Historia
A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

Narration drew me in
Revisado: 02-06-25
I kept seeing a lot of people recommend this audiobook and thought I would give it a try although it’s not something I would normally read.
The narrator drew me into the story and kept me interested. I am not a gamer and had a difficult time following the strategy and finer details of the game. But I enjoyed listening nonetheless.

Repetitive words and purple prose
Revisado: 02-01-25
I wanted to like the series but often got distracted by the repetitive use of words, such as “down, down, down.” Was there a significance to the use of three action words? It became so predictable that it took me out of the story.
The use of purple prose or tangential paths often led me on a path so far away from the main point that I would start to doze. Once the action would start again I could actually get back into the story.
I really enjoyed Manon’s arch. Her transformation was truly inspiring.

Plot gaps
Revisado: 01-05-25
I really wanted to like this. I have been searching for a good fantasy series and I like vampire stories It felt like a limited perspective but it was so limited in places that it felt like the narrator was holding onto information that left plot gaps. I won’t be moving onto the next book.

Historia
Only the extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya—the exceptional, the empowered, the Elites. The powers these Elites have possessed for decades were graciously gifted to them by the Plague, though not all were fortunate enough to both survive the sickness and reap the reward. Those born Ordinary are just that—ordinary. And when the king decreed that all Ordinaries be banished to preserve his Elite society, lacking an ability suddenly became a crime—making Paedyn Gray a felon by fate and a thief by necessity.

Too many similarities to Hunger Games without the depth of plot, characters and use of language that I loved so much in the original novel.

Good narrator.
Revisado: 07-07-24
I Enjoyed the narrator for this book more than the first and third in the series. Finding it difficult to stay focused on the third but trying my best.
I enjoyed the idea of community between the roommates living in the house as someone who also grew up in a similar situation. Not everyone has family but as they learned, life teaches us to be prepared for that sucker punch.
I was expecting a plot twist from the protagonist’s past to show up but it didn’t happen.

Historia
Real Americans begins on the precipice of Y2K in New York City, when twenty-two-year-old Lily Chen, an unpaid intern at a slick media company, meets Matthew. Matthew is everything Lily is not: easygoing and effortlessly attractive, a native East Coaster and, most notably, heir to a vast pharmaceutical empire. Lily couldn't be more different: flat-broke, raised in Tampa, the only child of scientists who fled Mao’s Cultural Revolution. Despite all this, Lily and Matthew fall in love.

Narrator so flat and mechanical that I can’t finish book
Revisado: 05-22-24
I have pushed through listening to audiobooks that had distracting narrators in the past. I generally give it my best to finish books, but this narration was so flat and mechanical sounding that I had to stop. It’s unfortunate.

Narration was a distraction for me
Revisado: 07-17-23
Maybe if I read it myself I would have enjoyed it more, I’m not sure or did I wait until I was too old to read it for the first time? It’s possible that it’s just the wrong timing but I couldn’t finish the story. I’ll try the book again another time.

Narration ruined it
Revisado: 07-09-23
The narration was mismatched in voice and tone. In an attempt to sound cold and unemotional, it just created a dissonance. At the very least, make the characters sound human.

Skillful narration and poignant writing
Revisado: 07-09-23
The narration enhanced my experience as I journeyed through the story, with tone and skillful storytelling of the narrator's voice capturing the nuances of each character and immersing me in the narrative.
The writing was poignant and touched on themes of individuals who have suffered trauma and are dealing with the emotional impact while going through a transformative experience. I appreciated the humor and gentle approach when it was necessary.
It touches on work culture and the “outsider.” There are many who are suffering from isolation, loneliness, social anxiety, depression, disabilities, etc who are treated like an outsider. It took meaningful and authentic connections with Raymond to make a difference in her journey.

I wanted to like but
Revisado: 02-27-20
This was difficult for me because I loved the first book audiobook. The narration on this just kept throwing me off. It just seemed slow and choppy. It paused at the wrong times I felt like the story wasn’t moving along when it should be or it wasn’t exciting at times when it should be. I think if I were reading it myself I would have liked it more or if it had a different narrator. But, with this narrator I didn’t want to listen to it at all. I know that’s harsh but I’m sorry, that was my experience.
