Historia
The time is 1975. The place is an unnamed city by the sea. The government has just declared a State of Emergency, in whose upheavals four strangers—a spirited widow, a young student uprooted from his idyllic hill station, and two tailors who have fled the caste violence of their native village—will be thrust together, forced to share one cramped apartment and an uncertain future.

Brilliant Book and Narrator.
Revisado: 02-20-20
What an intricate and intimate weave of familial vicissitudes this book follows, and within one of the most oppressive political atmospheres India had endured in recent times. I only wish more of Mistry's books were offered in translation on Audible.

Historia
Young Pip Tyler doesn't know who she is. She knows that her real name is Purity, that she's saddled with $130,000 in student debt, that she's squatting with anarchists in Oakland, and that her relationship with her mother - her only family - is hazardous. But she doesn't have a clue who her father is, why her mother chose to live as a recluse with an invented name, or how she'll ever have a normal life.

Jonathan Franzen deserves better narration
Revisado: 02-05-20
Franzen's writing, always insightful, intelligent and ironic, really deserves better narration.
Audible's version of THE TWENTY-SEVENTH CITY suffers from the same mismatched narration as PURITY. Dan John Miller, Frank Muller, Scott Aiello, are a few of so many who could do justice to these novels. The young woman with the high voice who reads the female part in Purity is so difficult to listen to, I skipped ahead to the 8th chapter (new narrator), who, though better, reads very speedily. Franzen must be savored, as his phraseology is so rich, and character development replete with fascinating particulars and proleptic nuance.

Stegner is wonderful poetic writer, but narration
Revisado: 09-22-19
Wallace Stegner is a masterful writer, but his poetic descriptions are lost in this narration. In Crossing to Safety narrated by Richard Poe, you hear the brilliance of Stegner's descriptions. Edward Herrmann also picks up on the lyricism of his writing. However, this narrator and Mark Bramhall read the poetry as though it were an irritation. The prose sounds more like a complaint than the thoughtful cogitation that it is. I wish there were alternate narrators for these modern classic authors (Pat Conroy is another author whose writing is beautiful but only heard in the reading of a couple of the Audible narrators, Frank Muller and Dan John Miller))

Narcissistic abusers... They manipulate. They lie. They cheat. They pick fights. They gaslight to make their partners feel as though they are losing their minds. They compartmentalize their lives so that they can keep their stories and their characters straight. They seem to become whomever the situation calls for. They seem to do it with ease and a lack of conscience.

Revisado: 08-18-19
JB Snow knows what someone who is involved with a narcissist needs to hear. She understands the need for re-iteration of information in a variety of topical contexts. She understands that someone experiencing this abuse wants concise insight, not 8 hours of vagaries. (Audible often uses and AI narrator for her books which is tricky when it cannot pronounce "narcissist, narcissism" and other seminal words!)

"Communication" for sociopaths!
Revisado: 04-19-19
This book has absolutely nothing to do with communication, as the description would lead one to believe. It is a manual describing the manipulation and seduction of "targets". If you are looking for advice on how to best take advantage of another's vulnerability; how to secure relationships through a selective process of power dynamics; how to successfully objectify all those you come into contact with; how to "know your soulmate" through a bizarre set of algorithms and contrivances (typical of a sociopathic personality), then this book is for you. ("Alexa" may prove a more fulfilling and benign "target"). The narration sounds like three computer generated voices.
The thought of this book serving as a model of socialization for my daughter-- or anyone, for that matter, with whom I interact, is chilling.

Entitled young Narrator lacked empathy
Revisado: 05-28-18
Unabashed misogyny and entitlement distracted me from a potentially good story. The entitled narrator not only had a blatant disregard for women, but also placed pathological blame on particular women in many instances, (eg: a mother's suicide). The author could benefit from some psychology courses. Genital mutilation was mentioned as though it were a mosquito bite. What??

Historia
St. Louis, Missouri, is a quietly dying river city until it hires a new police chief: a charismatic young woman from Bombay, India, named S. Jammu. No sooner has Jammu been installed, though, than the city's leading citizens become embroiled in an all-pervasive political conspiracy. A classic of contemporary fiction, The Twenty-Seventh City shows us an ordinary metropolis turned inside out, and the American dream unraveling into terror and dark comedy.

Amazing book
Revisado: 12-09-17
This book is exquisitely beautiful and painful. The author masterfully details the intertwining relationships of four friends throughout many decades--lives replete with love, success, agony, beauty, enlarged ancillary relationships. The tenderness and compassion that the characters show one another is such divine humanity. The author narrates the story from many points in time--perspectives which jump and rapidly change, only to return chapters later, to complete a thought. I will miss the characters in this book. I feel I've known them; lived among them, sharing triumphs, burdens and aesthetic delights. This book is a letter, a blessing, a consummate model of intimate friendship.

Historia
The second novel by Donna Tartt, best-selling author of The Goldfinch (winner of the 2014 Pulitzer Prize), The Little Friend is a grandly ambitious and utterly riveting novel of childhood, innocence, and evil. The setting is Alexandria, Mississippi, where one Mother’s Day a little boy named Robin Cleve Dufresnes was found hanging from a tree in his parents’ yard. Twelve years later Robin’s murder is still unsolved. So Robin’s sister Harriet - unnervingly bright and insufferably determined - sets out to unmask his killer.
