Historia
A best-selling historian's gripping account of the powerful men who controlled America's financial destiny. From the first days of the United States, a battle raged over money. On one side were the democrats, who wanted cheap money and feared the concentration of financial interests in the hands of a few. On the other were the capitalists who sought the soundness of a national bank and the profits that came with it.

Short sweet and pithy overview of the financial formation of the country.
Brands gets the salient points across in an entertaining manner in a “cliff’s notes” fashion.
I recommend this book highly!

Historia
In Dreams of El Dorado, H. W. Brands tells the thrilling, panoramic story of the settling of the American West. He takes us from John Jacob Astor's fur trading outpost in Oregon to the Texas Revolution, from the California gold rush to the Oklahoma land rush. He shows how the migrants' dreams drove them to feats of courage and perseverance that put their stay-at-home cousins to shame - and how those same dreams also drove them to outrageous acts of violence against indigenous peoples and one another. El Dorado was at least as elusive in the West as it ever was in the East.

Revisado: 08-04-24
As a young boy, I used to lay in bed at night, thinking about being part of Lewis and Clark’s expedition or being a cowboy driving cattle across the range.
This book brought back those memories.
I’m glad there are gifted writers and storytellers out there like Mr. Brands!
What a great story and what a great read !

Historia
William Randolph Hearst, known to his staff as the "Chief", was a brilliant business strategist and a man of prodigious appetites. By the 1930s, he controlled the largest publishing empire in the United States, including 28 newspapers, the Cosmopolitan Picture Studio, radio stations, and 13 magazines. He quickly learned how to use this media stronghold to achieve unprecedented political power. In The Chief, David Nasaw presents an intimate portrait of the man famously characterized in the classic film Citizen Kane.

What a pleasure it was to read (listen to) this book!
Revisado: 07-31-24
Absolutely one of the best biographies I’ve ever read! Hearst was both Good and bad, moral and amoral, and on both the right and wrong side of history, at various times in his life.
But one thing he was not was boring.
I would rate the author, David Nasaw as one of the better storytellers out there.
Great book and a very worthwhile read/listen!

Historia
The Passage of Power follows Lyndon Johnson through both the most frustrating and the most triumphant periods of his career - 1958 to 1964. It is a time that would see him trade the extraordinary power he had created for himself as Senate Majority Leader for what became the wretched powerlessness of a Vice President in an administration that disdained and distrusted him. Yet it was, as well, the time in which the presidency, the goal he had always pursued, would be thrust upon him in the moment it took an assassin’s bullet to reach its mark.

I can’t wait until the fifth book comes out! Even though I believe Johnson is one of the three worst presidents in the history of this country, there’s no doubt that he was a genius when it comes to politics
