Light on plot, but still enjoyable

As others have said, Record of a Spaceborn Few is light on plot, perhaps that could even be said of the first two novels in the series, but as with Long Way... and A Closed and Common Orbit, this is still an enjoyable read. With this installment in the series, you get what you expect - a novel that focusing mainly on character development. I'm not sure I've come across another author that really makes me care about the characters in 10 hours the way that Becky Chambers does. Also, as with books 1 & 2, Rachel Dulude knocks it out of the park.

In my opinion, this book doesn't do much to move the Wayfarer universe along, but it does aid in world building, while giving you the history and life of Exodans and the Exodan fleet. If you enjoyed the first two books in the series, I'm sure you'll enjoy this one. If you didn't, well then why do you want to read book 3?

As a big fan of books on NASA and specifically the Apollo program, I really enjoyed this book. Not only does it give a overview of Gene Cernan's flights, but also the Mercury and Gemini flights. Not only is it a good book, but having Gene Cernan narrating his own story puts this over the top. He does an excellent job! And it's really nice to hear if from the man himself. It feels authentic and from the heart. If you're a fan of books on this subject, I highly recommend it! I only wish it was longer (note: it's abridged, but as far as I can tell, there isn't an unabridged audio version out there).

I have to say, I really enjoyed Pilot X, the initial book in the series. I was excited to see that the author came out with book 2, and after reading it, I can't wait till Book 3. Tom Merritt, if you read this, please continue the story! I enjoyed this book even more than the first. It was more straightforward, and a little less confusing in terms of time travel paradoxes, but an excellent read overall. If you enjoyed Pilot X, pick up this book.

<<SPOILER ALERT>> The only criticism I have with this book, is that there is a fair amount of time (in my opinion) spent on a few characters for seemingly no apparent reason. Perhaps it is a setup for a 3rd book, but it wasn't clear to me. I wouldn't let this affect your decision to read it though. I still loved the book. Can't wait for more Pilot X and Verity.

I think so! I really enjoyed The Long Way to A Small Angry Planet, so I was really excited to listen to this, I was slightly disappointed that the main characters don't return for this book, but I'll be honest, I enjoyed this book even more than the first. If you liked The Long Way to A Small Angry Planet, you should read this. Now for book 3 (and an upcoming book 4 in 2021).

Most Direct Sequel in the series

Another fantastic entry in the Threshold series, and really, the first direct sequel to "14" and "The Fold". With some minor exceptions, we're treated to a new cast of characters, but I enjoyed just as much as the early books. It gets straight to the action, and was very hard to put down. I finished it in only a few days, and already can't wait for the next adventure. My only complaint, if you can call it that, was that I was a little fuzzy on the details of "14" and "The Fold" as it's been a few years since I listen to them both.

If you're a fan of 14 and The Fold, LISTEN TO THIS BOOK! And, as always, Ray Porter is fantastic.

Almost essential...while I believe the novellas are completely optional when reading The Expanse series, I feel as though The Churn is the one that definitely should be read along with the novels. It provides fascinating background for Amos, that really adds to his story. The narration is so-so, but perhaps I'm just used to Jefferson Mays narrating the novels.

Having reached this book in the series, I can say this is right up there with Leviathan Wakes as one of my favorites so far. Really enjoyed the setting and suspense, and am looking forward to see how they adapt it for TV.
