It’s all about the journey
Revisado: 01-29-23
As a fan of WWII historical fiction with strong female characters, this is one of the best. It takes you from pre-war to post war in raw, realistic action. Yes, we won the war but this brings nail biting action, that makes the 77 yr from then to now real.
You do have to pay attention to the chapters as the book weaves past and present together.

Historia
Meredith and Nina Whitson are as different as sisters can be. One stayed at home to raise her children and manage the family apple orchard; the other followed a dream and traveled the world to become a famous photojournalist. But when their beloved father falls ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now, offers no comfort to her daughters.

History comes to life
Revisado: 02-23-22
Vibrant characters bring little known Russian WWII history to life. I laughed, cried and empathized throughout the book. You could shiver in the cold, cry at the loss and hope that the world will be a better place for all. Kristin Hannah gives the term fairy tale a new meaning.

The bones of a good book are there poor execution
Revisado: 11-29-19
This has the skeleton of a multi book series. This lacks depth of character development but is very superficial. I also feel the title is misleading as the “front line” is mere crumb of the book. This book is vague in plot development as well. This reads like a summary of a book rather than a book itself. As a former military nurse I enjoy the action and character driven historical fiction surrounding war and nurses. This book fell way short of using history as a plot device to explore feelings.

Historia
On October 3, 1985, Leon Klinghoffer, a disabled Jewish New Yorker, and his wife boarded the Achille Lauro to celebrate their 36th wedding anniversary with a Mediterranean cruise. Four days later, four Palestinian fedayeen hijacked the Italian luxury liner and took the passengers and crew hostage. Leon Klinghoffer was shot in the head, his body and wheelchair thrown overboard. His murder became a flashpoint in the intractable struggle between Israelis and Arabs and gave Americans a horrifying preview of what it means when terrorism hits home.

A gripping thriller told objectively from all points of view
Revisado: 10-19-19
This had perfect sequencing of events in real time from all perspectives, yet with many unanswered questions. It brought out all layers of human condition. There are few hero’s and many victims on both sides, leaving very little room for peace and coexistence.

Historia
At the height of World War II, the British Air Transport Auxiliary need help. A group of young women volunteer for action, but the perils of their new job don’t end on the tarmac. Things are tough in the air, but on the ground their abilities as pilots are constantly questioned. There is friction from the start between the new recruits. Spirited American Lizzie turns heads with her audacity, but few can deny her flying skills. She couldn’t be more different from shy, petite Ruby, who is far from diminutive in the sky. It falls to pragmatic pilot May to bring the women together.

Historia
When the war finally ended in May 1945, Lieutenant Danny McClain made good on his promise to come back for Anya in Holland. He expected her to put up a fight but instead found her exhausted and utterly broken. Maybe it was unfair, asking her to marry him when she was so vulnerable. But this much he knew: He would spend a lifetime helping to make her whole again. The war had taken everything from Anya - her family, her friends, her home, her faith. She clung to the walls she'd fortressed around her heart, but what future did she have apart from Danny?

I loved this book even more than the first. It made my mother’s life come alive. She didn’t talk much about her wait to come to America as a War Bride, or the journey over. This put me in her shoes.

I am an avid reader of Daniel Silva and love the Gabriel Allon character. There was no edge of your seat thrill I’ve come to expect from author and this character. This feels like a prequel.
