Too much personal commentary on current political
- De BF Palo Alto en 07-21-22
Surprise!!!... It's a political piece.
Revisado: 01-05-25
While I was really into the historical information, I didn't come to this book/lecture looking for something to shape my modern day political views. Regardless if I do agree with them, or not, it's a pretty slimy tactic to take.
I have really enjoyed a lot of these series, but this is a major turn off for me. I do not care which "side" of the political spectrum you are trying to push, but neither are welcome.
This was presented as a series of lectures on the plague, not your opinions on COVID-19, vaccines, etc. I do not care about your opinions on those topics, even if I do agree with them.
Now I know to avoid this speaker and approach all of the lectures in "Great Courses" series with suspicion. What a disappointment.

Historia
There has been much said about Dusty Rhodes, the 'American Dream', over the years by both his fans and peers. Aside from the frequent fictional prose penned by wrestling magazine journalists and internet smart marks that run rumor-mill websites, however, there has not been much written about him. Until now. With the exception of a select few, there has been no bigger name or personality in the annals of pro wrestling history than Dusty Rhodes.

Great memories.
Revisado: 11-26-24
Really enjoyed this one. The way in which the story was told felt almost conversational.
The performance was well done, but nearly every name you used to mispronounce before the internet is mispronounced here. I don't blame the guy reading, that blame fall to whoever was producing.
Regardless, I came way from this feeling very nostalgic with a smile on my face.

Historia
Macho Man: The Untamed, Unbelievable Life of Randy Savage is the sensational, definitive biography of the WrestleMania headlining, Spider-Man fighting, Slim Jim snapping, minor league baseball playing American original: Randy Savage. Savage, a WWE wrestling hall of famer, was an A-list celebrity who sat atop the entertainment universe for much of the '80s and '90s. His outfits were as flamboyant as anything worn by Liberace, Elton John, or Prince. His charisma surpassed Hulk Hogan's and is rivaled only by "Stone Cold" Steve Austin and The Rock.

Really enjoyed this book. I made the mistake of reading the negative reviews and let them color my perspective at the beginning, but, I'm here to say that I couldn't disagree more.
Enjoyed the different voices, my only issue is the mispronunciations of the different names. I don't really blame the preformer, I blame who ever was producing him.

Reinhard Heydrich is widely recognized as one of the great iconic villains of the 20th century, an appalling figure even within the context of the Nazi leadership. Chief of the Nazi Criminal Police, the SS Security Service, and the Gestapo, ruthless overlord of Nazi-occupied Bohemia and Moravia, and leading planner of the "Final Solution," Heydrich played a central role in Hitler's Germany.

In just four weeks in the summer of 1941 the German Wehrmacht wrought unprecedented destruction on four Soviet armies, conquering central Ukraine and killing or capturing three quarters of a million men. This was the Battle of Kiev - one of the largest and most decisive battles of World War II and, for Hitler and Stalin, a battle of crucial importance. For the first time, David Stahel charts the battle's dramatic course and aftermath.

Historia
Ballyhoo! The Roughhousers, Con Artists, and Wildmen Who Invented Professional Wrestling is a history of professional wrestling’s formative period in the U.S., from roughly 1874 to 1941, and the contested interplay of wrestlers and promoters who built the “sport” as we know it. During this period, the major conventions that would define wrestling to the present day were perfected and codified, as wrestling morphed from a rough sport practiced on farms and at town gatherings to melodramatic mass entertainment that reliably drew large crowds in cities across the nation.

Great source of information; inconsistent audio production.
Revisado: 06-13-24
If you're interested in the history of wrestling, from the founding pioneer days, till it begins to take the shape of what we know now, this is the book for you.
My only complaint, and it's really minor compared to the abundance of information and research provided, is the inconsistency of the audio production. It is very obvious when the audio was recorded during different sessions. It can be extremely jarring when it happens mid sentence.
Otherwise, I can't recommend this book enough.

Powerful... I know that's cliche.
Revisado: 04-19-24
What a powerful story. I know that is a cliche to say, but this story really makes you appreciate what you had growing up. Even it it was terrible... Chances are, as bad as it was(and my youth was really bad,) this story will shine a light on some little things that you missed and didn't appreciate at the time. Some things that you took for granted and never realized that some people were raised without.
Really looking forward to the next book!

Shorter, but fun!
Revisado: 04-10-24
This audiobook is quite a bit shorter than what I typically listen to, but it was a great listen! It hits all the high points and doesn't overstay it's welcome.
For some reason, I had put off listening to it for a while, but it was well worth my time. Speaking of time, it just flew by... Something about the narrator's voice is calming and completely non offensive.
It's a great listen, full of lots of game info. It managed to make me nostalgic for the simpler times of the 8 & 16 bit era. So much so that I ended up looking for a retro themed Indy game to play. You can't ask for much more than that!
