Inspired by the enormously popular introductory astronomy course that Neil deGrasse Tyson, Michael A. Strauss, and J. Historia
Bill Bryson once again proves himself to be an incomparable companion as he guides us through the human body - how it functions, its remarkable ability to heal itself, and (unfortunately) the ways it can fail. Full of extraordinary facts (your body made a million red blood cells since you started reading this) and irresistible Bryson-esque anecdotes, The Body will lead you to a deeper understanding of the miracle that is life in general and you in particular. As Bill Bryson writes, "We pass our existence within this wobble of flesh and yet take it almost entirely for granted."

The story is seen through the eyes of Uhtred, a dispossessed nobleman, who is captured as a child by the Danes and then raised by them so that, by the time the Northmen begin their assault on Wessex, Alfred's kingdom and the last territory in English hands, Uhtred almost thinks of himself as a Dane.

Violence is the theme here!

This story is really primarily about chopping up people with swords and axes in the name of one or another despicable ruler.

Historia
In December 1943, with the rising realization that the Allies are planning to invade Fortress Europe, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel is assigned the title of General Inspector for the Atlantic Wall. His mission is to assess their readiness. His superior, theater commander, crusty old Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt, who had led the Reich to victory in the early years of the war, is now fed up with the whole Nazi regime. He lives comfortably in a plush villa in a quiet Paris suburb, waiting for the inevitable Allied invasion that will bring about their final defeat.

The Great War and Modern Memory was universally acclaimed on publication in 1970. Today, Fussell's landmark study remains as original and gripping as ever: a literate, literary, and unapologetic account of the Great War, the war that changed a generation, ushered in the modern era, and revolutionized how we see the world.

Pointless
Revisado: 08-10-23
This book is a pointless selection of WWi writings which rambles about never getting anywhere. It is but the authors opinion of a selection of random writings which express musings and opinions of the war composed by literary nobodys. I kept wondering why this or that bit was chosen and of what value or interest I was presumed to have.

Historia
In this span between armistice and depression, Americans were kicking up their heels, but they were also bringing about major changes in the social and political structure of their country. Only Yesterday is a fond, witty, penetrating biography of this restless decade, a delightful reminiscence for those who can remember and a fascinating firsthand look for those who've only heard.

Revisado: 12-14-21
Very well done and the narrator is A+.
This book clearly relates the path that slowly led to the great depression. I fear that the last 100 years have erased our memories to the point that we are again going down this same perilous path.going

Graham Hancock, the internationally best-selling author has been overwhelmingly vindicated by recent discoveries. Entertaining but more incredible than credible!
Revisado: 06-22-19
The author provides food for thought. However, my impression after listening for many hours is thus. This author makes a living by sensationalizing possible historic events. Initially his proposition is an intriguing hypothesis. The America's were inhabited by humans as far back as 110,000 years ago. However, to make his point he argues only in support of his hypothesis. In doing so he cherry picks his facts and amplifies possibilities into probabilities and probabilities into must have happened that way.
In the end I would say that his book was interesting but, having now heard him out, I do not place much faith in his theory that man or some hominid like creatures inhabited the Americas 110.000 years ago. Yeah, its possible because that would have been a hiatus in an earlier period of glaciation but there is simply no evidence to indicate that hominids had even left Africa at that time.
And as far as his claims and continual banging on the idea that the ancients possessed some high form of geometry 15,000 years back is ludicrous. Any fool could quickly figure out how to use two objects one fixed and one movable to determine the absolute annual extremes of the sun, moon or celestial movement. And even hunters would understand that they derived a benefit from knowing the approaching seasons which would allow them to anticipate animal and fish migrations. Given that man's brain size has been pretty much what it is now for 150,000 years, there is no reason to believe that we lacked the ability to reason even when we were stone age hunters. It is after all man's high ability to solve problems that sets us apart from the other animals. There is no reason to marvel at the likelihood that mankind might decide to provide some permanent method to determine the summer and winter solstices. Certainly learning how to use fire was a far more impressive feat of technology than would be marking the rising and setting of the sun.
