I bought this book because my favorite narrator was part of it. But. it is about human shape shifters gathering to throw insults at each other. And to fornicate with each other. Not my cup of tea.

Excellent virtual voice narration, great story.
Revisado: 09-29-24
This time travel yarn has a surprising premise, dotted with historical references from the 1840's era. Blackbeard meets the Jesse James gang -- interesting concepts and uniquely entertaining. I am truly surprised by the female virtual voice, who did not once detract from my listening experience. I have listened to several at this point, and some narration made me quit the book. So there is hope, but I hope that my favorite voice actors will still be able to charm me in the future.

Best book I've read in a long time!
Revisado: 09-26-24
The story was SO GOOD, I didn't want it to end. The first two books were captivating, and I was binge listening. I did feel, however, that the third book, "The Punishers", took too long in recapping the first two books. I moved ahead after listening to six chapters of repeating, almost word for word, the elements of the first two books. If you want a shortened version of the story, you could just read the third book from the beginning and get the general gist of the plot. Nontheless, I was riveted to the end and wanted more.
Fortunately, Victor Zugg has other books, and I am on it! And...I will probably listen to this book again soon!

Historia
Obituary writer Nadine Barbault doesn’t mind being called “Lady Death”. It suits the ice queen persona she’s cultivated to survive the fast-paced Toronto Herald. So when Nadine learns that famous (and reclusive) author Dot Voline has died, she doesn’t hesitate to run the obituary…only to discover that Dot is very much alive. Nadine’s screw-up has brought Wesley Chen of the rival Spear no end of joy—she’s been a thorn in his extremely ambitious side for years. But the renewed interest in Dot also surfaced chatter about a mysterious past scandal.

Incredibly boring
Revisado: 09-07-24
Well, it's about six and a half hours too long. I thought it was a rom-com but it is SO NOT! I's about a woman and a man fighting over some old person about whom the woman wrote and published an obituary who was not actually dead at the time. Thankfully I fell asleep early on and woke up with nine hours left to slog through. I decided not to.

I can't stand the narrator!
Revisado: 08-16-24
Her wobbly voice failed to engage me immediately. The opening scene was disgusting. Why does everybody have a foreign accent (performed badly, I might add)? I quit in the middle of Chapter 2.

Historia
After Englishman John Blackthorne is lost at sea, he awakens in a place few Europeans know of and even fewer have seen—Nippon. Thrust into the closed society that is seventeenth-century Japan, a land where the line between life and death is razor-thin, Blackthorne must negotiate not only a foreign people, with unknown customs and language, but also his own definitions of morality, truth, and freedom. As internal political strife and a clash of cultures lead to seemingly inevitable conflict, Blackthorne’s loyalty and strength of character are tested by both passion and loss.

This narrator spits his way through a great story.
Revisado: 04-25-24
I have always loved James Clavell's novels. I read this first when my daughter was in the 7th grade. She is now 55. I watched the movie and loved it, but this narrator spits and shouts his way through this awesome saga. I stubbornly listened to it, hoping I would get used to the terrible narration, but I never did. I have the second part to go through now, and I am sorry as hell that I bought it.
I realize that this is my own opinion, and some of you may like this guy's British accent. But the yelling? Oh, I lived in Japan for nine years and his Japanese is ATROCIOUS.

He can’t wait to see Daniel, who he’s always thought of as a son, but he knows the time has come to tell him the truth about his mother, and his father.

Nothing special.
Revisado: 01-20-24
I anticipated too much, I guess, but it was rather boring. Some parts were just stupid like Daniel saving his uncle from the lava flow. No one who lives in the island would do such a dumb tourist trick. I couldn't wait for it to end. So much potential but nothing came to fruition. Sad.
I will always buy books written about the place I was born and lived, but sadly very few achieve the essence of this sacred land. And shame on you, Brian Nishii, for mispronouncing "Kamehameha". I was truly startled.

Historia
A century ago, the Sentience Wars tore the galaxy apart and nearly ended the entire concept of intelligent space-faring life. In the aftermath, a curious tradition was invented - something to cheer up everyone who was left and bring the shattered worlds together in the spirit of peace, unity, and understanding. Once every cycle, the civilizations gather for the Metagalactic Grand Prix - part gladiatorial contest, part beauty pageant, part concert extravaganza, and part continuation of the wars of the past.

I exited this "thing" with 23 minutes left before the finish. READ THE OTHER AUDIBLE REVIEWS BEFORE YOU WASTE 9 HOURS AND CHANGE ON THIS PIECE OF EXTREMENT. There is no reason why this claptrap should exist in digital, paper, audible form or any other medium that takes up space in this universe. The author and the narrator should both be be exiled from the planet from treason against humanity for the extreme pain of trying to exhort any infinite meaning from this diatribe of misplaced word salad. While listening to this, I longed for a cigarette even though I quit smoking 62 years ago. Get my drift????
