Not nearly as good as the Cherringham series

I'll just wait for the next entry in the Cherringham series. Nathaniel Parker does a great job, but the story just isn't as good as the Cherringham series.

Couldn't stand the new narrator

For me, the narrator just wasn't Inspector Gamache. I had trouble distinguishing which character he was voicing - they all pretty much sounded alike. I hope the author can find someone closer to Ralph Cosham's voice or who can at least make the characters sound less alike. I'm going back and listening to the earlier books again with Ralph Cosham as the narrator. This narrator was a big disappointment.

Really enjoying this series

I was looking for a new series and I'm really enjoying this one. The narrator is terrific! I tend to listen to series based in England, so I don't know much about French law or customs, This has been a real learning experience for me. I end up listening way into the night and while I'm knitting. I have downloaded all the available books in this series and am half-way through them. Well worth the time.

Just couldn't get into the story

When characters fail to interest me from the beginning, I know it's not going to get any better. I just couldn't get interested in the characters or the story.

My least favorite style of writing

There may be a good story here, but I don't like this style of writing. I don't like being constantly told what the characters are thinking at all times. I like books best where what the characters say, do, and how they interact with their environment and other characters tells the story and not to be told at great length what they are feeling or thinking. The constant asides also are annoying. Stay on plot. It's too distracting when I'm so annoyed with the writing that I can't get into the story or the characters.

Enjoying it again after last reading ten years ago

This book has always been a favorite. I remember listening to it on CDs on a ten hour drive when it first came out. I had to finish listening to it on the return trip.

I just love all the quirky characters, plot twists, the whole historical world and magic worlds in which it's set. And of course, Simon Prebble is one of my all time favorite readers.

Irritating Narration

The narrator's delivery was extremely irritating and awkward - long , drawn out., and exaggerated. It was a very uncomfortable listen for the first five minutes that I listened to - forget 12+hours.

Definitely does not match my life experience

The whole U-shape curve to happiness from mid-life to old age does not match my experience. I'd go back to mid-life and my job in a flash.

Makes me glad I'm retired

I got tired just listening to the intro. Not the book for me. The narrator is extremely annoying. So glad I'm retired and beyond this kind of motivation. Returning.
