The book had me excited in the first two chapters. A no nonsense view of why we need vulnerability in leadership.

Then the author makes a brief and shocking statement about the current research being done on the topic of vulnerability and you realize that the author uses none of that over 25 years of the most detailed research by Brene Brown. No, he wants to be different and decides to do his own research.

His research is Interviewing 100 --mostly male CEOs -- which, although interesting, feeds into the bias we are trying to remove from workplace culture today.

It is that very unbalanced view of leadership that make this book speak only to one segment of the workplace. So the book is not for every leader. It captures one sided views built on conversations.

Why not use over 25 years of the most cutting research on the topic and then give it your spin??! How powerful would that be?

That realization made the book difficult to finish because the topic is already difficult to understand and implement in our workplace and intentionally removing the research that finally brought vulnerability to light is a missed opportunity to push this important leadership skill further. Yes, these CEO stories are interesting but if you want to understand and actually implement this into your workplace--then this isn't going to do much for you. Use your time and credits elsewhere.

I have listened and re-listened to many chapters of this incredibly powerful community of advice, guidance and caring by Mia Birdsong. It felt personal and liberating to embrace so many realities of our society, replacing confusion with love and compassion.
So many times i wanted to order the physical book, but knew that there was a closeness that would be lost when listening to the many stories shared.
Over my lifetime there have been books that redirected and changed me. This one has defined my path ahead.
