Acerca de esta escucha
Bloomsbury presents The Madness of Crowds written and read by Douglas Murray.
THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER
A Times and Sunday Times Book of the Year
Updated with a new afterword by the author
'Douglas Murray fights the good fight for freedom of speech ... A truthful look at today's most divisive issues' – Jordan B. Peterson
'[Murray’s] latest book is beyond brilliant and should be read, must be read, by everyone' – Richard Dawkins
Are we living through the great derangement of our times?
In The Madness of Crowds Douglas Murray investigates the dangers of ‘woke’ culture and the rise of identity politics. In lively, razor-sharp prose he examines the most controversial issues of our moment: sexuality, gender, technology and race, with interludes on the Marxist foundations of ‘wokeness’, the impact of tech and how, in an increasingly online culture, we must relearn the ability to forgive.
One of the few writers who dares to counter the prevailing view and question the dramatic changes in our society – from gender reassignment for children to the impact of transgender rights on women – Murray’s penetrating book, now published with a new afterword taking account of the book's reception and responding to the worldwide Black Lives Matter protests, clears a path of sanity through the fog of our modern predicament.

The Strange Death of Europe is a highly personal account of a continent and culture caught in the act of suicide. Declining birth rates, mass immigration, and cultivated self-distrust and self-hatred have come together to make Europeans unable to argue for themselves and incapable of resisting their own comprehensive alteration as a society and an eventual end.

In The War on the West, Douglas Murray shows how many well-meaning people have been fooled by hypocritical and inconsistent anti-West rhetoric. After all, if we must discard the ideas of Kant, Hume, and Mill for their opinions on race, shouldn’t we discard Marx, whose work is peppered with racial slurs and anti-Semitism? Embers of racism remain to be stamped out in America, but what about the raging racist inferno in the Middle East and Asia?

The culture of “safety” and its intolerance of opposing viewpoints has left many young people anxious and unprepared for adult life. Lukianoff and Haidt offer a comprehensive set of reforms that will strengthen young people and institutions, allowing us all to reap the benefits of diversity, including viewpoint diversity. This is a book for anyone who is confused by what’s happening on college campuses today, or has children, or is concerned about the growing inability of Americans to live and work and cooperate across party lines.

Historia
The quest for social justice is a powerful crusade of our time, with an appeal to many different people, for many different reasons. But those who use the same words do not always present the same meanings. Clarifying those meanings is the first step toward finding out what we agree on and disagree on. From there, it is largely a question of what the facts are. Social Justice Fallacies reveals how many things that are thought to be true simply cannot stand up to documented facts, which are often the opposite of what is widely believed.

Discrimination and Disparities challenges believers in such one-factor explanations of economic outcome differences as discrimination, exploitation, or genetics. It is listenable enough for people with no prior knowledge of economics. Yet the empirical evidence with which it backs up its analysis spans the globe and challenges beliefs across the ideological spectrum.

According to the establishment media, the intelligentsia, and our political chattering class, the greatest threat to American freedom lies in right-wing authoritarianism. We’ve heard that some 75 million Americans who voted for Donald Trump represent the rise of American fascism; that conservatives have allowed authoritarianism to bloom in their midst, creating a grave danger for the republic.

Have you heard that language is violence and that science is sexist? Have you read that certain people shouldn't practice yoga? Or been told that being obese is healthy, that there is no such thing as biological sex, or that only White people can be racist? Are you confused by these ideas, and do you wonder how they have managed to challenge the logic of Western society? In this probing volume, Helen Pluckrose and James Lindsay document the evolution of the dogma that informs these ideas, from its coarse origins in French postmodernism to its refinement within activist academic fields.

Historia
Leading a cultural revolution driven by identity politics and so-called 'social justice', the new puritanism movement is best understood as a religion - one that makes grand claims to moral purity and tolerates no dissent. In The New Puritans, Andrew Doyle powerfully examines the underlying belief-systems of this ideology and how it has risen so rapidly to dominate all major political, cultural and corporate institutions. He reasons that, to move forward, we need to understand where these New Puritans came from and what they hope to achieve.

Gender identity ideology is about more than Twitter storms and using the right pronouns. In just 10 years, laws, company policies, school and university curricula, sport, medical protocols, and the media have been reshaped to privilege self-declared gender identity over biological sex. People are being shamed and silenced for attempting to understand the consequences of redefining "man" and "woman". While compassion for transgender lives is well-intentioned, it is stifling much-needed inquiry into the significance of our bodies.

Historia
The Vision of the Anointed is a devastating critique of the mindset behind the failed social policies of the past thirty years. Thomas Sowell sees what has happened not as a series of isolated mistakes, but as a logical consequence of a vision whose defects have led to disasters in education, crime, family disintegration, and other social pathology. In this book, "politically correct" theory is repeatedly confronted with facts-and sharp contradictions between the two are explained in terms of a whole set of self-congratulatory assumptions held by political and intellectual elites.

Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Surêté du Québec and his team of investigators are called in to the scene of a suspicious death in a rural village south of Montreal. Jane Neal, a local fixture in the tiny hamlet of Three Pines, just north of the U.S. border, has been found dead in the woods. The locals are certain it’s a tragic hunting accident and nothing more, but Gamache smells something foul in these remote woods, and is soon certain that Jane Neal died at the hands of someone much more sinister than a careless bowhunter.

Most commentators look at the issue of immigration from the viewpoint of immediate politics. In doing so, they focus on only a piece of the issue and lose touch with the larger picture. Now Thomas Sowell offers a sweeping historical and global look at a large number of migrations over a long period of time. Migrations and Cultures shows the persistence of cultural traits in particular racial and ethnic groups.

Douglas Murray, #1 international bestselling author and renowned cultural commentator, confronts arguably the most pressing question of our time: Why are Western supporters of Palestine unwittingly aligning with an evil empire? The campus left frames the violent hostilities as white colonialists committing genocide. Yet only a third of Israelis are Ashkenazi Jews of European ancestry. Murray argues that the conflict is not a simple tale of oppressor versus oppressed, but a clash between a thriving multi-racial democracy and a death cult bent on its destruction.

Historia
In 2020, the world faced its biggest crisis in a generation: a global pandemic. In the UK, it exposed deep divisions within society and laid bare a toxic culture war that had been raging beneath the surface. From the outset, Piers Morgan urged the nation to come to its senses, once and for all, and held the government to often ferocious account over its handling of the crisis. COVID-19 shed shocking light on the problems that plague our country. Stockpilers and lockdown-cheats revealed our grotesque levels of self-interest.

In the 1960s, Mao launched China’s Cultural Revolution. Cities grew overcrowded. Technocrats demanded progress from above. Anyone opposed was sent to be “re-educated.” China’s revolution was bloody, fast, and a failure, but what if America started a revolution at the same time, based on the same bad ideas, and it’s just been slower, calmer, and more effective?

According to the establishment media, the intelligentsia, and our political chattering class, the greatest threat to American freedom lies in right-wing authoritarianism. We’ve heard that some 75 million Americans who voted for Donald Trump represent the rise of American fascism; that conservatives have allowed authoritarianism to bloom in their midst, creating a grave danger for the republic.

The thesis of Human Diversity is that advances in genetics and neuroscience are overthrowing an intellectual orthodoxy that has ruled the social sciences for decades. The core of the orthodoxy consists of three dogmas: Gender is a social construct. Race is a social construct. Class is a function of privilege. The problem is that all three dogmas are half-truths. They have stifled progress in understanding the rich texture that biology adds to our understanding of the social, political, and economic worlds we live in. It is not a story to be feared. But it is a story that needs telling.

For all of the West's failings—terrible food, cold weather and questionable politicians with funny hair to name a few—it has its upsides. Konstantin would know. Growing up in the Soviet Union, he experienced first-hand the horrors of a socialist paradise gone wrong, having lived in extreme poverty with little access to even the most basic of necessities. It wasn't until he moved to the UK that Kisin found himself thriving in an open and tolerant society, receiving countless opportunities he would never have had otherwise.

Historia
In 1995, James W. Loewen penned the classic work of criticism Lies My Teacher Told Me, a left-leaning corrective that addressed much of what was sanitized and omitted from American history books. But in the decades that followed, false leftist narratives—as wrong as those they supplanted—have come to dominate American academia and education. Now, in the same spirit but updated for 2024, Wilfred Reilly demolishes the scholastic myths propagated by the left, uncovers fresh angles on “established” events, and turns what we think we know about history upside down.

An Urgent Read for Our Over-woke Times
An excellent and thoughtful critique of the pitfalls of social justice theory, identity politics, critical race theory, and intersectionality. Over the course of a decade, I've spent a lot of time in groups that would easily be described as "social justice groups", and I've experienced firsthand the sliding of these groups into unreasonableness and counterproductive behavior over the last few years. Douglas brings much-needed clarity to some of the most controversial social and political ideas of our time. I strongly recommend my fellow lefties give this a read and give Murray's analysis careful consideration. His performance on the audiobook is wonderful and entertaining.

Ends on a note of hope.
Douglas Murray is indeed a prolific author and commentator on the tribulations of the relationship modern social justice activism has developed with the populous. In this book he offers an insight to the listener into the world of that is constantly outraged. From the pitfalls of elite institutions of humanities in the west in their exercise of affirmative action to the modern activists cannibalizing and outcasting an older generation of activists.
Murray does offer a glimmer of hope at the end, one rooted the Christian traditions of the west.
Although Murray does a great job of jotting down the madness of the twitter verse and offers a sobering insight into the complexities of human sexuality, when it comes to the brewing madness of right-wing populist movements around the world and especially in Europe and America, he does what most politicians do - condemns it has a blot on the providence of the developed world and moves on. Maybe it’s too difficult or degrading a topic to broach for Murray’s genuine efforts to help any young person grow out of or navigate what he calls the trip wires of the social justice mine field and the real-world consequences one might have to face for stepping on them.
Although Murray’s performance is great and the book is wonderful to listen to, it does feel at times a tedious commentary on social media scandals, filibusters that Murray offers and the quite un-relatable schadenfreude on western academics and corporate diversity boards. Murray does end on a note of hope and positivity that really does make the book worth listening to and reading. Kudos to him for writing this book.

Masterpiece tale of the current state of the West-
Worth it just to hear Murray read lines from a Nicki Minaj song. Douglas goes into great detail to explain the current state of insanity we find ourselves in. A must read (listen?)

Excellent Analysis
Douglas Murray provides an excellent service in his analysis of where the West finds itself in this 2nd decade of the 21st century. The divisive and disastrous ideology behind identity politics is shown to require people to hold not only contradictory points of view simultaneously, but that the end result of such viewpoints will cause us to lose all forward progress that the West has attained thus far in the battle for human rights on every front, and that the whole direction of this Post Modern disaster is completely and utterly dimenting.

Criticism with kindness
Murray does something that is quite rare these days, he marries criticism with kindness. While he is critical of the four movements covered in the book, he stops short of eviscerating them. He is very cognizant of not succumbing to the same madness of which he is so critical of. He leads the reader/listener down the path, planting ideas along the way, but stopping just short of a final conclusion, allowing the listener to navigate the final steps of the path for themselves. Thus, giving them a richer and more engaging experience, than if he had just stated the conclusion to begin with. This book was written for a broad swath of people geared with an eye towards changing minds, rather than confirming beliefs. Murray does not preach from the pulpit of reason. Rather, he engages in the missionary work of sanity, attempting to convince the masses to pause from their phone screens and twitter feeds and let forgotten things known only yesterday, creep back into our minds. It is a must read for everyone.

The Madness And Ignorance of Man.
the title of this book couldn't be anymore pertinent to the topic it discusses. Douglas Murray systematically explains each category of the so called social disease crippling western civilization. add to that the fact that Douglas Murray is gay and absolutely unbiased in his writing and you have a rational explanation of emotionally fueled Mob Madness battering our culture! Murray clearly and concisely unpacks the true facts, through history and science mixed with common sense. which brings us back to earth and a civil society. if you've been struggling to figure out how this mess was concocted then this book will definitely sort it out. very well read by Mr Murray and explained in an interesting way. a must read for everyone no matter what side your on..

Very important for a sane humanity
I highly recommend this book, in any form, because it lays out the real madness of small, but artificially magnified and highly politicized groups that our society is increasingly becoming controlled by and bowing down to any made up outrage. Observations that we all have experienced or heard is presented in an organized and clear manner supported by facts and evidence. We need to wake up and push back on these dangerous and divisive trends to politicize and racialize everything. We cannot allow the shutting down of dialogue, before those actions are so institutionalized that we cannot reverse it.
