Historia
A series of grisly murders rocks London. At each location, only a jumble of bones remains of the deceased, along with a bizarre sphere covered in strange symbols. The son of the latest victim seeks the help of Sherlock Holmes and his former partner, Dr. John Watson. They discover the common thread tying together the murders. Bizarre geometries, based on ancient schematics, enable otherworldly creatures to enter our dimension, seeking to wreak havoc and destruction.

Good performance of the equivalent of a 50's b-movie. Character reactions and behavior not believable or rational to situations that are over the top crazy. Descriptions of gore quite indulgent. Not a very good book.

Historia
The Somme: these words conjure the image of war rigidly fought by traditional means even when catastrophe clearly loomed. Relying on personal testimonies never before published, this study of those who survived the first day of battle (July 1, 1916) captures this epic conflagration from all angles. Follow the action as soldiers crawl across No Man’s Land in the face of German guns, struggle with the conditions in the trenches, and survey the scene from the air as the RFC tries to control the skies above the battlefield.

Wrong narrator
Revisado: 09-29-21
Given the wholly British perspective of this book, it's odd that an American narrator would be chosen, and one whose voice just doesn't give the content it's requisite gravitas.

Historia
Hitler's forces had pressed in on the small Belgian town in a desperate offensive designed to push back the Allies, starting the Battle of the Bulge. So far, the US soldiers had managed to repel waves of attackers and even a panzer onslaught, but as their ammunition dwindled, the weary paratroopers of the 101st Airborne could only hope for a miracle - a miracle in the form of General George S. Patton and his Third Army.

One of the best
Revisado: 03-31-21
Despite the title, Patton doesn't overshadow the narrative of this wonderfully researched book. It details many of the smaller units involved in the fighting, weaving personal accounts on both sides into the potentially confusing technical narrative. It flows very nicely and never lags.

One of the harder Ledger books to follow in my opinion. Full of surrealism and fragmentation, the plot wanders at times. But hey, it's Joe Porter reading A Ledger book so I'm there.

Well...
Revisado: 01-18-16
The narration portraying a strong Puritan woman is halting and breathy - frustratingly portraying her as weak. The overall performance was fair.
The story was fine as well - taking a good while to actually engage me, but keeping me interested after it finally did.
After listening to The Midwife's Revolt by Jodi Daynard, which I found was excellent - well researched and beautifully read - this was a little less than enthralling, however it was good enough.
If you can find it on sale give it a try. But not sure if I'd spend a credit on it.

Beautiful little book
Revisado: 12-18-15
I'm listening to the end of Yellow Crocus. What a sweet, sweet book. Predictable at times but so sweet and tender.
Especially the narrator that reads it. I think Bahni's narration literally makes the book. The characters just come alive. She does such a beautiful job.
And it brings back tender feelings for my Auntie Gladys who watched over me as a little one.

So much better than the first!
Revisado: 07-15-15
Kirby Heyborne brought this book to life and gave it the dignity it deserves! After the dreadful narration of the first book I almost couldn't bear to listen to another go, but hoping it might be the narrator that was the problem and took a chance on the second. The difference was night and day. And, frankly, the book was much better written and, the characters better developed. Anyone that I was around while I listened to it fell into the story immediately and didn't want to stop listening. Just so enjoyable. Can't wait for the next.
