This is an easy listen, scholarly but not clunky, measured and considerate without being boring. Beard just does what she does best here.

This book is phenomenal. It’s balanced, clear eyed, logical and still very human. I listened to it in a single day because I just couldn’t stop. I will be listening to it again. Shellenberger isn’t someone I universally agree with but only a fool would waive off his reasoning - you’ll have a better formed opinion by listening, understanding and then formulating your thoughts no matter where you are on the climate debate. Truly a top notch work and the reader was excellent too! Stephen Graybill is very easy to listen to with excellent clarity and good intonation throughout. Listen to it, read it.

This is an insightful book. I don’t agree with everything this author has to say, but if you ignore the force of his logic than you’re missing out - you should listen or read and engage it mentally. Phenomenal work, at times it’s powerful brevity was outright astounding. There was more in a paragraph of this work than some manage in a whole book. This is the type of work that makes me read or listen to an author’s whole catalogue. I can’t praise it enough. Genius even where I disagree it was challenging and worthwhile.

Dilettante history with a clear political motivation

What can be said about this book, well the funny thing is I agree with the idea that the Spartan mystique exceeded the Spartan reality - and like most anyone who’s read in Greek history knows that their society was not at all ideal by our standards. But this work is extremely amateurish. The cherry picking of events is far from a scholarly and serious approach and the overall attempt to use it just for a ham handed political attack was so pathetic it left me feeling embarrassed for the author. Ps: the rule of competence is asinine and could never be considered axiomatic as a historiographical tool - sometimes people are incompetent, that’s reality, it’s hard to believe that this half wit author thinks this is a great principle.

I could sum up the whole book like this; the Spartans weren’t so great and neither are guns rights activists, right wing extremists, or really anyone on the right. Now enjoy me cherry picking history and making generally unqualified conclusions which will largely support my thesis.

Listen to this then read it. Lindsay lays it out simply and if you’re very interested in this subject matter he gives you all you need to start your own independent research. It’s not clunky, or overly long, it’s just right to really give you a good handle on the topic.

The only nice thing I can say about this book is that since it legitimizes its arguments by cherry picking facts and resorting to the hurling of pejoratives it’s brief. He makes a couple worthwhile criticisms of the military industrial complex but is horribly short on putting together a plan to address the problem and even less to anticipate challenges that might occur if we do address the problem.

This book is a post modern exercise in reimagining the past of a minority culture to be something completely other than what it was, almost in entirety. The Myth of Andalusian Paradise completely takes it apart. You don’t even need to read that if you have a cursory knowledge of the genocidal massacres, de jure religious discrimination and the hardening of all three major religions that occurred in Andalusian Spain. I honestly almost gave this more stars as a comedy, but that would be wrong because this purports to accurately portray history, and it doesn’t. Absolutely shameful entry.

Intelligent, informative, and entertaining. This book is a strong reminder that we have a lot of things we need to be talking about that many refuse to tolerate any utterance except affirmation. Listen to it.

I thought this book would be boring but worthwhile, but I didn’t find it boring. I think it presents some good principles and a lot of reinforcement for me personally, about how to raise my son and encourage parents I know.

Stephen Fry brings an unique voice to stories I have heard many times and always love. Honestly what surprised me most about this collection was that Fry shows some scholarly muscle while never boring, that he manages to keep it fun without making it dumb. A true accomplishment.

He narrates it in such a way that brings it to life and honestly I find myself laughing like I am watching him and Laurie on their “Bit of Fry and Laurie” show.

I don’t know what else to say, if you like Greek mythology, good story telling, or intelligent humor then you should listen to Mythos. One of the best listens of my many this year.
