From city streets where secrets are bartered for gold to forests teeming with fabled beasts, Suyi Davies Okungbowa's sweeping epic of forgotten magic and violent conquests continues in this richly drawn fantasy inspired by the pre-colonial empires of West Africa.
There is no peace in the season of the Red Emperor.
Traumatized by their escape from Bassa, Lilong and Danso have found safety in a vagabond colony on the edge of the emperor’s control. But time is running out on their refuge. A new bounty makes every person a threat, and whispers of magic have roused those eager for their own power.
Lilong is determined to return the Diwi—the ibor heirloom—to her people. It’s the only way to keep it safe from Esheme’s insatiable desire. The journey home will be long, filled with twists and treachery, unexpected allies and fabled enemies.
But surviving the journey is the least of their problems.
Something ancient and uncontrollable awakens. Trouble heads for Bassa, and the continent of Oon will need more than ibor to fix what's coming.

The red Emperor is a great villian. she has no conscience and thinks leadership and faer mean the same thing. she's the first child murderer I've seen revel in her wrong doing. she's written so well that I always enjoy seeing what new travesty she'll do that will create more enemies.
Overall I loved this book and hope the 3rd installment cones sooner rather than later.
Absolutely fantastic afro fantasy

characterizations of the people was good, the narration of the the thoughts, asides and action narration ranged from monotoned to mis-pronunciation with perfect diction that robbed even the bloodiest scenes of any emotional weight. I just wanted to be done with it. I didn't care which, if any, died ... I didn't care what revelations were made (because none had the real wisdom to see the damage they had or would do) ... and I didn't care whether or not they achieved their selfish, poorly reasoned goals. There must be at least one more book coming, but ... I just don't have the energy to care what happens to the characters because, well ... so many were unreasonably mean without self-reflection or ultimate consequence against their person for their part in the chaos, that I just couldn't root for any of them: sort of a passive-aggressive, African version of Game of Thrones, but with no Arya or Tyrion to bring clarity and strength. Listening to people not give their full reasoning for their position, having that lack of knowledge affect another's decision making, people unrepentant unless or until someone died for their misguided deeds... it's too frustrating to read as an escape from the frustrations of seeing real people be self-unaware. I hope others enjoy the third book, but ... I won't be one of them: i have no emotional connection to the characters and their lying, passive aggressive behavior as they trapse through overly describe flora and fauna. Meh.
I just wanted it to be over
