. Now Bosch's ballistics match indicates that her death was not random violence, but something more personal, and connected to a deeper intrigue. Like an investigator combing through the wreckage after a plane crash, Bosch searches for the "black box", the one piece of evidence that will pull the case together.

Historia
Four years before Nina Totenberg was hired at NPR, where she cemented her legacy as a prizewinning reporter, and nearly twenty-two years before Ruth Bader Ginsburg was appointed to the Supreme Court, Nina called Ruth. A reporter for The National Observer, Nina was curious about Ruth’s legal brief, asking the Supreme Court to do something revolutionary: declare a law that discriminated “on the basis of sex” to be unconstitutional. That call launched a remarkable, nearly fifty-year friendship.

10% RBG 90% Nina
Revisado: 08-19-23
I wanted to like this book a lot more than I did.
This is really Nina Totenberf's autobiography. It’s a fascinating look into the world of the Washington power elite and friendships among women who made it into that world on their own merits but there’s disappointingly little about RBG. I found the author's reflections on the difficulties women of her (my) generation encountered in entering that world and the power of female friendships interesting and encouraging but the implicit privilege of her worldview is maddening and more than a little tone-deaf.

The Best So Far In A Very Entertaining Series
Revisado: 06-14-23
Highly entertaining, plot with just the right amount of twists, and a very vivid description of what it’s like to be on a China tour. The reader is excellent; she has mastered the art of voicing various characters and manages believable accents, including Chinese. Totally enjoyable.
