Intriguing premise, captivating story, compelling characters—-but too many dead people
Revisado: 09-11-23
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and believe it is worth a read. But I couldn’t help thinking that the author put way too many dead people in the story.
The female lead’s brother and his wife die tragically before the story begins, leaving their 10 year old son in her custody. Great start and great premise that really sold me on the book.
But not too long into it you also learn that her ex-boyfriend is dead from 20 years ago; oh, also the male main character’s wife is dead, too. And his childhood best friend? Also dead.
Oh, and the one of female lead’s boyfriend left her at the alter while another one cheated on her…
It seemed like the author fell in love with all of her backstory ideas and refused to narrow it down.
It was all too much!
That said, I still enjoyed the book and performance well enough to ignore those defects and really fell in love with Nate and Gracelyn, Morgan and Gabe!

Historia
Ten Restaurants That Changed America reveals how the history of our restaurants reflects nothing less than the history of America itself. Whether charting the rise of our love affair with Chinese food through San Francisco's the Mandarin, evoking the richness of Italian food through Mamma Leone's, or chronicling French haute cuisine through Henri Soulé's Le Pavillon, Paul Freedman uses each restaurant to tell a story of race and class, immigration and assimilation.

A “must listen” for any food history nerd!
Revisado: 11-10-21
Thought this was going to be a “time waster”; now is one of my favorite’s of the year!
Wow talk about a hidden gem!
While ostensibly about “10 Restaurants that Changed America” this book is a thrilling ride through American and world culinary history that kept me engaged from “minute 1” until the very end!
Each of the 10 restaurants is given a thorough treatment by Freedman and he leaves you enthralled by each…in addition to the cast of characters who founded, ran, and patronized them.
Freedman’s writing combined with Keith Szarbajka’s pleasantly deep and gravely voice made this a listening and discovery experience that I’ll no doubt re-consume in the future.

Historia
The leisure class has been replaced by a new elite. Highly educated and defined by cultural capital rather than income bracket, these individuals earnestly buy organic, carry NPR tote bags, and breast-feed their babies. They care about discreet, inconspicuous consumption. In The Sum of Small Things, Elizabeth Currid-Halkett dubs this segment of society "the aspirational class" and discusses how, through deft decisions about education, health, parenting, and retirement, the aspirational class deepens the ever-wider class divide.

Great for marketers
Revisado: 02-23-21
Though I doubt it was the author’s intention, this book has given direct response marketers like me great insights into the desires, fears, fantasies, beliefs, and problems of the upwardly mobile “aspirational class.”...so as better to sell to them!
