AI read, and probably AI written
Revisado: 02-23-25
A pretty good intro to Epicureanism, especially since it was free with my membership. It’s read by AI, but I also think it was written by AI. That’s not “bad,” but it’s very repetitive (like very repetitive). If it’s free for you, it might be a good intro. FYI, it doesn’t really cover how to practice Epicureanism.

This “complete” collection does not include every Discourse! 1.11 is one of the most fundamental, and it’s one of the ones missing.

Critical contribution to our happiness, but a bit judgy
Revisado: 09-17-23
Psychology is so important for our happiness, so this book is worthwhile. I was surprised at the moral tone a handful of times. It’s not wrong, but it doesn’t fit alongside science. Trivial example: she calls them “jerk bats” because they don’t share. This seems to imply that people who don’t share are jerks. This belief spreads hate. It's a great book overall, though, and I’m grateful for it.

Too much Jesus folklore and not enough science for me.
Revisado: 06-29-23
I was unaware when I bought this that it was a Christian book with points and advice based on folklore. There are some great points in this book, but not enough empirical evidence for me.

Historia
This book will help you flourish. With this unprecedented promise, internationally esteemed psychologist Martin Seligman begins Flourish, his first book in 10 years - and the first to present his dynamic new concept of what well-being really is. Traditionally, the goal of psychology has been to relieve human suffering, but the goal of the Positive Psychology movement, which Dr. Seligman has led for 15 years, is different - it’s about actually raising the bar for the human condition.

I got excited for this book. I kept waiting for the steps, todos, outline, something, and it really never came. I’m interested in positive psychology now, but need to look somewhere else to learn it. Returning this title.

Out of nowhere, like a fresh breeze in a marketplace crowded with advice on what to believe, comes Byron Katie and what she calls "The Work". In the midst of a normal life, Katie became increasingly depressed. Then one morning, she woke up in a state of absolute joy, filled with the realization of how her own suffering had ended. The freedom of that realization has never left her, and now, in Loving What Is, you can discover the same freedom through The Work.

Historia
Here is Thomas Jefferson's classic abridgment of the Bible, in which Jefferson sculpted the words and ideas of Christ into a resounding moral philosophy. On and off for 17 years (including his term in the White House), Jefferson cut and pasted the philosophy of Jesus Christ, as recorded in Scripture, into one compact statement. He omitted any references to the virgin birth, miraculous healings, demonic possession, or supernatural events of any kind. His aim was to distinguish the moral philosophy of Christ from the religion that was later created around Christ.

Great but long and repetitive
Revisado: 08-10-19
I loved the book. Fasting and preventing insulin spikes make so much sense. There was a lot of “beating the dead horse” that I got through at 2.5x speed. The meditation instruction didn’t seem correct (think about thoughts? breathe out through the mouth?) but I just dismissed that section rather than throwing the baby out with the bath water.
This book gives me a more reasons to hate processed carbs (fewer excuses to eat them). I’ve been on this journey for a while and “no snacking” and “no processed carbs” are next logical steps. I cut out added sugar in 2016 but still ate lots of carbs. I think that was a better approach for me than a cold turkey approach.
Thanks. I’m looking forward to the recipe book.
