quite a good yarn if you are in the mood for some lighthearted stereotypical sleuthing.
David reads well, and yes you really can hear the smile in his voice at times. I am not sure it is worth $20 or about that, but a credit from a Platinum member is not too much.
If you have heard all the Peter Temple stories and know all Lord Peter's tales (Sawyer) and you know most of Agatha's by heart, then this will be a welcome newcomer.
If it comes up on a special sale, all the better.

Historia
A nineteenth century French priest discovers something in his mountain village at the foot of The Pyrenees which enables him to amass and spend a fortune of millions of pounds. The tale seems to begin with buried treasure and then turns into an unprecedented historical detective story - a modern Grail quest leading back through cryptically coded parchments, secret societies, the Knights Templar, the Cathar heretics of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries and a dynasty of obscure French kings deposed more than 1,300 years ago.

Abridged and still good
Revisado: 02-20-18
Read this book decades ago and loaned it to many people, and got it back too.
Not everyone cares what has happened in the last 2000 years, nor what happens in the future.
This is really a book for the curious, people who would like to understand better about a lot of things. Tell some people Jesus had a wife and kids and heck no he did not get nailed to a cross and well it is just one of those conspiracy stories like the Earth is round.
Picket and Prince were probably investigating 'The Templar Revelation' at about the same time Michael Baigent , Richard Leigh , Henry Lincoln were investigating 'Holy Blood..'. In this abridged form a lot of the actual researching is not there, and the main thrust, the big story is there. Well I found it really exciting back then lifetimes ago and still do.. How many people were brutally murdered because they thought and said.."Hang on a sec." Joseph was not Jesus' dad?" or worse. And wars waged because some idiots wanted to read the Good Book themselves.
Simon Prebble does a good job reading this.
Even though this is abridged, it is a good listen for interesting people and if you really want to read it all, go on buy the hard copy.
If nothing else it is a story about the hoodwinking of the west, for a few thousand years.

Enjoyable stories. Not Great
Revisado: 02-14-18
Like others I am saddened for our loss as this was a light enjoyable series. Elizabeth has given many of us hours of enjoyable listening. Her other stories not in this series, have likewise provided her followers a few good yarns set in lovely locations.

Historia
When a spaceship landed in an open field in the quiet mill town of Sorrow Falls, Massachusetts, everyone realized humankind was not alone in the universe. With that realization everyone freaked out for a little while. Or almost everyone. The residents of Sorrow Falls took the news pretty well. This could have been due to a certain local quality of unflappability, or it could have been that in three years the ship did exactly nothing other than sit quietly in that field, and nobody understood the full extent of this nothing the ship was doing better than the people who lived right next door.

Zombies! C'mon!
Revisado: 01-27-18
A possibly interesting take on aliens was sent down the plughole with the introduction of Zombies. An entity of ideas as powerful as Deep Thought uses Zombies to locate 'her'. Really?
The body suits and programmed personalities of recent reports,,'quick clones'. are more interesting than mouldy recycled dead bodies.
A few cute propositions, including precocious teens confronting the Pentagon can stretch the bounds and still survive, but Zombies? nope. one star only

Fine-art aficionado. Master of disguise. Jewelry expert. Historian. Gentleman. Burglar. Arsene Lupin is all of these and more. In 1905, Maurice Leblanc introduced his gentleman-burglar in the story "L'Arrestation d'Arsène Lupin". Shortly thereafter, the stories were collected as one single volume. Historia
While on a sailing trip in the Baltic Sea, two young adventurers-turned-spies uncover a secret German plot to invade England. Widely recognized as the first modern spy thriller, this 1902 lone masterpiece by World War I Royal Navy officer Erskine Childers was written as a wake-up call to the British government to attend to its North Sea defenses. It accomplished that task and has been considered a classic of espionage literature ever since.

One of the Best Reads
Revisado: 12-30-17
A very good read and sadly a disappointing listen.
Mostly 2 characters and the voices do need to be clearly distinguishable to work as an audio. Simon Vance usually is an excellent narrator and in this classic story of the sea, he misses the mark.
I appreciate the voices are not forced and accept it is a hard task.
Over a hundred years have passed since the writing of this classic British Espionage story, and there are some lovely allusions relating to the seas. The love of sailing and boating, curious minds, challenging the natural and man made forces by ordinary people and some good old fashioned adventures as the Riddle is solved. Even Riddles are a very British adventure, reflected in another more modern classic with .'.What have I got in my Pocket?.' (Bilbo Baggins)
If the act of reading is difficult, and you are ready to listen closely then this is a book well worth getting to know. Simon has a voice that is easy to listen to that does not jar on the ear drums, and, you will need to listen carefully.

"My name is Mike Ross. I'm a Ferryman. I help people with ghost problems, or ghosts with people problems. Funny thing, no one ever helps me with my problems. Civil War ghosts bent on killing me, Skinwalkers who just want my body, and a vindictive spirit linked both to my bloodline and my destiny... It turns out the dead still hold a good deal of influence over the world, and they don't want to give it up. I'm in way over my head. Fortunately, I'm too stubborn to quit."

Expected to enjoy this story
Revisado: 12-08-17
Not even ghosts can evade the fixation of fists, knives and violence. There really can be a good yarn without this weird focus on having to have so many fighting events. Sure there is the odd witty repartee but not enough to redeem this story.
If you are looking for a light witty take on ghostly events, avoid this one, just more same old, same old punching stabbing exploding stuff. One star only

Decorations .
Revisado: 11-21-17
Off to the High Country this time.
Cattle Duffing and the great alarms still, of the perceived threat of Communism in Australia during the 1930's. Oh and the search for Bushrangers' loot.
A quick look at the racism prevalent at the time, sexual inequality and chauvinism and..
The last lines sure brought a chuckle. A grand exit. However a person needs to know a little about Aussie books and awards to get the joke.
If you do not know much about Australia it may help to read up on some of the Artists of the 30's in Australia too. Norman Lindsay. These are like the decorations on the iced cake.
This series is curious. On one hand we find the almost serial adventures of our hero, Rolly, and his friends and family and on the other hand, an introduction to the great events of the time in NSW. There is also the look at attitudes over a wide spectrum of society.. The more I listen the more I love this series.
If you only check the 'Rowland Sinclair Mysteries' you will miss out on another book in the series, 'A Dangerous Language' so do an Audible Search for Sulari Gentill to locate it. Its worth the listen. A prequil to the series I have only read about, Sulari Gentill gave free to her reading fans.

Sydney in the 30's. Rural NSW in the 30's.The characters enter stage with faults and foibles and discover a world 'gone mad' with Old and New Guards, (Conservatives and Nazi) rising to defend Australia from the Left Wing and Communists. There is talk of Civil War.

Historia
It’s 1932, a time of crisis and doubt. Returning home on a luxury ocean liner after months abroad, Rowland Sinclair and his companions dine with a suffragette, a Bishop and a retired World Prophet. The Church encounters less orthodox religion in the Aquitania’s chandeliered ballroom, where men of God rub shoulders with mystics in dinner suits. The elegant atmosphere on board is charged with tension, but civility prevails...until people start to die.

Enjoyable Series. Pretty Good..
Revisado: 10-24-17
The character development comes out more as the series progresses. There are 2 or 3 other books Audible is not offering. So there is a large bit missing in the series. The stories are good enough for them to sort of knit together anyway.
Degas narrates the book and animates the characters in good form.
The writing style presents a quaint setting for events . In some ways it is a kind of old fashioned serial for adults, Paul Temple style, in a book. Not exactly and really 'a bit like', as there is a look at very important issues of the day
In this story there is mysterious murder, eccentric artists, a beautiful young .woman and a handsome rich young man. There is a kindly old lady,a former world prophet, clergy and a woman in distress. Shipboard in Staterooms, fine dining and dancing link the wealthy, famous and infamous. This is a setting for meeting new friends and enemies and murder.
Back home and on land the intrigues progress.
