Historia
Loretta Thurwar and Hamara “Hurricane Staxxx” Stacker are the stars of Chain-Gang All-Stars, the cornerstone of CAPE, or Criminal Action Penal Entertainment, a highly-popular, highly-controversial, profit-raising program in America’s increasingly dominant private prison industry. It’s the return of the gladiators and prisoners are competing for the ultimate prize: their freedom.

The next logical step in our modern penal system

This book caused me to think about incarceration, particularly when it is discovered that someone has been unjustly imprisoned. Our fascination with MMA and UFC events will likely progress since boxing cannot take it as far.

Historia
In an alternate 2009, the United States has been a second-rate power for a quarter of a century, ever since Argentina’s victory in the Falkland’s War thanks to their development of “psychopigments.” Created as weapons, these colorful chemicals can produce almost any human emotion upon contact, and they have been embraced in the US as both pharmaceutical cure-alls and popular recreational drugs. Black market traders illegally sell everything from Blackberry Purple (which causes terror) to Sunshine Yellow (which delivers happiness).

Storyline line was imaginative

Listened to this book after a recommendation by comedian Anthony Jeselnick. This is another book that would have served me better by reading it directly. Trying to follow the references to the color effects was tough but aside from a protagonist who seems invincible, the story was gripping while driving

Funny and doom-drenched, The Employees chronicles the fate of the Six-Thousand Ship. The human and humanoid crew members complain about their daily tasks in a series of staff reports and memos. When the ship takes on a number of strange objects from the planet New Discovery, the crew becomes strangely and deeply attached to them, even as tensions boil toward mutiny, especially among the humanoids.

The format was interesting as an audiobook

I should have read the book directly to get a feel for the chapters, some of which were just a few words particularly toward the end. I think I shorted myself on the experience by listening to the audiobook

Historia
The second novel by Donna Tartt, best-selling author of The Goldfinch (winner of the 2014 Pulitzer Prize), The Little Friend is a grandly ambitious and utterly riveting novel of childhood, innocence, and evil. The setting is Alexandria, Mississippi, where one Mother’s Day a little boy named Robin Cleve Dufresnes was found hanging from a tree in his parents’ yard. Twelve years later Robin’s murder is still unsolved. So Robin’s sister Harriet - unnervingly bright and insufferably determined - sets out to unmask his killer.

Overall story was engaging. I could feel the heat and humidity of the Deep South while the kids investigated

I didn’t like the ending - felt quite abrupt. Getting sick from being in the tank was a nice touch though.
