Historia
The Carryx—part empire, part hive—has waged wars of conquest for centuries, destroying or enslaving species across the galaxy in its conflict with an ancient and deathless enemy. When they descend on the isolated world of Anjiin, the human population is abased, slaughtered, and put in chains. The best and brightest are abducted, taken to the Carryx world-palace to join prisoners from a thousand other species. Dafyd Alkhor, assistant to a prestigious scientist, is captured along with his team.

A fitting end... Wish it didn't have to!
Revisado: 05-23-22
It's been a light years long journey for those of us who followed characters we got to know better than we know people in our own lives in some cases, and quite a journey for the characters themselves. Some evolved after learning lessons and others never changed. One of my favorite things about The Expanse is how it holds a mirror for us to stare back at ourselves, so we can see the beauty as well as the blemishes of humanity. This compilation of novellas lets you choose a particular character to explore in depth, and you didn't always get that view of some of them in the novels. The novellas can be raw, but always slot into the story in very rewarding ways. Even though I have all of them besides the last one, it's great to have them all together with notes from the authors. What a wild ride this has been!

A journey you never want to see come to an end...
Revisado: 12-06-21
A great final chapter to what is hands down the best work of science fiction I've read. Jefferson Mays has done it great justice, as usual. This book, and the series, lays bare humanity's flaws. But like the other novels in the series, and maybe this one especially, might just give me hope for the future...

Historia
In the years leading up to the election of Donald Trump, Congressman Adam Schiff had already been sounding the alarm over the resurgence of autocracy around the world, and the threat this posed to the United States. But as he led the probe into Donald Trump’s abuses of presidential power, Schiff came to the terrible conclusion that the principal threat to American democracy now came from within. In Midnight in Washington, Schiff argues that the Trump presidency has so weakened our institutions and compromised the Republican Party that the peril will last for years.

Hear the story from as many angles as necessary...
Revisado: 11-27-21
But the story remains the same. I found the audio book hard to get through at times, not because it was a bad story, but because the more I hear it from different people who are involved, the more dire the situation seems. We all need to hear it and understand it though, if for no other reason than that someone will have to remember what we were as a country. And to remember how we failed to preserve it under its current form of government.

Historia
From the massively popular podcaster and New York Times best-selling author comes the story of the Marquis de Lafayette's lifelong quest to protect the principles of democracy, told through the lens of the three revolutions he participated in: the American Revolution, the French Revolution, and the Revolution of 1830.

His like may never pass this way again...
Revisado: 11-17-21
We sorely lack politicians with the ideological fortitude and genuine willingness to fight for the liberty of others. Yet the Marquee thought nothing of it and did it in a land far from his home for a group of admitted underdogs, in the face of the greatest military machine the world had seen up to that point in history. Lafayette is now one of my favorite among the figures of our revolution, and I hope others might hear his story and realize how fleeting democracy can be.
Thanks Mr. Duncan, for another prescient book in these troubled times.

Same Joe, new podcast, and worthy of a listen.
Revisado: 11-02-21
it's refreshing to listen to a political podcast without having to listen to someone bang on about one side or the other in an openly hostile fashion. We definitely need less hostility and more listening (and hearing) in our political dialogue. Joe has been putting on these style podcasts since he realized that our democracy is in trouble and this new show is just what we need. I don't agree with everything he says but if he's willing to let everyone have their say, I am too. Compromise is a dirty word these days, but it's the only option in a democracy.

Historia
Throughout history, humans have been driven by the quest for two cherished ideals: community and freedom. The two don’t coexist easily. We value individuality and self-reliance, yet are utterly dependent on community for our most basic needs. In this intricately crafted and thought-provoking book, Sebastian Junger examines the tension that lies at the heart of what it means to be human.

Who knew freedom was more than life without a mask
Revisado: 10-02-21
Straight to the point. Freedom isn't just about "I'll do what I want". This book gives you many examples of freedom and shows you how much it is misunderstood in today's narrative of the topic, and how the idea of freedom is twisted in the interest of undermining democracy.

A True Patriot
Revisado: 08-14-21
For any of you who don't know or understand who this man is, he is a selfless American hero, and he has taken the time to write about his struggles with selfish and greedy men he worked with and tried to give the benefit of the doubt to. That way, you will know him and, indeed, truly understand what it means to sacrifice everything you worked toward for the length of your adult life so Americans could know the corruption and malfeasance that was at the heart of the government. Many people who appreciate his sacrifice will listen to his audio book. Will any of you who don't appreciate it give it a listen? Perhaps you should.

Hear it all again, for the first time...
Revisado: 07-25-21
While most people who've been paying attention have heard some of these stories before, it is interesting to find out who they're actually attributed to. Most of the people are rightly portrayed as sad figures, trapped in trump's orbit not by wanting to be loyal to the man, but
by an unwillingness or inability to do the right thing. And given certain situations, all others could really do is leave. So, you're invited to read about this hellish culmination of a zero sum style of politics and it's inner workings (or inner ineptitude) that we the people have birthed and unleashed upon ourselves.
The author writes in a respectful manner of the main characters which most deserve, so if you're looking for a book that tries to paint them all in a bad light, you might try something else. He does place blame where it's earned most of the time but I think we've barely scratched the surface in terms of the terrible things we may learn in the coming months and years, assuming we can hold onto our free press and preserve the Republic.
This book is a good first effort from an actual journalist who has actual contacts in Washington and isn't afraid to use them.
