AI Voice Is Not Ready
Revisado: 09-06-24
The story was fine. Knowing the area well was difficult for me to get into the story. Singapore, MI no longer exists and the surrounding areas are nothing like what the author describes but that was fine, it is fiction. I felt that end was rushed and some plot lines were not addressed but it was a perfectly good light summer read.
The AI narration was awful. It was stilted and odd with lots of mispronunciations and emphasis on the wrong words. And strangely enough the voice sometimes sounded as if it had a sore throat. I found myself having to sort through the narration to understand the tone of most scenes.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

The writer has a tender, lyrical style which makes this a sweet but substantive read. I was struck by how many times the events reminded me of the time we live in.

Wonderful read
Revisado: 11-23-23
Once again, I finish another August Snow novel feeling pleased and exhilarated. The series is tight and each book is well-paced. The Michigan/Detroit references are on point. They are nice Easter eggs for a native Detroiter. I can’t wait for the next one!

Historia
When the body of an anonymous young Hispanic woman dressed as Queen Marie Antoinette is dredged from the Detroit River, the Detroit Police Department wants the case closed out fast. Wayne County coroner Dr. Bobby Falconi gives the woman’s photo to his old pal August Snow, insisting August show it around his native Mexicantown. August’s good friend Elena recognizes the woman immediately. Her story is one the authorities don’t want getting around - and she’s not the only young woman to have disappeared during an ICE raid only to turn up dead a few weeks later.

Great story about harsh truths
Revisado: 03-25-23
This was a well written crime drama. I especially enjoyed the supporting characters like Elena and her husband. It was a vivid portrayal of Mexicantown and the surrounding areas. It deftly described the dichotomy of the diversity of SE Michigan and the dangerous hate groups throughout the state. Everyone I know, knows to avoid certain towns and author Jones brings the reader in on it while telling a compelling story about humanity, race and justice.

Historia
Opal is a fiercely independent young woman pushing against the grain in her style and attitude, Afro-punk before that term existed. Coming of age in Detroit, she can’t imagine settling for a 9-to-5 job—despite her unusual looks, Opal believes she can be a star. So when the aspiring British singer/songwriter Neville Charles discovers her at a bar’s amateur night, she takes him up on his offer to make rock music together for the fledgling Rivington Records.

This is what a fictional rock band biography should be. It left me feeling like I knew Opal and Nev, like I understood their place in pop culture. I highly recommend.

I love this book so much. The story was engaging and written in a way that made me want to hang out with these characters. Each one was so distinct, it made me want to keep going. I read book 2 as well and was disappointed to find no book 3. Of course, Bahni Turpin is the best narrator anyone could ask for. Please someone get book 3 released and let’s keep going with this series. It’s literally one of the few things making this era bearable.

Why Is There No PDF?
Revisado: 12-08-14
What would have made Wheat Belly Total Health better?
The narration refers to appendices, yet there is no accompanying PDF. So I'm looking at the book but I'm also going to have to buy a physical copy so I can see the necessary information. That is super annoying.

This book changed my business
Revisado: 11-21-10
I was/am a struggling entrepreneur and I didn't have any notion of what I should do to better my business. This book through it's thoughtful and thorough examination of three HBS graduates made me understand what is necessary to achieve the kind of success I desire. I like the narration (using two different voices) and I love the content. No, it isn't like a recipe from a cookbook but it does give you very detailed ideas of what you should be doing for your business. I realized after getting half-way through the book that I was think much too small and that I needed more study in the business. As it stands, my business, in my estimation will do much much better due, in part, to this book.

After a decade spent in isolation in the Ugandan jungles thinking about stuff, David Cross has written his first book. Known for roles on the small screen such as "never-nude" Tobias Funke on Arrested Development and the role of "David" in Mr. Show with Bob and David, as well as a hugely successful stand-up routine full of sharp-tongued rants and rages, Cross has carved out his place in American comedy.

Historia
Master Quilter Sylvia Bergstrom Compson treasures an antique quilt called by three names: Birds in the Air, after its pattern; the Runaway Quilt, after the woman who sewed it; and the Elm Creek Quilt, after the place to which its maker longed to return. That quilter was Joanna, a fugitive slave who traveled by the Underground Railroad to reach safe haven in 1859 at Elm Creek Farm.

Not What I Expected, Much Better
Revisado: 01-03-10
I was expecting a little light reading with this one but what I got was a book that challenged my notions of what slavery actually was. I didn't want to like this book, I wasn't sure how I felt about the story of an African American slave being told by a white woman. Kudos to Jennifer Chiaverini on this accomplishment. I think this book changes her status from genre fiction to literature. Of course, it isn't perfect, it can be a little flat in the modern sections but the story of Joanna is entralling and emotional and gritty. This book actually changed how I felt about my own slave ancestors. I went from a place of shame to a place of extreme pride and love for a people who were tortured and suffered and yet still managed to survive and maintain their humanity. If you think "The Help" is good, you might want to give this book a try as well.
