I don't normally read romance novels...
Revisado: 01-08-25
Ok, I'm just going to be upfront and honest: this was my first romance book.I usually read horror, mystery, that kind of thing so having a story where the biggest problem was relationships was so refreshing!
I loved how all the characters were performed. They really came to life through this reading. I genuinely enjoyed the plot and the interactions between the characters.
For someone who doesn't normally read these types of stories, I found it to be the breath of fresh air I needed! Such a beautiful love story!

Wanna cry a lot? Buckle in because it's SO worth it!
Revisado: 01-08-25
I cried several times listening to this book. I originally didn't want to read it because it had recieved a lot of hype and I thought I knew how a war story set in Vietnam was going to go. I was so wrong. This was beautifully written and beautifully performed.
I would compare it to A Thousand Splendid Suns in the way that it is about a subject Americans probably hear about often and think they know and then by reading realize maybe they don't.
It will make you laugh, make you cry, open your eyes up to certain viewpoints. Absolutely recommend.

Stephen King is always a hit
Revisado: 12-07-24
Stephen King is always a hit for me. There's a reason he's popular. That being said, I was left kinda reeling by the ending. This is one of those books that once you finish, you sit and go, Huh...Well...Hmm.
The narrator was good but I noticed that some parts felt like the audio just dropped out. Like when you're listening to music on your phone and then it immediately cuts out due to a call coming in. It was like the call suddenly dropped. Idk if that's something on my end (I listened mostly on my phone) or if it was something with the production quality.
I recommend this. Not a spooky Stephen King, more of a drama/thinker Stephen King story but certainly worth a read.

Historia
Sol Reyes has had a rough year. After a series of workplace incidents at her university lab culminates in a plagiarism accusation, Sol is put on probation. Dutiful visits to her homophobic father aren’t helping her mental health, and she finds her nightly glass of wine becoming more of an all-day—and all-bottle—event. Her wife, Alice Song, is far more optimistic. After all, the two finally managed to buy a house in the beautiful gated community of Maneless Grove. However, the neighbors are a little too friendly in Sol’s opinion.

Good, but not perfect
Revisado: 12-07-24
I liked that each character had a distinct voice, but I will say I was a little thrown by the narrator sometimes. When it was a descriptive part of the book, as opposed to dialogue, it sounded like listening to a newscast.
As for the story itself, I found this pretty good. There were certainly creepy, spooky parts and then social commentary that gave it the feel of Jordan Peele's Get Out meets Midsommar meets Stepford Wives. But the ending was a little flat. The story sets up the idea of Sol vs The Big Bad but then jumps right into epilogue instead. I was a little confused and disappointed by it.
Overall, loved it and it offered up some nice thriller parts. I'd seek out more by this author in the future.

Historia
More than a year after she helped save the world from the Sparnaxian invasion, Andrea Vernon is in a good place. Her boss is giving her greater responsibility and she’s getting to travel a lot (although her fill-in is hopeless at making coffee); things could be getting even more serious with her 8’ 4” superhero boyfriend, The Big Axe; and she has a really fun new BFF, Never More. Small issue, though, with that last item - Never More is a supervillain bent on world domination, and it looks as if nothing can stop her.

Hoping for a 3rd!
Revisado: 03-03-21
I loved the first one in this series but thought it was a standalone so when I saw there was a sequel I slammed the "add to my library" button so fast!
Bahni Turpin nailed it again with her reading, however I will say some of the characters were less fun to listen to this time around. I loved Nevermore's voice and the sqwauking. But the dino villian and Glare were just annoying and I hated whenever they were in a scene.
As for the story, I loved the continuation of Andrea's career and relationships. I got much more of a feel for Ms. O (still one of my favorite characters! Ugh! Just such an inspiration!). I like that we saw some familiar faces but got new characters too. My one fault is the ending. No spoilers, but I just felt like it wasn't wrapped up as nicely as the first book. With the first, you still had room to go with the story but it felt more satisfactory. So I'm hoping there's a 3rd book and it comes out soon! You can't leave me hanging like this Alexander C. Kane!

Historia
On a dark, wintry day, Eliza Grey receives a mysterious letter from her ailing Nana Mora begging her to come for a visit. This is an easy "Yes". Eliza has always preferred Nana Mora's beach cottage on St. Simons Island to the apartment she and her mom call home in the city. The island is a magical place where stories and legends grow as thick as the Spanish moss dangling in the trees. Now, Nana Mora's eyesight is fading, and there's something she wants to show Eliza before it’s totally gone: a mythical place locals refer to as Sirens Harbor.

Wholesome Story for the Whole Family
Revisado: 02-25-21
Ok, so I'm a 30 yr old adult and I LOVED this. Such a sweet story about family and mermaids and it's all just beautiful and well put together!
I'm not sure if I liked the narrators for this. During Eliza's parts I wanted to speed it up. Also, sorry, but worst Irish accent I've ever heard for Arthur (I think the character's name was Arthur).
Overall, a very sweet story. An excellent family bedtime tale (or tail since it's mermaids)!

Informative without being boring!
Revisado: 02-17-21
Narrator was great (which is good considering she's talking about effective communication lol)
I liked the lecture on Technology Talk best. I'd be interested to see if the speaker's opinion has changed since remote learning, working from home, etc has become more popular during Covid.
I feel like you could listen to these separately or in order like I did and still get a lot out of it.

Too Many Narrators, Not Enough Intrigue
Revisado: 02-16-21
Too many narrators. The different perspectives didn't really add to the story for me. The only character I liked was Harbinder.
I agree with what another reviewer said in that this tried to be both a ghost story and murder mystery novel and failed at both. Sorry, I just really feel this dragged. And then we get the short story of The Stranger at the end AGAIN? No thank you.
Did I hate it? No. Would I read it again or recommend it? Outside of a creative writing class, absolutely not.

A little long and dry, but still interesting!
Revisado: 02-08-21
This was fascinating! It was a little long and dry for my taste but if you're into true crime documentaries/that sort of thing, I would highly recommend this. I loved learning about the different methods employeed by the members of Necrosearch. Hearing the backstories of victims and researchers alike was also interesting.

Loved the POV, hated the narrator
Revisado: 02-03-21
I loved hearing about the different foods and I appreciated the clever ways the main character got around her problems. I liked hearing about a profession(?) that few have heard about and framing the story from this character's POV made the history of the early English royals fresh.
I'm sorry, but I hated this narrator. It was great for the time period of the book, but I feel like I really had to crank the volume to hear her.
I agree with the description that this is Handmaid's Tale (similar narration style) mixed with something else. If this were a movie, it'd be like The Witch or an indie or black and white artsy piece. There's just not enough dialogue to sustain drama.
