Worth listening to for free
Revisado: 06-08-24
If you’ve been in military combat arms or work in software engineering, you’re going to constantly struggle with suspension of disbelief. There are a lot of things that are just wrong. The Mary Sue , or Gary Stu, if you prefer, hero was about as believable as Spider-Man.

Historia
Earth is governed by Corporations. Automation has made unemployment normal. The work ethic has been replaced by interactive virtual reality. Yet within ten years the population will exceed the ability of the infrastructure to feed everyone, and it will all come tumbling down... unless a productive solution can be achieved. In Volume 1 (Modulus) Paul Harden attempted a solution and failed badly. In the process, he destroyed an entire planet, killing almost all of its settlers. Now Harden is on the run, an escapee. He has a hole card he believes in, a way back to what he believes is his ...

Entertaining story
Revisado: 05-30-24
Virtual voice is terrible, but it got the job done.
This series is worth a listen. The story is interesting and entertaining, and not too far-fetched. A lot better than most sci-fi that I’ve read or listened to.
My only real critique is that the author is in serious need of a good editor to help clean up and fine tune the pacing and verbiage.

Historia
Years after clean energy ended the world’s reliance on fossil fuels, a lull of peace encompasses all of humanity. Some think we should travel to the distant corners of the galaxy; others oppose the idea, thinking that the harnessed singularity reactors are unnatural. When a terrorist group attacks the Lunar colony, members of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force are divided as a result of the incursion. Years later, Lieutenant Commander Kyle Torres comes face to face with old friends, as he’s thrown into an assignment that could change everything.

Good performance, cliche story
Revisado: 01-27-24
I couldn’t finish it. I wanted to, but it’s just not believable to anyone who’s spent any time in combat arms, and the characters are just irritating, and not likable.

Historia
We hide in shadows. Our planet is lost. We are the last humans, and we must go home. Two thousand years ago, aliens destroyed Earth. Our fleets shattered. Billions died. The last humans fled a burning planet, heading to the stars. Today we are still refugees. Hungry. Afraid. Our enemies hunt us everywhere. So we hide. On distant asteroids. In rundown space stations. In deep caves on frozen worlds. And we dream. Of green hills. Blue skies. Golden fields. We dream of Earth. And for the first time, we have hope.

Poor prose and deus ex machina abound
Revisado: 01-23-24
It’s just Zionism and Nazis in space with a decent plot, terrible, unrealistic prose, Kabbalah, Mary Sues, and a bunch of just in time miracles.
Sci-Fi is usually pretty low quality, so I try to not be too critical, but this book is just terrible.
I’m impressed with the performers ability to make the speeches sound less corny.

Historia
In the world of Warbreaker, each person is born endowed with the power of one Breath―which can be sold and collected by others, then used to Awaken objects and even corpses to do their bidding. A few individuals who die in glory return as gods, with the power of thousands of Breath, but no memory of their mortal lives―and are enthroned in the Court of Gods in Hallandren’s capital. To Vivenna and Siri, princesses of Idris, the abuse of Breath and the claim of the Returned to be gods are repugnant blasphemy.

A cut above most fantasy
Revisado: 01-03-24
Even though there were plenty of “stock” character types, they were different enough to not make it cliche. The way “magic” works in this universe was different, interesting, but except in one exceptional case, not godlike or overpowering. The single case of god-mode powers had a reasonable explanation, is properly foreshadowed, and wasn’t the typical deus ex machina that fantasy authors often use to get out of situations.
The pacing may be too slow for some, but I found it to be almost perfectly done.

Historia
All Thorn wanted was to be a Battle Mage. He had the talent, and his whole future was before him. On the day of Choosing, he finds things don't always go as planned. Suddenly Thorn's life is thrown into fast forward, and he finds himself in a world not of his own choosing. In a world of spaceships and blasters, instead of horses and swords, Thorn needs to adapt and survive, make new allies, and rediscover that although nothing is familiar, he's still a Mage, and pirates and slavers beware.

It’s just.. dumb
Revisado: 12-30-23
I’m used to bad sci-fi, and can tolerate quite a lot of bad plots, cookie cutter characters, deus ex machina, and so on, but this story, which had promise just gets worse and worse as time goes on.
I feel like I’m reading the fantasies of an over-weight, middle-class urbanite whose mind is still trapped in secondary school.

Historia
CASPers - Combat Assault Systems, Personal - are the lords of the future battlefield. The massive mechs were created to give humanity an edge against the rest of the mercenary forces in the Galactic Union. Just like today's tanks, though, massive amounts of armor and weaponry just make the CASPers "hard to kill", not "invulnerable". There are things in the galaxy even stronger than the CASPer, and when humans run up against them, it's up to the human inside to figure out a way to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Thin and plodding
Revisado: 12-28-23
There was one character that wasn’t utterly forgettable, and he was barely more than a one dimensional counterpart to a stereotypical arrogant asshole.
The military TOE and tactics used by these “seasoned veterans” would be recognized as terrible by anyone who has been in an Infantry unit more than a month, and are just pants on head stupid. Maybe if your only experience with military matters is an FPS, this might be entertaining, but if you’ve spent any time in a combat arms unit, your eyes will roll so far back in your head that your optic nerve will snap. Hell, anyone who’s played a military strategy or tactical game will know this.
The worst of the already rather weak Four Horseman universe.

Historia
Depik. The race of catlike assassins is feared galaxy-wide. Few living people have seen them, as the sight of one is usually the last thing its victim sees. When Reow is implicated in killing the Depik governor, though, her clan is declared anathema. Her four offspring are placed under interdict - they are to be killed on sight - and Del, Flame, Blade, and Death must flee with their molly, Susa. With Reow dead and Hunters tracking them across the galaxy, will they live long enough to find the real killer, or will they find themselves assassinated by their own kind?

Best of the series so far
Revisado: 12-26-23
Reasonable plot, decent characters for the number of them and the available time, no thinly veiled social commentary or preaching, and an interesting look at the hunters.
It’s not a literary masterpiece, but it was a good read.

It just keeps getting worse
Revisado: 12-19-23
I don’t expect a lot from science fiction, but this story just keeps getting cornier and cornier. The only thing more eye rolling than neo-liberal preaching in a story is conservative preaching in a story, and the politics just ooze out of the story like a slime mold. I’m trying to get through it, but the author is trying like hell to convince me to listen to something else.

Historia
Major Rodger Y. Murphy should have died when his helicopter crashed off the coast of Mogadishu in November, 1993. Instead, he woke up in August, 2125, in a binary star system 152 light years from home. Without any memory of the otherworldly abductors who spirited them away in cold sleep, Murphy and 100 other “Lost Soldiers” have been retrieved and awakened by officers of the Consolidated Terran Republic. Promising to return to the 55 Tauri B system after completing a distant mission, they leave the twentieth century castaways with a daunting objective.
