Historia
In an unnamed city slick with rain, Charles Unwin toils as a clerk at an imperious detective agency. His job: writing reports on cases solved by the palindromic Detective Travis Sivart. When Sivart goes missing and his supervisor is murdered, Unwin is promoted to detective, a rank for which he is woefully unprepared. His only guidance comes from his sleepy new assistant and the pithy yet profound Manual of Detection.

Absurd gumshoe fiction of the best kind
Revisado: 10-07-24
If you liked The Naked Lunch, The 13th Floor, Buckaroo Banzai Across the 10th Dimension, The Scribbler, etc then I think this is the book for you! Absurd but so damned consistent. Very very entertaining!

Historia
Somewhere on the frontier between thought and reality exists the Discworld, a parallel time and place that might sound and smell very much like our own, but which looks completely different. Particularly as it’s carried though space on the back of a giant turtle (sex unknown). It plays by different rules. But then, some things are the same everywhere. The Disc’s very existence is about to be threatened by a strange new blight: the world’s first tourist, upon whose survival rests the peace and prosperity of the land.

My first foray into discworld
Revisado: 06-18-24
I know. I’m very late to a well beloved series and a well beloved author. It was entertaining, and I’m going to keep reading this series. I’m not a big fan of comedy generally, but this was entertaining enough that it got a rating. I’m going to give this series the benefit of the doubt, but I hope the characters and situations develop beyond what I’ve read here.

Historia
After battling the impossible, Zélie and Amari have finally succeeded in bringing magic back to the land of Orïsha. But the ritual was more powerful than they could’ve imagined, reigniting the powers of not only the maji, but of nobles with magic ancestry, too. Now, Zélie struggles to unite the maji in an Orïsha where the enemy is just as powerful as they are. But when the monarchy and military unite to keep control of Orïsha, Zélie must fight to secure Amari's right to the throne and protect the new maji from the monarchy's wrath.

I really wanted to love this
Revisado: 04-23-24
For me I found that there really wasn’t any character growth or change. Everything that challenged the characters was either telegraphed, or the same mechanism of missed connection. I enjoyed this well enough to finish it, and the narration was excellent, but it just doesn’t quite satisfy enough for me to rave about it.

This book builds so well on the first, lots of great character development, lots of new elements that really work well together. Can’t wait for the final book!

Surprisingly Profound
Revisado: 02-14-24
While I miss Mr. Lowell’s voice from the old days, the narrator does an excellent job. This story is rounding out a character arc (well series of arcs) that is worth to be ready by anyone looking for a model against which to evaluate their own character. In particular this book handles the little details of life and leadership with sincerity and integrity. Well done Sar, very well done.

This wasn’t for me
Revisado: 07-21-23
I picked the book because of the narrator, and she did a great job. For me this book has been a slog through terrible people in a terrible circumstance being terrible to each other. The book is well written, but I just couldn’t take anymore of the story. It was like an early Stephen King novel without any of the supernatural elements or otherwise interesting characters for me. You might like it, but it wasn’t for me.

Revisado: 06-13-23
If there was one aspect of this universe that I wanted to explore more, it was the Presgar translators. This gives and gives and gives, very engaging characters that were expertly brought to life by the performances of the narrator. And now,,,, well now I need more, especially about the AIs and the Geck!

Not what I expected, worth every second
Revisado: 05-29-23
It’s more than a six hour ad, although it feels that way at times. Great history, like a long conversation at the adult table. About halfway through the “isn’t the red rooster so amazing” vibes dissipates and becomes more about context, history, culture, and that’s when it shines.

Stay with this one
Revisado: 05-24-23
I love Tchaikovsky’s writing. This series and in particular this book was a challenge. Every time I was sure the plot was about to fall apart into the many threads like a disheveled mess, he ties it back together with delicate power. This is one of the pieces of fiction that is such a deep reflection of us, of people, and yet it doesn’t get lost in the allegories. It’s up there with all of my favorite Golden Age sci fi classics. Well done sir, well done.
