Historia
In 2003, the Special Forces soldiers entered an area later called "the most dangerous place in Afghanistan". Here, where the line between civilians and armed zealots was indistinct, they illustrated the Afghan proverb "I destroy my enemy by making him my friend." Fry recounts how they were seen as welcome guests rather than invaders. Soon after their deployment ended, the Pech Valley reverted to turmoil. Their success was never replicated.

A sincere account of what we all hoped it would be.
Revisado: 04-23-25
I was very surprised about this book. I have listened to alot of war memoirs. I can say this one was very touching... it pulled at those heart strings. Not so much a run and gun, definitely not a "kill them all" account. I loved that it was read by the author and he did great. This book definitely makes you think of what could have happened if ....... well I'll stop there.
I really enjoyed hearing about your experience in Afghanistan Mr. Fry. thank you

Revisado: 04-14-25
I listened to this on audible. Read by the author... and sometimes great writers aren't very good narrators. Definitely not the case here. Amazing story. Hopefully someday there is a follow up book because it sounds like there is a lot more to this whole story.

Good to Go is Constance's powerful, firsthand account of his three tours of duty as a member of America's most elite, razor-sharp stealth fighting force. It is a breathtaking memoir of harrowing missions and covert special-ops - from the floodplains of the Mekong Delta to the beaches of the South China Sea - that places the listener in the center of bloody ambushes and devastating firefights. But Constance's extraordinary adventure goes even farther - beyond 'Nam.

What a story. It is so much more then just a run and gun memoir.... no offense to all the other great reads out there. I've listened many war memoirs, many Vietnam ones. This is one is definitely on my top 5. Incredible story, great narrorattion, definitely the best navy seal if not the best Vietnam memoir I've listened to.

Historia
A rarely frank account of the US infantry experience in northern Europe, A Foot Soldier for Patton takes the listener from the beaches of Normandy through the giddy drive across France to the brutal battles on the Westwall, in the Ardennes, and finally to the conquest of Germany itself. Patton's army is best known for dashing armored attacks; its commander combining the firepower of tanks with their historic lineage as cavalry. But when the Germans stood firm, the greatest fighting was done by Patton's long undersung infantry.

What a fantastic surprise, I thought I have listened or read all the favorites. This is a great story from WW2. It's heartbreaking...heartless, funny, sad, and one that will be on your recommendation list. I don't want to comment to much and give away spoilers. Narration was great! Heller nailed it!

Historia
The United States Army drafted Steve in 1969. Like many young men, he was unaware of the consequences of being drafted until being sent to Vietnam. Although his father was also drafted into the Armed Forces for World War II, nothing could have prepared Steve for the year of duty to come. Growing up in a large family, he developed a talent early on for storytelling. His accounts of Vietnam will have you imagining him sitting across a campfire telling his story.

Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

Revisado: 08-15-24
Absolutely amazing! I drive many hours a day and I listen to audio books. I love non-fiction. This one is very well written, and the narrator did great. The story is almost unbelievable, I listened to it in one day, I couldn't stop. I am big fan of soldiers memoirs, and "ship wreck" stories. This one is definitely in my top 5..... and I've listened to alot of them. Shackleton... I doubt we'll see someone of his caliber again

Historia
The ordeal of the whaleship Essex was an event as mythic in the nineteenth century as the sinking of the Titanic was in the twentieth. In 1819 the Essex left Nantucket for the South Pacific with 20 crew members aboard. In the middle of the South Pacific the ship was rammed and sunk by an angry sperm whale. The crew drifted for more than 90 days in three tiny whaleboats, succumbing to weather, hunger, and disease and ultimately turning to drastic measures in the fight for survival.

I really like how this book more or less jumps into the story while also introducing who are the "players" involved but doesn't go into huge back story with while still doing enough to have a good feel of the characters. Great narrator too.... Good voice, didn't over do it, and did an outstanding job

Historia
The mutiny on HMS Bounty, in the South Pacific on 28 April 1789, is one of history's truly great stories - a tale of human drama, intrigue and adventure of the highest order - and in the hands of Peter FitzSimons it comes to life as never before. Commissioned by the Royal Navy to collect breadfruit plants from Tahiti and take them to the West Indies, the Bounty's crew found themselves in a tropical paradise. Five months later, they did not want to leave.

Revisado: 07-27-24
Great narrator. If you are into early maritime exploring/ventures, this definitely one you should hear. It amazes me in what us as humans are capable of.... good and bad. Amazing story, and to think it actually happened. I do suggest maybe reading or listening to something about Captin Cook before this one though, it just makes the story that much better. I got lucky and happened to just finish a book called The wide wide sea... or something like that. Cook isn't in Mutiny on the Bounty. This takes place a little after his demise. I don't want to give away any spoilers. Great book, I highly recommend

Historia
In August 1897, the young Belgian commandant Adrien de Gerlache set sail for a three-year expedition aboard the good ship Belgica with dreams of glory. His destination was the uncharted end of the earth: the icy continent of Antarctica. But de Gerlache’s plans to be first to the magnetic South Pole would swiftly go awry. After a series of costly setbacks, the commandant faced two bad options: turn back in defeat and spare his men the devastating Antarctic winter, or recklessly chase fame by sailing deeper into the freezing waters.

Historia
Things I’ll Never Forget is the story of a young high school graduate in 1965 who faces being drafted into the Army or volunteering for the Marine Corps. These are his memories of funny times, disgusting times and deadly times. The author kept a journal for an entire year; therefore many of the dates, times and places are accurate. The rest is based on memories that are forever tattooed on his brain. This is not a pro-war book, nor is it anti-war. It is the true story of what the Marine Corps was like in the late 1960’s.
